The Art Of Social-network Marketing Available Online For Free

I have been having great success with the sales of my book, "The Art of Social-Network Marketing." However, I owe its success to the amazingly supportive online community to which I belong. Therefore, in order to say "Thank you for your support," I have decided to release one section of my book in an online text format on its website every week until the entire text is available for FREE! The online version won't have the fancy graphics, illustrations, and charts but the entire text and all its information will be there to aid all who are interested in marketing their artwork, crafts, sculpture, and assorted products. The Print, PDF, Nook, iBook, and Kindle versions will still be available for those who want to have all the bells and whistles but the meat and potatoes will be online for all to view for FREE. I sincerely hope the information aids those who are looking to find their way in this confusing Internet-based marketing arena! Check the site often, and by the way, "Thank you for your support!"

Thank you Ken!!!!! Free is all I can afford so I will see what I can glean from your generosity! Thanks again! :)

Thank you very much Vivian and Andee!

I sincerely hope the information helps. It will take me a while to get all the sections online due to my time restrictions (I have 2 children under the age of 6) but I plan to have the third section of the book online later this week. I will then try to make a weekly update until the entire text is available online for free. There are no catches or gimmicks, just a genuine hope that others can benefit from the information. Have a great day everyone!

Thanks Marlene and Allen for the support! I am planning to get the third section up on the website later this evening. I think Wednesdays will work the best for me when it comes to posting the book sections. Hopefully each section will provide something to help some aspect of each artist's online promotion! The original text, in print form, is 147 pages long. The HTML web version will be more condensed since each section will have its own webpage and there won't be the charts, graphs, and illustrations to take up space. Enjoy!

The SEVENTH section of the FREE online version of my book "The Art of Social-Network Marketing" is now online and concludes the introductory chapters discussing the overall web-based marketing strategy, how to create a central location for sales, and how to optimize that location for higher search rankings. The next chapter deals with why someone should use social-media to promote products along with a few posting tips, etc... After that, the book begins to delve into each of the most popular Social Networks and how to use each specific one in an effective manner. Enjoy! I will post more as time allows.

I spent a bunch of time today adding sections EIGHT, NINE, & TEN of my "The Art of Social-Network Marketing" book to the FREE online version. This particular full chapter deals a bit with why one should use social-networks for marketing, some tips for interaction, and some suggestions for time management. The next full chapter discusses the idiosyncrasies of Twitter and how to effectively use it to market products. Enjoy!

Good luck Andee! I had to try Twitter a couple times before I discovered the magic recipe for me. My Sister-in-Law (who still hasn't read the copy of the book I gave her by the way) hasn't had any success with Twitter at all. In her words, "I just can't figure it out." She needs to get to reading!

Very nice of you Sandra! I would have put more on today but I had some severe issues with an online calculator I wrote for my home beer brewing site and I had to get it fixed. I will fit more sections in as soon as I find some more time.

You are welcome Sharon! Hopefully you will find the information useful. I will try to get more of the sections up this week.

I just finished posting the next 3 sections of the book which deal with the chapter on Twitter. Even if you don't use Twitter, you might be interested in some sections within the Twitter chapter that are yet to come which outline some posting guidelines that can apply to all social-networking services. When I get the entire book posted, I hope to provide an additional link section that can lead to further research if you are interested.

Ken - thank you so much. I just purchased the kindle version for my iPad and will give a review as soon as I have read it - I can already see it's going to be good!! I'm still moving house at the moment, so it may take a while, but I will get to it :))

Ken Powers

Thanks Zeana! The iBook and Kindle versions all have the fun graphics and illustrations which are nice to have. Let me know what you think of the book. Some of the Facebook stuff might be a little out of date since all the changes they made. After all, it has been a year since I published the book! LOL

I got to thinking this morning and one nice aspect of the FREE online version is that it can be easily translated into other languages. Pretty nice feature since the Print, PDF, Kindle, Nook, and iBook are all in English only. I may look for a plug-in to have on the Free version's pages to automate translation. Of course, Google Chrome's browser already supports that. I am also toying with either writing a second edition of the book for print purposes or to add new information to the online Free version as it becomes available. I may be jumping ahead of myself, however, as I still need to get the entire free text online!

I found a spare minute to add one more section to the FREE online version of my "The Art of Social-Network Marketing" book. This section talks very briefly about hash-tags and their usage in Twitter. It is amazing how the hash-tag has now been adopted by nearly every other social-networking service.

I've added two more sections to the FREE online version of my "The Art of Social-Network Marketing" book! These talk about Twitter's #FollowFriday trend and the little spoken about Following limits that Twitter initially imposes. I only have one more section to add to the Twitter chapter and then it will be on to the Facebook chapter of the book. Even if you don't use Twitter, I encourage you to make sure you read every section of this book since every chapter has something in it that is useful or ties into other parts of the online marketing strategy somehow. In fact, the upcoming section about composing useful Tweets focuses on information useful for composing posts for all social-network services. Interesting, eh?

@ Ken - perhaps a little follow-up which helps us old folks through the new Facebook?? Hint, hint...

Ken Powers

I'm up for that. I will be starting to put up the Facebook chapter this week. Some of the information is a little outdated since so many changes have been made since I wrote it a year ago. The info is still good but there are a few changes to mention which would be perfect for a follow-up discussion.

Ken Powers

I just posted the final section of the Twitter chapter of the FREE online version of my book, "The Art of Social-Network Marketing." Although this section is directed toward Twitter users, the information is relevant for all social-networks so I would encourage you to read it even if you are only waiting for a specific chapter in the book. I wrote this text so that it flows in a very logical manner. It begins with a central presence and works its way outwards through social-media services. Along the way, tips are presented for every service that apply to the overall marketing scheme that I use. If you skip chapters, you will miss valuable information!

I should note that as I am transferring the print version of the book to the FREE online version, I am making some changes to reflect modifications that have occurred to social-media services over the year since I wrote the book. The Facebook chapter will definitely be revamped a bit. Although I should save this info for a second edition of the print version, I think it is more fun to present it online and to share it with my fellow art marketers. Enjoy!

Nicla Rossini

thank you Ken. I hadn't seen this. I think I am doing it correctly, except for politics - I think that an artist must engage into social life and "activism"...For this reason politics is somehow impossible to rule out completely. But I've very liberal with other views anyhow :) And yes Twitter is confusing! I must admit I hate it cordially lol

Ken Powers

Glad you are finding it interesting Nicla!

I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with me when it comes to voicing opinions about politics or religious views within a business marketing venue. I do, however, think that those topics are always the ones that result in very passionate arguments that can escalate and result in lost business. As with everything, there are ways to breach those topics without creating too much turmoil. It is up to the individual marketer as to how to approach such sensitive issues and to weigh the risks. Does one err on the side of caution? Or, does one throw caution to the wind when it comes to product marketing?

It would be interesting to hear more opinions about this topic since art and activism can be so closely intertwined. Both are passionate pursuits. Fun stuff to think about. I am glad you brought the issue up!

I have just posted the next two sections of the FREE online version of my book, "The Art of Social Network Marketing." Ken Powers

Andee,

I seriously considered writing a second edition in order to reflect the Facebook changes but the fact is that it is just changing too quickly to keep up with for a print version. I just have a short amount of time each day to dedicate to these projects and I just don't want to invest the effort into all the formatting, conversion to iBook, Nook, and Kindle formats or whatever else comes along. I made plenty of money from the sales of the book and it is more important to me at this point to give back to the art community by offering it for FREE with no gimmicks or trickery attached. For this reason, keeping the second edition as a free online book just makes more sense. I can keep it current with changes that are occurring within the social-networks and add tips as needed. In fact, I plan to eventually add a section about Microsoft's So.cl network as well as Pinterest. I am actually having a lot of fun with this project and I am learning HTML5 and CSS3 in the process.

Enjoy the free book! I hope to get more added this weekend.

I must add a thank you to the list of those who have done so already. I've bookmarked your page and will be devoting my spare minutes to learning all you are offering. I really appreciate that you are doing this and I'll have to come up with a way to pay it forward.

Ken Powers

@Andee, I think you will find that many artists and photographers have embraced Google+ wholeheartedly. Google is continually implementing the best features from all the other social networks. They are constantly updating the service but are definitely listening to what the users are saying. I think you would be impressed by G+ once you get to know it!

@Francesa, I am very pleased you are finding the information useful. I sold plenty of copies of the book after it was published to pay for my time and efforts. As the social-networks changed over the course of the year, I had the option to release a second-edition with updated information. Instead, I thought it would be more fun to create a free online version that I could easily change at will and keep updated over the course of time. I can also add information to chapters as each network evolves which is really pretty amazing. I like the format I am using better than a blog because of the ease of creating a navigable table of contents. I am afraid that the print version just can't keep up with the rate of change that occurs through the Internet these days. I hope to get more posted to the online version later this week if time allows.

Have a great evening and enjoy the book!

Hi Ken,
Thank you so much for the link...and the good reading. I am so very guilty of using facebook as a soapbox.... it's just so easy to pass along all the junk email, but you have shown me so much of what I'm doing wrong ...and probably have known, but just haven't been abiding by, so thank you for the reminder and the good info. appreciate it.

Adendorff Design

Hi Ken

Thats so great, thanks. Im finding Facebook a bit tricky as I feel there are gremlins..... but perhaps its me :-) "Invite friends" sometimes works, mostly doesnt etc. And if I click through to someone personal page from FAA there is no mention of their page address, so have to search for it most of the time. Not biggies and will all come out in the wash.

What I am keen to know is how you sold your book in the past? I am writing an e-book now and building a website for it but wonder if its best to use Amazon instead and publish with them? Would need to find a cover designer too of course. And, did you get an editor to help you polish it up?

Thanks again

Ken Powers

Glad to hear you are finding the information useful. It was a fun adventure writing it, editing it, formatting it, and finding ways to market it. The most fun part, however, has been giving it away for free! Enjoy it!

@Lee-Ann - As for marketing of the e-book, I originally created the back and front cover artwork, wrote, edited, and did the layout for the print version. My Dad who is a retired English professor did the editing. I chose to use Lulu.com to print the book. But, they also had the ability to submit an iBook format for the author. Now, they have added Kindle as well. They are a one-stop shop now. You can write the print version and use their tools (which they didn't have when I did this book) to convert to other formats and then Lulu will automatically submit them to the iBookstore, Kindle, and Nook stores. It is well worth it to use them! Of course, you can do it all by hand which is what I had to do.

Then I went through the arduous task of converting it to an iBook format. I learned an enormous amount of information about how these mobile book formats are presented. They are actually HTML documents! After I got the iBook version done, I tackled the Kindle and Nook. The PDF version went right along with print document so it was no big deal. Once the book was in all those formats, I created a simple two page website to be the central hub of promoting it. I used all the ideas that are in the book itself to market it so traffic was driven to the site whenever new coupon codes became available. The Kindle and iBook formats did the best simply by being able to be found by their search engines. The print version actually has ISBN numbers and can be purchased in book stores. There are several that currently stock it believe it or not. Even though the book is going online for free now, some people just prefer to have a print or e-reader version. I may put out a second addition but we will see if time allows that.

Hope that information helps!

Adendorff Design

Wow Ken, thanks so much for taking the time to write back and give me all that information. I realise I have a long way to go! I had an idea I would sell it as a PDF from my own website and then as a Kindle from Lulus or Amazon but didnt know about IBook etc. So much to learn!

Sincerest thanks , and for the free book which Im going to work through all day tomorrow

Ken Powers

No problem Lee-Ann! If you have any questions that require more details about it, go ahead and shoot me an e-mail through FAA or my art website at Powers Fine Art. iBook and Kindle versions of the book were very popular (and still are). I was surprised at all the work it took to go from PRINT/PDF version to iBook, Kindle, and Nook versions and I would probably approach a book like this differently in the future. I would start with the digital versions and consider conversion to print later. The print version was very successful but the iBook and Kindle versions were by far the most popular format. It shows the direction we are headed. It reminds me of a funny thing my Dad used to say about 15 years ago....."Print is dead!" He saw the writing on the wall at that point and he is a huge fan of printed books. In fact, he collects rare books and is a retired English professor who specialized in Shakespearean literature. When someone like that mentions the demise of printed literature, it is time to listen. The closing of a lot of locations for major chain bookstores is also a pretty good indicator of the future. I think I would consider keeping my next book project in digital only formats (even though I love printed books). The layout work would be so much simpler! I really like Lulu.com for self-publishing. They make it easy now to automatically submit to the iBookstore and Amazon. I have done a couple projects through them and have been happy. Of course, they do take a piece of the profits so that is something to consider as well.

I have had to mat, frame, and ship several original watercolor paintings, update a couple of my websites, and I also have completed another time-lapse video of my latest watercolor painting that can be seen on my YouTube channel at: Powers Fine Art YouTube Channel.

Tonight, however, I finally got around to uploading the sections on YouTube (how appropriate, eh?) and LinkedIn for you to enjoy reading. Don't forget to share the information with your friends. We all need the help!

Ken, I'm just now seeing your book link as I'm relatively new to FAA. Thank you so much for sharing what you've learned! I'm supposed to be doing something other than reading online right now, so will get back to it as soon as I'm able, but wanted to take a moment and applaud your efforts.

And congrats on your sales of the original watercolors!!!

If I may ask, concerning publishing: Did you consider smashwords.com in your quest along with lulu.com? I'm curious as to the differences between the two. Thank you for any insight you're able to offer!

Ken Powers

Thank you for the kind words Lindy! I am glad you will find a use for the information.

As far as publishing goes, I remember briefly looking at smashwords but there was something about Lulu.com that I liked better. It was a year ago so I can't say for sure what it was. I have used bookemon before and also Lulu.com for previous projects and I always liked Lulu.com the best. I tried to use Blurb but the downloadable software wouldn't run on the old computer I had at the time (I'm upgraded now though). I hear a lot of people rave about Blurb so I may try it for a future project.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Thanks for the bump Andee!

I forgot to post in this thread that the complete text of the book (plus some additional information and links section) is now online for free! The links section will continue to be updated as new blogs and how-to posts catch my eye and seem useful to share.

Enjoy! This has been an extremely huge project!

You continue to help and inspire us and so when I had (*another*) facebook glitch I though "Better ask Ken!"

So: My "likes" on my Fb page just got stuck. For days my new likes have not registered. No matter how many new people and pages come along to 'like' it just shows 86 likes. Do you know why this happens?

Thanks so much and wishing you every success

Ken Powers

Wow, that is very strange Lee-Ann. I have never heard of that happening to anyone before. I know that likes from Pages won't show in the total but it is very strange that likes from Profiles don't register. You might want to contact Facebook about it. I have found, however, that sometimes waiting it out usually results in a problem being fixed. They change things multiple times a day on FB and a person never knows what to expect next. They seem to make changes without having a plan or forethought. I wish I could help with that one but I have never heard of or experienced that particular issue myself.

If you find out what is going on, please let me know in case someone else is wondering.

Have a great day!

Ken, I appreciate your thoughts on publishing awhile back. I ended up doing some more research and finding that people thought smashwords had better customer service than lulu, so I've gone with them and have now published my own book (it does not have anything to do with the art world). I found smashwords easy to use and had my questions answered in short order, so I'm happy there. Just for future reference, in the event you consider them again!

Ken Powers

Thanks for the update Lindy! I may check out Smashwords for my next project. I did find Lulu.com a bit awkward to use but I have used it for 3 books so far. It is a different experience every time I use it! LOL

Did anyone have problems loading this link?

Ken Powers

If you have problems with the link, try bypassing the domain name and using http://socialnetworkmarketing.home.comcast.net/

I imagine if there is a problem, it is only temporary. It seems like your access to the site issue occurred at the same time I was experiencing trouble updating my GoDaddy site. Since GoDaddy is controlling the Social Marketing Book site's domain name forwarding, something weird might have been going on at their end. Hope that other link helps!

Have a great evening!

I've enjoyed reading this.. thanks Ken !

I must admit I've been struggling a bit to get my head round Twitter.. so it was good to have it explained in a clear concise way.
So would you say it is primarily your private art sales coming via these methods or is it POD's or just a mix ?

I've always seen my work as being of niche appeal but never really thought who these people are. You've certainly made me think who my work is aimed at.. I'd be interested in an independent view on who you think I should be aiming at and what words I should use to aim at them.

I've found in recent months visitors to my website are increasing while the opposite has been happening to my works on POD sites. I have had links and mentions on some high ranking sites and this seems to have had a legacy of generally bringing more visitors to my website. I feel like I've been pushing my snowball up the POD mountain only to find there isn't any easier downward slope on the other side.

Ken Powers

Thank you Andy!

I have definitely found that each social network shares some commonalities but each is also an individual and often times what works for one doesn't work for another. I actually tried Twitter on several different occasions before I found what actually works to gain a fan base and build a community of followers.

As for the type of sales this method is targeting, I would have to say it is a mix. When I have a new painting completed, I drive traffic to 2 specific areas, the POD page and my central website. I get a lot of original painting inquiries that originate through the POD site's "contact artist" link so both my original sales and POD sales benefit from the social marketing and increased visibility.

There is obviously a lot of competition for sales through any given POD site but I think driving our own traffic to our POD work is more than just beneficial, I think it is essential. The POD site's local search engine is taken out of the equation and you are increasing your own visibility. I view the POD site as just a print fulfillment center and integrate it into my website for exactly that purpose and it has really helped.

I just took a look at your website and if you are seeing increased traffic to it, it might be very beneficial for you to integrate the FAA custom shop into your Page.

Best of luck Andy, I hope the information in the book is helpful for you!

Andy Mercer

The issue I have with integrating the FAA Shop with my site is that many of my buyers are outside the US.. and I am concerned the shipping costs from the US will put buyers off.

At present I offer advice on which POD site to use depending on where in the world they are.. its not ideal but I can't think of anyway round it. I would love it if FAA offered a printing service in different parts of the world. I wouldn't hesitate to send buyers to FAA if this was the case. I think its a great shame that Sean hasn't developed the site in this way.

At present I offer general advice on which site to use depending on which part of the world the buyer comes from. It's not ideal but I can't see anyway round it.

Yes.. Very useful info Ken.. some things I already know about some I didn't. I will spend a few days studying it.

Good news! The site is now 100% ad free.....well except for the first page which gives links to where to purchase the print and e-book versions. However, the rest of the site is completely ad free for your enjoyment.

Thanks for spreading the word Andee!

Sunday April 7, 2013 I was forced to move the website to a new server due to Comcast's failure to support their free Personal Web Pages (they are going away and Comcast is not offering them to new customers). Funny thing is, as soon as the new server space was being created, the new host (GoDaddy) went down for 6 hours. My main art site was also on the fritz for the same amount of time. I apologize for the inconvenience but the book site is now up and running again and the free version of the book is at its usual URL:

Ken, many thanks for posting this. I was sort of doing most of the activities, but reading your guide has made me realise that I need to be more coordinated with it all. So a BIG thank you :-)

Ken Powers

Roy - A step by step guide would be great but I have found that Facebook changes so often that it would be tough to keep it accurate. Things changed drastically the month after I wrote the book and the previous year Facebook was continuing to mutate so decided to keep it vague.

Stuart - I am glad you found the information helpful. One of these days I am going to have to do a revised version.

Thanks Roger. I know that the free digital version doesn't appeal to some people. Others prefer the versions for ebook readers or PDFs. The print versions of books are still my favorites though. I am slowly beginning to accept that more and more people enjoy the e-readers and I am starting to give those a chance for my personal reading as well. It is a tough change to make!
