Argh Keywords Argh

Why are spaces being put after all the commas in our keywords every time we edit a page? This is a huge issue, I edit pages all day long and use every available character for my keywords. This means every time I edit a page I have to go in and manually take out every one of those added spaces before I can post my change; otherwise, it won't fit. Please fix this, it's really icky and I can't bring myself to update any more until I don't have to delete 35 spaces every time I go into page edit.

Do you have txts with the general keywords for categories - landscape, nature etc? I just copy them from those, and update the txts when better words enter my head

here's a workaround for you that won't always work perfectly if you have any two-word keywords:
1. Open Notepad.
2. Cut the keywords from the Pixels.com edit field
3. Paste the keywords into notepad
4. Search and replace all spaces with nothing.
6. Edit, making any changes needed, including adding spaces back in for two-word keywords.
5. Copy the "condensed" keywords in notepad
6. Paste the "condensed" keywords from notepad into the pixels.com edit field.
This process can be finished in maybe 10 seconds, once you get the hang of it, plus the time it takes to edit any changes you want.

Gregory - exactly, Notepad or any word processing program shortcut= CTRL F

OK, I have been editing a bunch lately and hadn't noticed an issue so I tried it again and specifically looked this time.

I am not having that issue on my end at all. I tried both an edit without changing the image and tried it changing the image. No issue at all.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I ask because I am thinking it might have something to do with either the actual computer settings or perhaps the browser setting. (I am using Chrome btw.) I know when typing in some editing programs it will automatically fix what it thinks are mistakes IF you have it set that way. Perhaps the web browser you are using or even the computer settings are doing that?

My guess is if it were on FAA's side I would be getting the same results but I am not overly tech savvy.

When exactly does it add the spaces? When you first open it or only when you change an image?

Since I use a LOT of keyword phrases Gregory's work-around wouldn't work for me but it could for many.

I've been editing lately as well. I'm using Chrome. No extra spaces in the keywords or any other issues here.

Roy Erickson

I use so few key words that I suppose I could add extra spaces. Looking at some of y'all's work - you are using the identical key words more than one time on the same image.

Brian MacLean

I dont have that issue, I'm using Safari and occasionally Internet Explorer when at work

JC Findley

Yes, identical keywords sometimes happen by accident because I forgot I already had them. When it is part of a phrase it is purposeful.

Newwwman

i use chrome , never had any issue when editing

Joe Burgess

Chrome here. No problems.
That would be extremely annoying.

Could it be your browser's autocorrect?

Travel Pics

I upload with spaces and Fne Art America deletes those spaces.

So I add in the spaces again.

I want spaces!

Haven't experienced that problem. The problem I have when editing is that the count above the edit box will say I only have 500 characters used but then when I go to submit the work it won't allow me to and will tell me I have 501 or 502 characters, even though the count above the edit box will still say I just have 500.

Mike Savad

its gotta be something in your browser. i just checked and i'm not seeing that, like is there some kind of grammar corrector in there? sort of like auto capitalize?

i've had the 500 thing. if its right on the line, its some how 501. i've seen that come up in tweets now and then.

agree, must be your browser as I have never experienced that either.

It's fixed this morning ("morning" being relative) but I have no idea when it got fixed. I had to remove spaces from five sets of keywords before I gave up last night. There were no changes to my FireFox settings before the issue, nor since the issue, it hasn't even been shut down since then. Of course I realize I can use Search and Replace to remove spaces but I use a LOT of long-tail keywords. So, thanks for the suggestions, it's all fixed, I don't know why it broke, and yes you may blame me like usual ;)

JC Findley

Would never blame you, and odd things happen at times.

Glad it is working now.

I was just going to post that I have Firefox and don't have that problem, but I see your problem self-solved. The interwebs are mysterious like that.

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

Oh good, then I'll just keep breaking FAA in weird and wonderous ways JC!

Kathleen Bishop

I copy all blocks of keywords and all item descriptions, along with respective image titles on a Word doc before the initial upload then copy and paste. I can always refer back to that doc if I want to edit keywords or if there is an issue later. I never type directly into the fields on upload.

I've edited a few recently and did not have any issue with spaces added to the keywords field but once in a while I'll get an error message on the initial upload advising that I've exceeded the 500 character limit. I have not. I always do a word count in Word before pasting into that field. I suspect that Susan's issue is related to this issue. I have to delete characters several times before the stupid upload interface is happy. By then, I am not.

Newwwman

so its Unanimous - Susan broke it again

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

SEE?? Knew you wouldn't let me down Newwwman.

Kathleen, I have taken to adding the keywords to the EXIF on the photos lately, and I too keep a template file. I have seen the erroneous character count issue many times, but nothing like what was happening last night. Btw, sometimes the character count will go off if the template adds a backslash before an apostrophe.

A quick bit of advice on keywords please. Do keywords have robe one word or can they be 2 or more? Blue, Lighthouse, Blue lighthouse for example?

Newwwman

I know you can do at least two (probablymore)...put quotes around them

Mike Savad

i don't know about the quotes. anything in between commas is a phrase

light house, lighthouse, light, house - each give different results. and if you have the room, put all the combo's. it used to be that you would have to have plurals attached as well, which made it far more of a pain.

Newwwman

Sorry, my bad - I think mike is right, i was thinking of another site

Russell Collins

Mick, lighthouse, is part of lighthouses, so would not a search on lighthouse pull up light house, and lighthouses please?

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

I'd love a definitive answer to this too. I always enter the plural assuming the singular will also be found. Has anyone ever put this to rigorous testing?

Mike Savad

i think the only thing plurals do is - it places the plural versions above the none because its a more exact word. but ideally i don't think it does anything now. the only plurals you should add are spelling changes.

city
cities

horse
horseys

etc

A minor modification to Gregory's suggestion: instead of searching for spaces and replacing them with nothing, search for comma space and replace with comma. That way all the spaces after commas get removed and spaces in phrases remain.

Russell Collins

A help request. I have uploaded my very first real image of some fish in a gallery. I would be grateful if you could take a look at my efforts and my keywords and give some advice please. Not bothered too much about not liking the actual painting, but would appreciate any marketing related advice you could give that I can apply to all the hundreds of others that I will be putting up.

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

Firstly Russell, your painting is gorgeous. Secondly, your description, not so much. While some might say I would be among those here who appreciate a teeny tiny bit of humor on the extremely rare occasion, the description of your art is not the place to do it if it's at the expense of writing one that will actually bring the traffic looking for that particular piece of art. I would suggest you write an accurate description first and then add the humor at the end. This piece's description is a really simple example of what I mean:

Where Mermaids Play Fractal Art Print by Susan Maxwell Schmidt

You also need to use every character space available to you in the keyword text box.

Mike Savad

Photography Prints
is this the one?

its washed out looking and could be sharper. people looking for certain animals won't appreciate being led to believe there are any animals in this at all.

you can't have deer in the keywords if there isn't any. expecto patronum? really, harry potter fans won't like the spam, and it won't attract muggles either. you mentioned antlers, reindeer, night despite it being day. i would not call that a waterfall. rapids is a stretch. you have list everything in the scene as it is. it can't be both day and night.

i don't mind humor i think it brings people in. but if you mention there is something hiding, it should be just obvious enough to see it. i would remove the spam

Photography Prints
this one needs to be scanned in. its not a landscape because its a portrait seascape.

Thank you both for your advice.

There are deer there, three of them but admittedly not very clear.

Abbie Shores

The keywords to images MUST fit the images exactly or quite often you find yourself removed from the search

Russell Collins

Do I assume then Abbie that random checks are carried out?

Mike Savad

random sort of. people rat you out. if you show up in the search where you don't belong, if you ask us to look at your keywords (or not), in the threads etc. there are many spotters that report stuff like that. but it doesn't do you any good either. people looking for deer and not seeing any - may not even look at the rest of your stuff.

David King

I found the deer, I think. It's kind of like playing Where's Waldo.

Gruffalo appears to be a fictional children's book character, copyrighted I'm sure. I couldn't find him in there anyway.

Russell Collins

He (if I remember correctly) is peeking out from behind the 2nd tree on the right hand bank of the stream.

I see a couple of hours of redoing keywords etc. What is the sense of asking for advice if you don't follow the good advice.

Mike Savad

even so though, that's a hard search. i still don't see it there.

sunrise is spelled wrong btw. sunris

do the worst offenders if you have some you know is way off base. spamming is a problem on all sites. many want to get seen first and will often put things in much worse than you had. i've seen people use my name as if that was going to work for them.

but you can still mention things like - nature, the type of tree, arbor, landscape, forest, hidden glen, and stuff like that. along with colors and so on.

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

I would still classify that as a landscape for content, just not for orientation. Two different things methinks.
