Classic Still Life, Anyone Love It Too?

Gosh, this is my MOST favorite subject to photograph and work with.. I create the scene myself and compose it... from elements that seem to fit together to me.

I'm trying to figure out a spot in my house that I can setup stuff. I have actually picked up a few items thinking they would look great in a still life. Also toyed with the idea of getting some sheet rock squares and painting different backgrounds on them, then there is the problem of a decent interesting surface/table to contend with!! Have some ideas for that too but....time...not enough of...oh god, and storage of said items! No space here ;o)

Heather, those papers can get kinda expensive! Plus they are on the small side, which might be fine for tiny or short objects!

Lowe's did have 2 'x 2' sheet rock panels, cheap, cut already so not some big 4 x 8 panel to try and get home...in a car, and I could repaint one over and over and plaster. Fabric is a maybe too, particularly the remnant tables.
Someone is supposed to be 'giving' me some studio lights that he doesn't use anymore, I have no idea how to use them but of course I said 'yes'! I'd love to have them...I know at some point I do want to focus on some still life and maybe try a real 'live' person.....maybe ;o))

Alright...I checked and actually have a few 'classic' kinda still life shots but I did not set these up, found in antique shop and taken with owner's permission, last one different store but with permission. The shoes sold to a wedding venue in Texas last year :)

Please don't start image threads. Discussions, yes, but not just posts with images on. (Warning more for people coming into the thread....type words)

As for classic still life, love them when well done. Rosy pallet is excellent

I agree. Those scrapbooking 12 x 12 inch paper squares are too small for most still lifes and most likely copyrighted

I've used chalkboard paint on wood, two by fours painted with crackle paint, slate, oil drums, large marble tiles from Home Depot.

My favorite surface is a pair of "Raccoon Stretchers". Two planks of really tortured, grainy wood I got at a barn recycling business. The guy said they were used to skin raccoons.

Thanks Edward for the "raccoon Stretchers"! I learn something today. perhaps someone can create a classic still life with the "rabbit shin glue",
( Rabbit skin glue which used In traditional oil painting as practiced by the Renaissance painter, skin glue was used to coat the canvas. This is necessary because the linseed oil that forms the base of most oil paint contains linolenic acid that will destroy the canvas fibers over time. Though this did help to seal the canvas, they still had to cover it with another layer of a substance similar to paint in order to protect it. The primary purpose of Rabbit-skin glue is to stretch the canvas.)

My backgrounds are textures that I overlay on the photographs. All were shot with the same wall in my home office.

The hardest part about still life is setting it up. It took a long time to set this one up. Then, if you're doing food, you have to finish the painting before the food spoils!! That can be motivating...

Love, love, love (classic) still life. Have no idea how to set one up. I've said in other threads, I can compose and draw a classic still life very well, but setting up one to shoot with the camera....just can't seem to get the arrangement, background and lighting right. I may try again this weekend. There are surprisingly few books on photographic still life setups. It frustrates me no end because I have several books of still life by the Dutch and Flemish masters, which are my favorite.

Still life isn't really my forte but I try it now and again. Here's one that I did a couple of years ago with some homegrown tomatoes and basil leaves. I really enjoy flower arranging so I probably should try to make an arrangement to use for a still life drawing one of these days.

I enjoy still life. While the weather is bad, that is my photo type I am currently taking.
