What Are They?

There are dozens of these along the edge of the water on the concrete in Key West. They're about 6-10 inches long and slimy looking. I'm guessing snail or slug family. I put it in Google images and it returned all frogs. Anybody got a clue?

Guessing Sea Slugs, but I always thought they lived in deeper depths.

Mike, I like the question mark. I didn't mean it as a contest. I haven't a clue. I think sea cucumbers are more cigar looking.

Vincent, that's what I thought at first, but don't snails have shells or does that grow later?

Not a Sea Cucumber - those look like cucumbers and squirt if you pick one up.

Some kind of marine slug.

William, those is them..... Thanks. Now I can read about them. I wonder if they're edible like escargot? Ugly mothers.

they can be poisonous depending what they ate. they are not a common food item, but people do eat them.

Mexico is on record for saying they will not pay for it. Slugs or no slugs. Tunneling or no tunneling. Drone or no drone.

I imagine you would have seen them on the menu in Key West if they were tasty and local and better than flown in chicken wings.

Bob Slitzan

I'll try them with bacon, everything tastes good with bacon. If I drop dead it will be from cholesterol not the Sea Hare.

Edward, I think they are like Cicadas, only come out every few years. We've been here a few years and I have never noticed them in this quantity. If they were regulars, our regulars would find a way to make them taste good.

as you said bacon, that was the second thing that came from my mouth before i read it -- everything is good with bacon.

i wonder if they have any other good uses. like sea cucumbers i think make a good sunscreen or are they used for cuts? something like that. i only remember half of what they teach on survival shows.

Bacon, cheese and now Srirachia sauce. Who ever said the American diner wasn't adventurous.

Maybe they are coming in on the warming oceans. I know the lobsters in Maine are moving north to the delight of the Canadian fishing industry.

...
Mike - that's aloe a plant.

Mike, I can assure you, I AIN'T picking one up. That is unless they're worth money for what you can squeeze out of them or their rarity. Then I'd get some heavy gloves.

Just add a starch, a healthy salad, and you've got a great meal.

Best served with a delicate white wine.

this is that specialty niche. get some more shots of them and you'll have sea slug aficionado's coming in to get them. there is a fan for everything it seems.

My new pets have been visited 21 times since 3pm, I'd say by the locations, about half are bots. That means in 5 hours, probably less because I had no keywords until I found out what they were, so I had about 10 possible sales. That doesn't count Mike who wants the originals, animals that is.

google is all of those things. the slugs - are google. probably a new camera recording the sewers of the local area. to google they are "frogs". like the ufo in Roswell was a "weather balloon"

google slug surveillance devices.

imagine finding one of these in your garden, just eating it whole?

i wonder how they react to salt? suppose you can hear them scream?

One very important lesson from all of this is this;

How can any of you go through life unwilling to learn about everything you can about your earthmates?

At least Bob noticed something?

This is the same curiosity which, like a child, brings people's minds to recognized the wonders of our earth and who we share it with beyond our human friends.

Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus... OOPPS Wrong Discussion.
The Sea Hares don't seem to have eyes, although this one looks like he has a sinister one but it's only the coloring in just the right position. I shot a lot more of them (don't know why) and looked close with the zoom lens didn't see them looking back, thank goodness. This guy's head looks like a dragon. Speaking of guys, anyone know how to check which sex they are? Mike?
Have we had enough on hares and slugs and frogs and slime?

Probably have to use a similar method as when squirrel hunting. Some seasons only allow shooting male squirrels, so you have to shake the tree and see if nuts rattle. Grab the Sea Hares, shake 'em, listen for distinct noises. ;)

I'll try most any food, you never know when you'll end up loving something. But I have one firm gourmet rule... if it's moving... I ain't eating it (unless someone is just swinging it in my face). And BTW, NO BUGS dead or alive, even covered with chocolate or smothered in bacon.

Bob
http://bobsphotography.com

Vincent Von Frese

I agree with you Bob.......if it moves"I ain't eat'n".

Leave wildlife alone and go to some store selling regular old fashioned salutered pigs, cows and chickens to eat. Fish is available too which saves the trouble of hunting and fishing.

There are too many people today and not enough wildlife and wild fish to feed them.

Roy Pedersen

They are Sea Hares. When they want to move quickly they fly through the water and look so graceful compared to what they look like on the sea bed.
