My camera is traveling until Wednesday or Thursday,so I can't.
Can I do something on PS?
Does it have to look like a sketch?

If you do something in PS then you can just take the avatar and change it. Not really the point of the exercise.

Even if you cannot draw you can have a go at this. It doesn't have to be perfect, just have a look of the avatar you are copying

I think it's a great idea. =) LOL...I doubt what I would do would be recognizable though.

If I edit avitar sized images, my results are always crappy. But I'm a photographer, using photographic editing techniques.
If I were to attempt this, I would work on a large image, and resize it to an avatar as my final step.

If you can make something out of this at avatar resolution, I am very impressed!

Firstly Gregory I can only see a paint brush as your avatar as I don't think you are actually logged into your artist account properly

Secondly I said NO LARGER IMAGES are allowed. Only the avatar size here or on the profile page

I can only draw the people who have pasted what I asked them to paste. It gives us the right to show your work both here and on the magazine. Otherwise we cannot do it really.

Gregory and Natalie are the only people to have done it properly :(

A note about these works for a couple of people who have asked why we cant have larger images to draw from

They are MEANT to be hard. That is the point of them. What can we as drawing people see, without having it thrust in our faces in a large sketch?.

They may not be perfect copies of a person but they are what we, the artist, makes of a small image. However you are allowed to stretch them to make a print out.

All artwork from the avatars is not for sale, I said that in the top post. The art is purely for fun.

Anyone who gave their avatar for use as a drawing did not give permission for the artist to sell the work, they only gave permission for the image to be copied and drawn, to be put here and on 1stAngel (hence onto social sites as 1stAngel is fed through them) to give some advertising for the avatar owner and artist. Selling is not what the thread is about. It is for practicing the art of drawing with a difficult subject (a small image that is only allowed to be on this site and no larger than the avatar size

So, if you like the drawing and would like the file, I will get a photo of it and send the file to you but I cannot sell it to you or to anyone else as that isnt the point :)

If you would like the original, send me your address and I will send it through the post.

I seem to be the only person doing sketches so will do another couple tomorrow :) I did get told on my site however that my sketches look nothing like the avatars LOL Sorry about that

You can put it in a password gallery and it will show here as a small image but they cant see the big one, or
You can put in your images but put it at number (whatever the last number is in your gallery eg#100)
Just make sure no sale amount is put on it then it wont show in search.

great idea, ... but most peoples avatars are small, no permissions here, sorry, i don't want anyone's pencils to break constantly

That is the point :) It is harder to gain a sketch from a tiny image. It really is great sketching practice and I really hope to get some more sketchers here

Did this late last night and took the pics this morning. I didn't have much time to spend on it so I rushed it too much and am not happy with how I did some things. I'll look for the thread again at a later date when I have more time to do a better job, hopefully.

As you can see, one of our favorite members. unbeknownst to me, did make his version of my avatar, so proudly,now, hanging on my wall.

Thank you. No, I didn't have a problem referencing the av size pic, really.... Kyong has a good clear picture in her av. Although small I could still see her features pretty well. No, my biggest problem was I was half asleep by the time I started it! lol! I should have waited but I have a busy schedule right now so I didn't know when I could get to it. When I said I was going to do one last night, then I went and did some other stuff I had to do and didn't get to it until late. It's a good exercise for sketchers, though. Good idea!

Ahh, you are very kind, Kyong. Thanks....my apologies, though, for not taking more time with it.
I don't do photo realism, it's more illustration. And as you can see, I don't use cheats, no tracing or any other kind.. ( as my quick sketch proves, haha! ) Thats why doing it too hurried and too tired.. well, .the most glaring problem is I don't have the mouth centered but also the eyes and nose are wrong. You are a lovely lady and my sketch didn't do you justice by far. If I spent more time I would start traditionally and do lay out lines to center and plan eye, nose and mouth spacing, etc...and not just wing it. Or just do something more impressionistic would have been easier and a better choice in this instance.

Well here is my rendition of an avatar of one of my co-member here on FAA.
First I asked permission from Abbie if I could do it on my medium ofwhich is papier mache. And she gave a go to it.
The problem with my medium, is that Im dealing with a wet main material, which is pulped paper.
And since its already rainy/typhoon season already here in the Philippines.I had to post my artpiece, even though its still very very wet.
If I wait for it to dry up, it might take a month, and this discussion topic would already be on page 100. LOL.
On my own little way I give to you my rendition of co-member avatar SHEENA PIKE...hope she likes it.
I was supposed to do 3 more avatar. An Abbie(Shore),but Abbie your avatar facial feature is too small for me to copy,a Mike Savad, but didnt join the discussion, it would have been great to play what hat he would wear,hahaha. And an Angelina(Vick), but decided to do Sheena Pike.

Abbie did a creditable job - that avatar was shot on a bright, too bright, sunshiny day and I was squinting. My beard ain't that color any more and I seldom wear glasses - except to read or work here on the computer.

What you had just written, proves my point I've tried to make, many times before....The only way to draw/paint with any semblance of reality is to draw/paint DIRECTLY from life...Photographs will never do.......There is far more in the actual world to glean from, than what one can obtain from a mere 2 dimensional reference image .

This is the whole point of the thread..... to show how hard it is to get a really cool image BUT

I have to say that the members who have done images from avatars have really shown how good they are. It takes skill to grab a creditable image from such a small photo and they have shown that skill so far

Roger - that isn't exactly true - I've seen marvelous drawings done from a photograph - there is one secret - you have to KNOW and understand bone structure and muscle structure and be able to "see" how it is.

I didn't state permission on mine when I posted it because I wasn't happy with it but now that I've relaxed a bit about it lol! ... if you would like to use it for your project I'll copy and paste the permit line now.

Roger's point really hits home to me in particular in the way of not knowing anything about the subject. It's harder for me when I don't have any sense of their personality then I can't try to get any of their essence in it.

If one is only using only one photograph to make a drawing with... all that will result is transference of the image from one 2 dimensional surface to another,,,,,In fact, the best way to copy that image is to turn the original upside down.....Since all one is doing is making a drawing of a photograph..and not a drawing of the person photographed.

All we can work from is the photos given...If someone is squinting from the sun.or has a perpetual squint (Clint Eastwood) how are we to know?

As to knowledge of bone structure...Again I insist that one has to encounter that structure in it's alive, 3 dimensional form to have any semblance of understanding the reality of the subject portrayed.

Lovely conversation but, may we get back to sketching those 2d images now?
