Before You Opt Into Licensing With Pixels....be Aware

Because I pursue copyright infringement I was advised to not participate in the Pixels licensing program. Since I had only licensed through it one time (I sent the person there myself) I decided it just was not needed in my current business model. I had made ZERO using it and it was hurting my copyright cases. My licensing fees are just too high for that option. Opting out was a no brainer.

I have always licensed a lot but there has been a slow down in the last 6 months. I was removed from the licensing site....you cannot find me on licensingpixels.com. If you search my name, I am not there. But if people Google search an image in anyway and if they are interested in licensing, they still see the listings for licensingpixels.com. If they click on that Google listing, here is what they see in the attached.

GIANT LETTERS: This image is not available for commercial licensing.

Wait!!! It is available!!! It is very available!! But Pixels is advertising to the world that it's not!

That's right....6 months after you opt out of licensing with Pixels, people are told the image is not available for commercial licensing. And then they don't contact you to license with you directly (which is what I want). So I am losing business because these listings are not being removed from Google.

So just be aware that once you opt into Licensing, you may never be able to get completely out.

Any ideas of how to get these off of Google?

Someone had to have typed those words into the code. Can the code be changed? It should say "This image is not available for licensing through Pixels.com."

Good catch, this would be something I would like to see addressed as well as I believe my images would work the same way as yours do. If Sean really wanted to be nice he could even change the verbiage to say something to the effect of "Please contract the artist directly"

yep through is the operative word.

I think true stock photobuyers would know this means that the image is not available here for licensing, and to look elsewhere. For example, the pictures I have here I also have on Flickr and I'm contacted regularly over there for licensing these images. If people really want something we search the internet for options. I think what LicensingPixels is doing is exactly what you want ... or don't want rather .... to make the licensing sale here. I would not worry about it.

I am not a stock photographer. And I am not talking about stock photographers licensing my work. I am talking about regular everyday people who want to license my work for their book covers, websites, promotional posters, etc. How would they know? That is some pretty strong verbiage.

I read it as it is NOT available at all. Move on.

i guess you have to wait for google bots to clean that out. unless something in the code is making it look like your still a part of that program.

i never liked the program because i would never know who got the work and for what. that kind of thing should be disclosed to us, it should not be private. otherwise the ones that sue will sue people that bought from here. and then the site looks bad.

If it is truly an "opt in " or "opt out" program...You should be able to FULLY opt out. That is just good business. If you can only kinda opt out and Pixels gets to tell the World your work isn't available for commercial licensing....Then you aren't really opting out at all. It's a lose/lose for the artist that choses to opt out. Period.

Right...I believe it's part of the CODE. If it is part of the code and will remain, then in my mind it's unfair to the artist.

My hope is that this can be fixed. My hope is that it is code that just needs to be rewritten. My hope is that people will be able to opt in or out with negative ramifications.

I think once you opt out there are links still floating around out there. I think its better than just directing it back to FAA. At least your name is there so if they really wanted it they could contact you personally. I am not sure if that is the case but just a thought.

Sharon Cummings

There is no reason to contact the artist personally. It says in large BOLD letters: This image is not available for commercial licensing.

If I saw that, I wouldn't contact the artist. I would move on. It's detrimental.

Well, I guess it goes back to marketing. Everyone always say don't expect FAA to market for you and don't expect the search to make sales. How is this different? You just never know who will stumble across that image with your name on it. Good Luck!

I think you are over thinking this one! What comes up when you search google for an image to be used for commercial license?

Tatiana Iliina

fwiw I was unable to duplicate the search result that Sharon got. I have opted in for licencing but have not put amounts in any of my listings for it so not really offering licencing through pixels at present, even though opted in. Maybe that's a workaround?

list it on the bugs sheet, there seems to be a lot of bugs as of late.

Just making people aware....If I had known that my work would end up online with this verbiage, I would have never opted in.

Is it a bug? I dont think so.

Whether you realize the potential for negative impact or not, everyone should be aware of what Pixels does with your work. What decisions you make based on that awareness is individual.

I noticed the same thing.

I did a licensing deal with a buyer and used pixels for simplicity. I opted in, set the price for the two negotiated images, they purchased the license and then I opted out.
Now it says "not available for licensing".

I was recently contacted via my Etsy store for another license and did that deal outside of Pixels.

In your case Sharon, where you want people to contact you if they get linked to Pixels, it would be extra nice if the verbiage said to contact the artist for license options.

Sharon has a good point. I have a few images set up for licensing, but these are the ones I'd previously been contacted about and had structured accordingly. The other images all have the "Not Available" sign right there, bold as brass. Somewhat off-putting. Better, I think, to say "Not Currently Available ... Please Contact The Artist If Interested" ... and have the contact button immediately following the notice. I have an invite to contact me re licensing right in my bio, but as we all know, visitors seldom read those.

Help would be appreciated.

Thank you Sharon so much for bringing it up. I recently signed a big contract with one company to license my art in different venues and wanted to opt-out of Pixels licensing today (actually); but by blessing from above I found your note.
I'll just go ahead and raise my prices on Licensing.Pixels and potential customers can call me to negotiate.

I am so glad you brought it up!

Thank you,
Irina

I guess you have one left in there!! I think Irina has a great point. Raise your prices.

Found the same as Sharon last September, but never knew what to do about it-so I tried going ahead and opting in, and at least it didn't just drive people away from my site-but too confused on how to price licensing- checked numerous sites that claimed they license, but no figures to at least get an idea about-Kind of been waiting for this for a long time and hope something good can come out of it..

If you go to Pixels and click on licensing, you get "Page Not Found."

Another glitch Loree?

Why not put yourself back in the licensing program but make the prices so high that no-one will license; then have a 'contact for licensing' link in the bio.

The whole licensing site looks bugged.

The shop page shows print prices - http://licensing.pixels.com/profiles/travel-pics/shop

On the 'This image is not available for commercial licensing' pages the tags box shows:

Fatal error: Cannot use object of type Memcache as array in /var/www/vhosts/fineartamerica.com/httpdocs/databaseinformation.php on line 118

In qualified pages, clicking on a tag goes to a Page Not Found.

Yes, plenty of glitches today. Can't wait to see what new features may be on the way, lol.

I've complained about this before, and been ignored. I hope your complaint makes it clearer to them. I think this definitely hurts my licensing opportunities. When I opted out, it was because I wanted to handle my licensing myself.

Opting in and overpricing the licenses is not a suitable option. I've sold plenty of licenses in the past that were quite affordable. My bio-blurb clearly states to contact me regarding licensing. People have been licensing from me for years before I even came to FAA, just by emailing me an inquiry.

TRAV - you took those words right out of my mouth...that would be the simple and best solutuion....perfect solution in fact

Michelle Wrighton

I read it the same way, that the image is NOT available for commercial licencing anywhere. That is definitely not good! Feeling a bit relieved that I never opted in to the licencing program in the first place.
