Reminiscent

When someone comments that your work is reminiscent of some other artist's work.....what is your normal reaction?

1. Welcoming?

2. Questioning?

3. Disagreeing?

4. Or just Ignoring?

And Why?

That would depend entirely on what artist they were referring to.

I generally take it as flattering. Of course that depends on the tone. Often my work references famous works, so....

I know it all depends on what, why, and how a comment might be made.

Going to the extreme

Let's say the comment is , "Your work looks just like............'s."

If it were a masters, I would jump up and down, if a crappy artist, I would delete the comment.

Roger,

Also depends on the "Reminiscenter" is. That has an effect on my affect,

Rich,

You're right...I forgot "who"

Roger, when I compliment others I often note the similarities of their work to a famous artist. I am always attempting to pay a compliment. With a good background in art history it is difficult not to notice and comment on the antecedents of anothers work.

If they said of my seascape, Turner, I would love them forever. Anyone else? BLERGH

Depends on the source or as Rich put it; "Reminiscenter"... but mostly i take it rather casually and try to see it as they might right or wrong...

I used to disagree when people mentioned similarities, because I took their statement literally, and I knew that there were actually differences that they weren't seeing. Then I realized that people are just trying to make sense of what they're seeing, and trying to put their perceptions into words. They believe another artist's work looks like mine, because in their mind there are stylistic similarities. Now I welcome people's perceptions, because they have a right to understand reality in any way they choose, and I learn something in the process.

Good way of looking at it, Joel

Doesn't bother me at all.

There's truly nothing new under the sun; just new 'spins'.

I remembered that I told you your work is similar to Joseph Cornell. I meant big compliment.
I only saw his work once in a major museum. so unique one of kind. Maybe i can dig out some of the photo of his work.

I wouldn't be happy or impress if my works reminiscent of grandma Moses LOL

If they say any name, presumably it's an artist that they like, but it doesn't follow that they're my favorite, just try to understand where they're coming from first

Of course it might just be the first name that popped into their head and not be reminiscent of anything they've ever done

I find that some people are offended too easily.

Out of your four choices, I would welcome the comment. If I didn't recognize the artist, I would then question. Then I would view that person's work and draw my own conclusions.

I recently complemented a particular unknown New York City photographer whose work I really liked,.....

I told him,....Your seeing and vision in your images remind me so much of the photographer Pete Turner.

This photographer did not have much confidence in himself.

His gift and ability to see and convey abstract shapes, designs and color in his surrounding world was awesome as I saw it.

Yet he did not see that talent in himself.

I frequently take the time to tell an artist whose work touches me,...that I feel I cannot,...NOT,..compliment their work and talent,.... weather they know it or not doesn't matter to me.

I truly enjoy viewing creative seeing well done,...no matter the medium.

None of us produce work,..then hide it away never to be seen.....We may produce it because we are driven from within,...but ultimately favorable acceptance via a buyer or others reinforces our continued efforts and accomplishment.

A little different spin on your original question Roger

Marty,

I've met Peter and that is a very high compliment indeed! I took a weekend class with Ernst Haas, and that literally changed my life! I went mostly as a printer, Cibachromes and he was into a much better process, much more expensive, dye transfers, and were glorious!

There are artists out there, that will change the World, just need to be found and understood!

Rich

p.s. I'm not one of those!

No one has ever said that to me. har har har......seriously....no one.....

In any case, take as a compliment and reply courteously.
