Hello World

Posted by: Mandy Thomas on 07/01/2012 - 11:26 AM

I have been on this site for some time now and enjoy looking at the varied art on here.

I am learning how to market myself as an artist , but my comfort zone is in my studio painting.
If you have a moment to spare please have a look at my portfolio , comments are an inspiration .
thankyou

Drawn to this one. Engaging glance.

Truth be known, most of us are in the same boat as you. We come to the forum to exchange notes. You're welcome to add your ideas.

To promote your art, if you wish to try approaching a gallery to sell your work there are some good vids at the bottom of this topic

I'm going to say something that probably few others will say. You want us to look at your portfolio...and you say you've been on this site 'for some time now'...but you are not Watching anyone, and you have no Favorites. I think for people to be willing to spend time inspiring you with their comments, you first need to be more involved and open and participate with the community here.

If you were a brand new young artist looking for direction, it would be a different story (for me anyway). You've won awards and have been a working artist for a long time. Asking others to view your portfolio at this juncture just sounds like self-promotion to me.

(sorry if this rubs anyone in our community the wrong way!)

I'm curious. Looked at your pastels. You mentioned using white gels. I'm curious what that is. Pencil, pen, or brush application?

Your work is wonderful. Technical skills are excellent. I noticed there is a safe filter on your dog alsation painting - a mistake? Great portfolio!

Well, speaking for myself, I like a short login event notification. I find it annoying to see every new comment on every piece I've made a favorite, and every new comment for any artist I'm watching. Perhaps she's like me in that regard. I would have MANY more favorites if it didn't behave like this. Favorites, in my opinion, should just be bookmarks we can use to find the really good things we've seen, and new uploads by our favorite artists. (Not every comment made on their work.) I'd use them all the time if they didn't have new comment notifications. I can definitely say I don't use Favorite and Watch because they are too "noisy", not because I wouldn't like to mark my favorites a lot more.

I might be mistaken about "artist watch" function. It seemed "noisy" in some way that drove me away from using it very much when I first tried it.

Mandy, your work is wonderful. If you want comments, you need to put people on your watch list, and they in turn will watch you and make comments. But it won't make your life any easier (lol)! I agree with Gregory. Your activity stream will become flooded with every comment on any piece you have favorited or commented on before. Sadly, I've found myself commenting less and less these days because of this reason. My activity stream becomes way too "noisy" (in Gregory's words). Once I comment on a piece, I don't need to have it pop up every time anyone else comments on it.
