Etsy

Can I post my FAA images on Etsy for marketing purposes? (totes, pillows, etc.) If so, how do I do it?

You can always screen shot the page then crop to the product image shown.

Thanks for your response; however I don't understand screenshot.

PrtSc Key on a Windows keyboard and paste the image in a paint program. Then crop to what you need.

Thanks!

I do a google search for my own images - the pillows and bag images come up as such - and just copy the image. Upload into Etsy. Way better than any screen shot.

I just tried - you can actually just right click on the image of the pillow, bag etc. on FAA and paste into PS/Paint then save it to use elsewhere.

Be careful! At first I thought to link from Etsy to my prints, but when I researched it, I discovered Etsy has a policy that disallows directing to sales at other places. In other words, you cannot link to another place to close the sales. That is not allowed. What Etsy artists are doing is making the sale through Etsy, having the other site, like FAA, complete the product and ship it to the artist, then the artist ships it to the Etsy customer. It's a long way around and I won't do it. The reason I say "be careful" is because if you do something against esty regulations, they will sometimes shut down the site with no notification and no recourse to the artist.

I sell FAA pillows on Etsy and do just what JC said... I screen grab and crop out square and rectangle versions of the pillows. I sell more FAA pillows through Etsy than I do directly on FAA... I think Etsy is a great place to sell home decor items.

Only thing is you have to play the middleman between Etsy and FAA meaning you have to order the FAA item and pay for it yourself (then collect your customer's money through Etsy). I'm really not sure what would happen if one of your Etsy customers wanted to return an FAA item - I'm assuming it would have to go back through you but I'm not sure.

This is kind of funny because just yesterday I spent 3 hours "print screen"ing and cropping and making a whole section for Decorative Throw Pillows on my Etsy. If you want to see how I did it you can check it out.

www.etsy.com/shop/JulieSenfArt

It's really quite simple, just time consuming. I made 2 listings with 5 pillow choices each.

Hopefully they won't close me down for it though?? What Karla says makes me a little nervous

Jane Linders

I have FAA pillows for sale on Etsy as well. But the Etsy image does not link to my FAA website. I'm definately the middle man between Etsy and FAA. If an Etsy customer bought a pillow through Etsy and then wanted to return it, then I would have to eat that cost, but so far, that hasn't happened. Sales have been rockin' on Etsy lately. Here? Not so much.

I print screen, crop in Picasa, add a white border to make up the pixel size and use that.

Heather Applegate

Karla - you can drop ship now.
She is fulfilling orders she gets on Etsy via FAA. Not directing people to her FAA page to complete the order.

Karla said, "The reason I say "be careful" is because if you do something against esty regulations, they will sometimes shut down the site with no notification and no recourse to the artist."

She is absolutely right. I closed my Etsy shop several years ago because a few sellers I knew had had their shops closed with no notice. I do not at all care for the way that site treats its artists.

print screen vs SnipIt? I have been using SnipIt and it seems it cuts or a few steps, like cropping. Have I got that wrong?

SnipIt is come with windows by the way.

Mike Breau

Floyd I think the snipping tool is for taking screen shots- that's how I use it. Wish I had taken one again lately because my screen just got messed up by another program-So much easier to correct it if you save screen shots of your computer every so often.. It's also great for troubleshooting, or saving previous settings in case you have to correct a problem elsewhere in programs, or you make changes in how you use a program and wish to remember the previous setting if the changes do not fit your desired results. Extremely useful tool..

Jane, did you go through all of the questions and answers that Etsy asks about who the "third party manufacturer" is ?

Dave Dilli

You need to sign up through ETSY to use FAA as an external manufacturer and wait for approval. After you have that approval, you can set up Etsy postings and have FAA distribute directly to your Etsy customer (drop ship). As long as you apply to use FAA as your external manufacturer you are following etsy's "rules" and should not be shut down.

I right click on the image of the product (like tote bags and pillows), and save as to my desktop. Then upload that image to Etsy - it is really easy.

Thanks for that Dave. I can not seem to locate the link for signing up as an external manaufacturer. can you be kind enough to post that here? I do not believe it would violate the rules but if so, can you direct message me? thanks.

Karla Beatty

Has anyone applied to Etsy with FAA as external manufacturer yet? I would like to know in advance if they would approve it or not. I don't get many sales on Etsy for prints, so it might be fun to try other products there. Julie Senf, your artwork is beautiful on the throw pillows.

Julie Senf

Thank you Karla! I was going to apply last night but ran out of time before I collapsed into bed. I am going to do it this morning and see what happens. I will let you know how it goes. I probably will have to remove my Throw Pillow options until I am approved even though I have already paid for those listings :(

*edit - I deactivated my throw pillow listings so the link above to my Etsy won't show you those options. Hopefully I will hear back from them soon!!

I applied last night. Takes a little time but probably worth the effort. Haven't had a response as of today. Waiting.

Thanks Abbie...I am currious as well...not sure how it would all work though...i thought you needed to load pricing in etsy....i'll wait for the list and then investigate futher...thank you

I filled out manufacturer's stuff early on so don't remember where that is on Etsy.

edit: Linda, it might be awhile before getting the approval.

Doesn't Etsy charge a fee per item shown to sell? If so, how would they charge if you are linking to FAA for all those shown there?

good point mary.. thats why im waiting for the list from abbie...( if you didnt hear, she is a tad under the weather... will give her plenty of time on this ,,, no rush)

Karla, I have been approved through Etsy with FAA as my third party manufacturer. They know of the process and it is working greatly. Just as Dave said I have been doing for some time. Definitely getting more sales than just through FAA alone.

Karla Beatty

Thanks Patricia! That helps a lot. I'm going to register FAA as my third party manufacturer and drop ship. That is what will work for me!

Toby McGuire

Etsy has been an awesome complement to FAA (and other manufacturers) for me this year. I've gotten lots of sales through them. I even sold a large framed print via Etsy and fulfilled it here. I only wish those sales also counted as sales here :).

Julie Senf

Toby, Patricia or any of you that are already set up with it...how long did they take to respond? Thought it would be a couple days to at least hear something but have not?

Dave Dilli

The link for the ETSY Outside Manufacturing Application is here.

https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/me/manufacturing/apply

It took them about 6 weeks to approve my AP - I was surprised it took so long, but it finally went through.

Hope this helps.

I want to do this too, but I am Canadian---I suppose that might make it more complicated? If anyone knows, clue me in. Thanks! Best wishes to Abbie.

Julie Senf

Dave, 6 weeks!!! Well I guess Christmas sales are out for the types of items I am trying to add through FAA. That is a very long time!

Melissa Bittinger

Anndraya, no...it wouldn't make any difference.

.....and to those talking about 'linking' your products here to Etsy....that's not how that works......that's not how any of this works, lol...(commercial reference)

You don't mention faa on your product listings, there is no linking back to faa. An etsy customer purchases a listing from your shop and then you can use faa to fulfill and dropship.

The fees are all on the site somewhere and they have discussion forums there too. It's .20 cents per listing for a four month period and a small fee (can't remember exact amount) like between 2.5-4% somewhere in that range when you sell the item. I'd consider it a completely different business model than here, although others might disagree...but I don't care...

Newwwman

thanks melissa, i am no longer interested in etsy as a platform to sell my framed wall decor products - the way you explain it, an etsy customer would pay more to buy an item than if they had bought it directly from me at my faa site. Ive already considered this distribution method when i did a little ebay research and testing. Its not fot me. Thanks all and good luck.

Patricia Lintner

Toby I agree I wish it could count as sales here too, but that's just the way it works.

Julie, it took a few weeks or so (did it quite a while back so not sure how long) to go through the approval with Etsy. There is a form you need to fill out. Also be sure to put in your own words working with FAA, as they want that.

The only mention of FAA on Etsy is on your about "about" page that says who your third party manufacturer is. There is absolutely no linking whatsoever to FAA.

Newwwman, you charge on Etsy what the customer would have paid if they purchased directly from FAA, unless you want to charge more. I am not sure where you are seeing it would cost them more. I charge exactly what they would pay here. I don't charge them the 4 month .20 fee which I easily make back.

Anndraya Blayer

Thanks, Melissa. You seem to know a lot-- I'm following what you say.

Anndraya Blayer

Melissa--then it would be best not to have an FAA watermark on your items when displaying with Etsy?

Ann Bridges

What size do the images need to be for Etsy?

Ann Powell

This has come up before in etsy discussions, but I still do not understand how people are dealing with returns. When I used to print and ship my own at etsy I would include a printed insert that they must inspect the item and notify me within a specific number of days for a return. If you are drop shipping there may be info from FAA about having 30 days to return. So then a customer would return it directly to FAA themselves? And they would pay the shipping cost to return it?. There would not be the etsy seller return address on the box to have them return to the etsy seller.

Dave Dilli

I have never had a return from Etsy, but I would just be the interface between the customer and FAA. I would get the RMA number and address from FAA, send that to the customer, tell them to send the photo to that address, and as soon as I have confirmation it was received by FAA, refund the money. I do not think it would be too difficult.

I'm going to do this in the New Year - my sales this year have been slow on etsy (I print myself). handmade at Amazon is going well - 5 sales so far this week.

Melissa Bittinger

Yes, I think it would be best to not have the faa watermark. Instead, make your own watermark and only upload small files sizes like here. Example 600 x 900 pixels.

As for returns, I haven't had one to date. You fill out your return policy and other stuff on etsy. What you decide is your policy is up to you. Feel free to give my shop some views, lol! Poke around, I don't care....at least pin something or favorite something though if you do!!!! www.paintedtulipstudio.etsy.com

Melisaa your shop looks lovely! I have a dormant etsy shop which I last used to sell some vintage photography books. Back when I did sell prints that I printed myself I did have one return, and had 2 returns last year here on FAA. If people are not having problems with it I guess I should try it out and submit the forms for FAA as manufacturer. Now the next question is how do you figure out the shipping costs???

Lisa Kaiser

I just tried to sign up with Etsy the other day, but I can't get a painting uploaded without stupid shipping questions that I have no idea how to answer. The Etsy site is so user unfriendly...actually a lot of them are. That's why I like fineartamerica best.

I'm glad some of you shared how to send them to fineartamerica. That's awesome advice. I wouldn't care or know if they shut my site down as I never visit it. It must have been one of the earlier versions of online selling.

I imagine one has to do just as much marketing and promoting to get noticed there among the thousands of other sellers offering similar items.

Karla Beatty

Shipping costs? I never want to deal with that, so I always plug in $0.00 on the shipping pages, basically include those projected costs into my prices and then say "Promotional FREE SHIPPING" in my descriptions section. It doesn't really mean anything, but it sounds good!

You can look at it like this. When your products and other peoples products are very similar design and in costs, you can compete for sales by reducing your shipping costs in comparison. For artworks, all of our prices and products are so varied that you don't need to compete over shipping costs. Something like that. I'm bad at finances and marketing.

After many years on Etsy, I am trying to do away with packaging and shipping myself. Hence I am starting with print on demand here at FAA. I like to travel and I am trying to automate as much things as I can so that I don't have to babysit websites constantly, nor "jump into action" whenever I get a sale.

With the way etsy has the system setup, setting s/h for separate sizes will only work if each size is a separate listing. If you did that, you can figure out s/h per country/destination. I think you have to know the size of the package or something?

I use the listing variations which has several size options in one listing so I've wrapped s/h costs into the set price for US destinations. I have info on my shop in a couple of places that I will ship overseas by custom order. Probably missing some overseas sales but that's life...

@Edward, I imagine one has to do just as much marketing and promoting to get noticed there among the thousands of other sellers offering similar items.
I have not found that to be true but everyone's experience is going to be somewhat different.

Thank you all, very much for sharing here, never knew half this stuff.

I have recently revived an old Etsy shop for certain FAA products, still needs a lot of work.

https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/StevieStevie

My Etsy shop gets more views than my FAA shop. Perhaps some of my products are just more suited to that platform. I'm going to develop that and see if I can turn those views into sales.

Just signed up to use FAA as my manufacturer/drop shipper as has been suggested.

Many thanks again, such helpful advice here.

Best wishes

Stevie

I have received permission from Etsy for Drop Shipping from FAA. Etsy makes sure that you post on each entry that FAA/Pixels is the manufacturer. I have not gotten any sales yet, so I cannot yet say how well it is working. I still struggle with marketing and getting people/customers to visit or look at my pages. Etsy was easy to work with on this.

A friend recently suggested Etsy as a possible venue for selling my products, so I've just read through the discussion again. What's the information that Abbie said we needed to give to Etsy? Does anyone else have it? I hate signing up for something I'm not familiar with because I always manage to screw it up somehow, but I'd like to give this a try. I'd just like to start out with all the info I'll need right from the start. I'm determined that this is the year I expand and Etsy sounds like a good place to start.
