I am in the process of searching for an image that I have in my head, but can't find. I've written a book and will be self publishing in the near future. Being the type of reader that is attracted by the cover first, the title second and the content third - I think the right cover is REALLY important.
The book is a Romance/Fantasy novel involving a magic Tapestry, the Human World and the Fairy World (and these are not the winged variety, but small of stature and able to pass as humans) and a false world called the Between. The characters span 3 generations but the female lead is in her early 50's. She moves to a secluded cabin near the hot springs of North Carolina. The Tapestry itself is huge and is of all the flora and fauna, in exquisite detail, around the Cabin.
If that's enough information, GREAT. Please send me a reply - either here or go to my own page and send me an email (Jennifer Kohler). If you need more information, I'll be happy to chat with you.
I take lots of pictures and nothing feels right. My mother is an artist, but is focused in the southwest. So reaching out and hoping I find the right image.
Is it yours?
Thank you
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer...I may have a few photographs suitable for your cover. Write me at rockalittlephoto@hotmail.com I can send you samples. easier to do via emails. I hope you are calling the book "The Between"..its what I caught from your description and it has a mystery to add to the book itself.
when you write my email title it "the between" so I know who I am talking to. I get tons of emails.
thanx

Unfortunately I think that I can not help you this time, but I must tell you that this is a kind of very interesting post.

I'm not sure I've got anything that would work for the cover but it does sound worth reading. Reminds me a lot of "Nine Princes of Amber".

Hi Jennifer as I read what you described of your book I immediately thought you might like Mystic Sparrow's work - this is her page and you can contact her from there http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/mystic-sparrow.html

I thought of it because it has a feeling of being in the woods, it has a sense of foreboding, good positive and negative space, I think it would make a good book cover. But there's no sense of anything magical to it, which would be important if that's what you want. See what I mean? So if you could describe what it is that you're looking for as your cover we could probably direct you to art work that would match it.

Maybe this will help....
The image I have in my head looks a lot like a Tapestry. In my book, the tapestry is 'living'... the birds, insects, critters, trees - even the light, the rain, the day the night, are there - but only seen (in the beginning) out of the corner of your eye. The colors are vibrant. The cabin in one large room and the tapestry is large enough that it divides the living area from the bedroom. It's intricate, delicate and magical. The humans and fairies in the story don't need to be 'front and center' of the cover art. The Between is a false world - no living things - they are all false images - stale, flat. It's a place of banishment.
I'm just not capable of creating what my mind sees. The picture anyway... And I know that there are so many talented artists here....
Thanks
Jennifer

That is a great description. You did actually include magic in it, which is not something that everyone does.
I'm going to make a few suggestions.
1. Search for the word magic, and look for styles of art you like, then contact the artist and ask them to make the art you imagine. A commission would be far more specific than a general search.
2. If you don't want to take the time to commission work, be flexible in your vision. For instance, you described quite a bit. It sounds lovely. But a book cover with that many details would be visually overwhelming.
3. Don't settle. Find something you love. It will represent your book, and you are right. It is very important.
Now I'm going to see if I can find work for you. :)

A friend of mine on Facebook, posted this:
The cover should be tapestry with images hidden within...your fairies, the cabin, etc. Kind of like a "Where's Waldo". That kind of image would make me scoop up that book quickly.
I told her that it will be an e-book first, but I do want to print also. Wouldn't it be cool if the images would 'shift' with the angle it's viewed at?

Go to FASGallery.com. (click on the avatar) There are over 4900 images.
Let me know if anything works for you. I will send you the file for free. That would include any of the original photos.
Glad to help you out if I can.

Hi Jennifer, I've been doing commissioned book covers and comic book covers lately. Click on my icon to see my work here. Sci-fi and fantasy are my specialties. Most of my work you'll see have characters that are younger than yours and many are sexy, but I do commissions and can easily do an older woman and I think my style would fit into your concept. Thanks.

Daniel Eskridge has a great portfolio.
I don't think as a photographer I could help, but please feel free to view my portfolio anyway! I'm in my early 50's, live in NC and love that genre, so would love to read the book!
Please look at Cynthia Decker's portfolio, she's from Asheville NC....

I'm still working on my rewrite and still looking at images for the cover. As soon as final decisions are made I will post both here and on my own page. It's a lot of work to do when I also still WORK. So, much slower than I'd like, but progressing.
Thank you all for your beautiful images.

Just a thought, you might want to look at some infrared photography... It has a different feel to it.
I don't think I have anything that would work for what you need ... Feel free to take look though ...

You can find plenty of infrared photography on FAA and also on the Internet.

Sounds like an interesting book. Similar in concept to Clive Barker's book Weaveworld. The Weaveworld cover is interesting in that it uses the tapestry weaving, around the edge of the cover art, to tie the concept together. Check it out. Its very cool. Don't have any photos to show you but good luck with your book.

Here are some artists that may have work like you are requesting.

These are cool too:
Work with two artists works and overlay them. Example:
