How many of you are on Pinterest? If so, do you have any tips? I just upgraded to a "business account" and have started promoting my work on there from FAA, but it seems like the only people who can see my work is friends. I understand it's a process, people pinning your pin and so on, but is there a better way to get seen (without having to pay for promotions)? I would also like to use Pinterest to feature other artists on FAA as well (paying it forward), but am unsure how and where on Pinterest to do that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i never bought into it. i think its a waste of time. only joined because everyone took my stuff and crammed it in there. while people use it to showcase certain works, overall its very hard to find things there. people like collecting stuff there, that's about it. i have a page there, and there are, i think over a 100 mike savad related pin boards.

It takes time to build a following without paying.

I recommend having a different board for different subjects.

I simply Pin everything as I upload here. Over time I have developed a following slowly. I have a LOT of repins.

People can find you by searching on Pin by your keywords.

For me I can only trace one sale back to P directly but I am quite sure there are a lot more.

Here's mine. I have a business account, but do not push it as a business. I have limited images there, and try to be picky what I post there.

My knowledge about Pinterest is very limited- and I'm beginning to realize just how limited it is. I am in the process of looking and following each one of your boards, but am unsure exactly how to join a group board? It's very possible I'm overthinking this, but is everyone just pinning to their own board and then people stumble upon it somehow? Are the key words the ones we're using while uploading images to FAA, JC Findley? Thank you again for everyone's help and patience while I figure this out.

pinterest is great when your having a wedding, and your want to put favors, and dresses and ideas together. or if you like going on a scavenger hunt to find things on the net. birdhouses, doors, windows, door knobs etc. and its nice to see all those ideas in one place. but for advertising, i don't think i get much out of it. my analytics there do show more hits than i thought, but these are people that just pin for fun. but in some ways it might be a brand recognition kind of thing, and its best to be everywhere when you can be.

Kori, I use Pinterest differently than nearly everyone here. For me, it is not overt promotion, but very subtle promotion. I do commercial work and commissions which require the client to plunk down a substantial, non-refundable deposit on nothing more than a promise, possibly a referral or two and a look at my online portfolio.

I use my Pinterest boards to add another layer of "here's what I like, here's what I think is cool." The vast majority of my pins are not my work, but my boards have turned out to be a beautiful final-link close. I've landed a handful of commissions and two ongoing commercial accounts by just emailing a link at the right moment.

Kori, I think someone has to invite you to a group board. Just like a bunch of pins and eventually someone will invite you to a group board.

This is mine https://www.pinterest.com/artistmichellew/ I use it sporadically, mostly when I add new work.

Although I do make sure every now and then I spend some time pinning or re-pinning stuff that is not my own and that seems to be the best way of 'encouraging' more pins. I do get click throughs from Pinterest to my website, so it has value in that respect...but I am not sure how often in results in sales. Admittedly I am not as 'social' on social networks as one needs to be to find success with them :/

Thank you so much for everyone's help! Michelle, I'm not as active on social networks as I need to be, either. I'm going to stick with Pinterest until I figure it out and then try branching out to other social networks. Twitter is also something I know absolutely nothing about, but will try out sometime in the near future. My site on Pinterest is https://www.pinterest.com/kashcres/ Up until now, I've only used it for personal use, but am going to give the business aspect a shot.

i would work on places like twitter first, then move on to pinterest. building up a fan base at twitter takes a lot of time, pinterest you can post any time you want.

That's a very good point, Mike. I already have an account on Twitter, but have never used it. I'm going to give it a try this evening. Thanks!

I'm like Greg, I'm very picky about what I post there. I might get on there once a week. I used to post images, and then I can easily see how people can steal images there. So I started posting more tote bags, pilliows, phone cases, gifts etc. I haven't seen any benefit from it yet. I am a part of some groups and I'll pin my images to the different groups to help with exposure and to keep the images active. That's where I usually get pinned or liked. I only joined pinterest hoping for more exposure. Some on here have had a lot of luck there. I just haven't seen it.

I do like Twitter better for promoting. It took me a while to get the hang of it. It seemed hard to understand, and I'm still learning. I'm about to hit 2000 followers. That may not seem like much to some of artists that have been on there longer and push more, but that's an exciting benchmark for me. That's where I get the most activity. I'm thinking one of my sales came from there and have been recently contacted by a Dr. looking to update his office and really likes my work. Says he'll be making a purchase soon. Only time will tell if he does, but at least you get noticed there.

Pinterest is probably the most successful of all the social media I use. I would guess at least 20% of my sales is generated from it. I have two non-business accounts. Pinning to popular group boards brings the most exposure and re-pins. I use the browser pin button. I have many pins with hundreds of re-pins from pining to groups. Timing is a key to success. Pining on weekends mornings is the best time.

Just a few days ago I was contacted by a printing company who discovered one of my images on Pinterest that they are looking to license and is also interested in licensing some of my other work.

Hope a few tips here helps. Here's my main site. https://www.pinterest.com/natureslite/

I literally just copy all my keywords when I upload and put them in the Pin.

Same thing I do when posting to Flickr. Saves a lot of time.

Maybe third time is a charm. I've tried responding twice earlier to this thread today, but it won't post.

Okay, now that this will post...Dale, that is extremely helpful advice. I had no idea about timing. I am still figuring out how to find and enter group boards on Pinterest. I took your advice, Mike, and am trying out Twitter, but with not much luck. When I post an image from FAA, only the "embed" code appears (not the image itself). For some reason, Twitter has a wrong email address for me. I have tried to change it, but it tells me that email is already taken. Looks like I will be spending Friday night just trying to figure out social media. Thanks again for everyone's help
