What Is The Best Way To Limit The Entries In A Contest, Then Begin Voting?

I enjoy hosting contests, not only for my group but for others as well. I would like to have one where only a certain number of entries can be accepted and then start the voting. Is it possible to set a contest up this way? My latest contest I wanted to limit the entries to 50 and then start the voting. However the set up wouldn't let me and I had to set it up to take entries for a day before starting the voting. I suppose I could have just deleted images after the first 50 the first day. I ended up changing the rules to include more than 50.

There has to be an easier way to do this.

Also, why don't people read the rules? This can be so frustrating and I feel bad deleting images that don't fit the contest criteria. But I do it anyway because it isn't fair to those that follow the rules.

I would be curious about this too, Ann. I don't like the contests that allow 10 entries per person. You can't really scroll through them and enjoy them.

I prefer 1-3 entries - that way we get to look at everything because it doesn't go on for 20 pages. But limiting to so many, I don't think that would work.

I agree. I have participated in contests and the votes are so diluted. I now have a group and will be faced with starting contests soon. I wonder if anyone has ever tried a context that has a first round and then a final round with a limited number of candidates? People would have five votes on the first round to use, the top 20 would then go into the final where everyone had two votes. Not knowing the system behind the contests yet it might not be possible or easy.
Is it feasible, as mentioned above to say the first 50 pieces submitted are in the contest?
Also, do people vote for their own piece usually? If so is it a bad pr move suggest they don't?
And finally, does the system make it easy to fun a contest? Does it do the management work in showing the artwork and how many votes each has? Or does the admin have to do that?

My personal favorites are the ones with limited entries, some subject that is at least a little bit obscure, and where you can vote for as many as you like, but that's just me. The really general contests usually have way to many to look at individually. I do like to vote for more than my own. I consider it a little bit of an "honor" thing, but if it takes an hour to scroll through because there are so many, I generally rely on the thumbnails, which really isn't fair. You don't get a good look that way.

I appreciate the comments. Hopefully we can find an answer.

too many rules spoils a contest. limiting to 50 only makes a contest boring. if you want to limit it, hold it for a day only. no one is going to count or keep track of how many images are in there.

@catherine - people vote on their own pieces, they get their friends, family etc to vote as well. many win by a landslide because of this. and its a reason why many hate the contests. i personally don't vote on anything at all. if you don't want people to vote for themselves (and i see no reason why we shouldn't), you can make it a judge only thing.

I recently did a contest - limited to two images per member of FAA - unlimited voting, encouraged outside promotion and vote solicitation: http://fineartamerica.com/contests/computer-digital-non-representational-abstract-and-fractal-art.html?tab=leaderboard

I don't know why anyone limits the voting to a jury or just to FAA members - the idea should be to get our work outside, off FAA, maybe someone will see a piece and buy it.
