Broken Camera.

Great, I have broken my new d5300 ( not even 5months old ). Estimated repair price is 605NZD (about 400USD) for new sensor, calibration and work. That is pretty high, since I have found prices of D5300 body starting at 720NZD. Would it be possible to sell it for spare parts? I have no idea. Another way would be a new cheaper body or used d5300 since I have two batteries. But people at TradeME(new zealand Ebay like site) are pretty crazy with the prices. It is reall suffering here without DSLR, only with crapy phone camera.

Btw if anyone is interested, here are my photos from NZ.

Spare parts and as is cameras don't go for much on Ebay, largely because people really aren't that into DIY repairs I'm guessing.

Type various cameras and 'as is' into the search and see what sort of prices they fetch

Mike warranty varies from country to country and in most instances "user damage" isn't covered. Unless you buy an extended warranty.

I guess warranty is not for clumsy hands. Also it doesn´t have international warranty.

Thanks Edward.
Right after destroing it, Ww have visited some beautiful places like this jaw dropping limestone arch. About 40m high and with 200m long tunnel right behind it.

Now we are planning to go to Southern Alps and lake Tekapo with one of the clearest night skies in the world, I don´t want to go there with a cellphone camera :D

Sorry to hear about the demise of your camera. It makes me realize I would probably be in your shoes if I didn't own a Pentax steel body. A week ago when strap was handing on my shoulder, slipped off and dropped to the side walk. A small area was cracked. If it makes you feel any better this site has beautiful phone images: eyeem.com

We've all done something similar. Here's my story from about 20 years ago.

I had just purchased the newly-released Nikon 8008 film camera. Maybe on the third or fourth roll, I decided to load some Kodak B&W infrared film. Since IR film was prone to fogging if loaded in ambient light, it had to be loaded either in a completely dark room or a changing bag. I pulled out my changing bag, put the camera in it and also the film still in its plastic canister. So now I'm doing this completely by feel. Opened the camera back, took the film out of the canister, loaded it onto the reel and pulled the film tongue onto the take-up spool. Or so I thought. I said to myself, this feels strange. When I closed the camera back and pressed the shutter, I heard a sickening crunching noise, and I knew all was not well.

So I took the camera out of the bag, opened the camera back, and pulled the film out to see what happened. Turns out I had put my thumb right through the titanium shutter blades. Almost brand new camera and I had ruined the shutter. That was a $150 repair (expensive back then), almost half what I paid for the camera. Those titanium shutter blades are what enabled the 8008 to have a top speed of 1/8000 sec., which was quite the advance back then. Lesson learned. Don't use IR film in this camera, for one. Too easy to damage the shutter if you can't see what you're doing.

Upgrade suggestion: Replace your D5300 with a D5500 if you can afford to. Outstanding low-light capability compared to the previous D5xxx line.

Is replace it and look for refurbs if that $720 was for a new one.

Greetings Martin, I too like everyone else are sorry to hear of your demise. I too have been in your situation, I was sickened when my Nikon flew off my shoulder running for a St. Car here in New Orleans. As Suzzane mentioned there are some fantastic cell phone images being produced ranging from 5 pixel upwards. Perhaps the least expensive remedy because you are pressed for time look into using a notebook camera some fantastic photo quality 16 pixels and higher. As a photographer you have to do what you have to do and continue to take photos. The equipment may not be exactly what you want to use but it will take your mind off the fact you destroyed your camera. Hopefully something may work out for you before you travel again. I have been uploading 5pixel images and some are stunning along with my Cannon EOS D 5 pixel its how I have at the moment but I am still taking images and creating some remarkable photos

As a reminder when using your cell camera always check and use the desired app control for taking images on a cell phone.

Don't forget you can make minor fix using whatever photo app for minor light adjustment taking cell phone images... Also, if it helps try using 35mm film throw-a-way camera I used those as well and took stunning images with them when my Cannon AE 1 along with 1,000 mm lens was stolen. It may not quite be what you are accustomed to but you will still have the opportunity to use your expertise as a photographer and be creative.

Best of luck to you,
Cheers and Tis the season in New Orleans Happy Mardi Gras!!!

Condolences, Martin!

Does anyone out there have an insurance plan for their equipment that they would recommend? I have some coverage under a Valuable Personal Property policy that does cover damage. Just wondering what, if anything, everyone else does.

Next camera you buy make sure it can take some hits. I haven't researched smaller cameras for tough exteriors but I would have to have one. The more you use it the bigger the chances of dropping it. I have dropped mine twice in three years.

I had a similar heart breaking moment two winters ago. I trying to take a photo of an eclipse through my telescope. I didn't have the T adapter yet so I got to hold my camera very very still up to the eye piece, used my monopod to brace. Clouds rolled in, time to pack it up. While picking up the telescope's tripod clipped the monopod out of my hand, I managed to not drop the telescope but my camera landed flat on it's eye piece, shattering it. :( No good shots, and now no camera. It was a hard night. I had extra protection plans via geek squad through BestBuy (still do) and was able to put the value of that camera towards a new one. Really helped soften the blow. Good news was my lens wasn't hurt at all!

Could you get it covered under homeowner's / renters insurance?

My 'horror' story - was out filming a waterfall - slipped in on slick mossy rocks - the camera swung out and came crashing into the boulder - and fell into the water. That was it for the day for me. The next day, after buying a new, better, camera, my wife and I were out tracking to another waterfall and got caught in a rainstorm - ruined her 'movie' camera. Let me tell you - that was an expensive vacation out in the woods.

I was unpacking the car after a trip put my camera on the ground and forget it was there. Sat out in the rain all night! After drying out in front of a dehumidifier it has been fine. Canon 6d. Must have good weather sealing.

When I rough stuff up its usually after hiking. I set a lens or something on top of the car, drive off and watch it go careening down the road behind me once I hit about 40mph.

Last time was with an iPhone 5. Flew off the car a few miles from the Okracoke island ferry in NC. Someone spotted it but before they could grab it, it got run over.

The ferry guys ended up with it and returned it. It had tire tracks on the case. Other than that is was fine, not even a scratch. Case was a $5.00 cheapo from 5 Below.

Adam: Haha I am allway leaving an solar charger on the car roof. Luckily the cables leads to the cars so it wonĄt fall down.
So I have bought an used d5300 in auction with a lot of stuff I don´t actually need (like lenses and tripod I already have) so now I will have a work with reselling it :D But it is great feel to have camera again.
