Art Basel Miami Beach

As a Miami-based art brokerage maybe we're a little biased, but we're wildly excited about Art Basel and the surrounding fairs that will be in town next week. The city explodes with art events all over town so we were wondering, who is going and who is exhibiting their art? Have you ever been and if so, what are your thoughts on the shows and events? Do you have favorites?

Reed,

I get the Skates Reports. I read the major reports about Basel etc.....

My question to you is do artists creating inkjet prints show at Basel?

I would guess many of the photographers use inkjet.

And further are digital artists coming to center stage yet?

The avant garde is no longer avant garde. The digital world where I am is the cutting edge.

Bridburg, your response has nothing to do with what the OP asked.

Sean,

Not true. I have not been to Basel, but I am inquiring about it. I am discussing Basel.

I haven't been yet, I look forward to going. I can understand your excitement as a gallery owner as well as the artist, it's amazing to see a city come alive with art.

David, people may have different opinions as to what is cutting edge art.

Suzanne,

That of course is true. That does not mean everyone is right.

As I said I have not been to the show, but the pressure in our POD market is often involving inkjet printing
v one off canvasses. I realize Basel is far more than just canvasses. I know something about the show.

I asked my questions because I want to know more about the show.

Whether art is cutting edge or not has nothing to do with the medium. Besides, digital is a decades old medium now.

This is a golden opportunity for us to let the gallery owner who is graciously giving her time in this forum to lead the conversation. I hope we would not press her for answers to personal inquiries of our own art interests or what we think should be her interests without knowing something about the style and content of her gallery. It's something akin to asking a potential employer about a product they don't sell if it isn't an interest. I think she is waiting to hear from those who have visited Art Basil.

Hi guys!

Thanks for your interest in this discussion. David, I'm not quite certain what the market is with inkjet prints but there are several shows all over the city during Basel that focus on different types of works. For example, some of the tents focus on Latin American works while others include only emerging artists. I've seen digital works there and also seen absolutely amazing sculptures made from 3D printers. If it created by the human hands (or computers) you will see it during Basel week. As for myself personally, we specialize in Blue-Chip Artwork of 20th century Masters so the art we bring is of that genre and tends to be what we focus on. But there really is so much to see and one of my favorite tents during the show carries none of the above. I certainly welcome questions about Basel if I can answer them and would love to hear from people who have gone as well.

Good to hear with a personal interest in digital art that it is being shown at Art Basil! I think of Art Basil as including everything that is of any art significance as you explained with tents of art of every description. Sounds a little like heaven. It must be stimulating just going to work with the potential of art buyers walking through your doors in abundance all gathered together in one place. Do you feel an international presence in Miami even more now than in the past?

This is actually a good article I just read about the fairs that gives a nice overview...

And I forgot, speaking of digital art, we had interviewed artist Laurence Gartel for an article in Fisher Island Magazine (in Miami) this year. Here is a copy of the article, perhaps you'll find it interesting...

Reed,
I haven't been to the show personally but did send my art to be displayed digitally along with others, through another well known online site I won't mention because of the rules . I've heard so much about it, would love to visit it and show my Sikh Art some day!

David, I am confused.

All Giclee printers are inkjet and technically speaking when taking the literal definition of Giclee, all inkjets are Giclee. "from French giclée, from gicler "to squirt, spurt, spray.""

That is why the trade has been trying to get away from the term Giclee.

Giclees printing can be done on anything, paper, plastic, sheets, shower curtains etc, etc.

The trade is trying to go to a term that speaks more to high density then the average small injet. One of the standards that was being promoted was the number of ink jets, at least 8 or 10 vs 3-5. But then technology came along that actually did better, higher density than the 8 or 10 jet printers.

Because the trade has failed to really identify a term they all can agree on, Giclee remains the name. But some publishes are no longer using that term.

One of the largest and best publishes in the country tried to go to the term digital, suggesting that the high density file was as important and even more so than the printer itself. However that failed and they got tired of people asking them why they no longer do Giclees and went back to the term very quickly.

I will be showing a couple pieces at Spectrum during Art Basel . Did it last year also. Hopefully I will sell this year. I am glad to participate but I'm not sure of the value for photographers

David Bridburg

Floyd,

Giclee is like the term "fine art". Stuffy. Putting it nicely. I am just avoiding that. I have also months ago changed all my lit on SM to artists v fine artist.

Jon, The value to photographers and by extension digital artists is what I am getting at. It goes to how society defines original v prints. In large part.
I am glad Reed entered in that everything shows up at Basel, but value is still another factor.

Im planning on going but am torn between going to Art Basel or Art Miami which is also in town the same weekend,The drawback, and an important one is the less desirable location and showplace of Art Miami, The Convention Center is a much more ambient setting for a art show,,,just too bad the art doesn't sometimes fit the setting, I remember when Art Miami was at the convention center instead of Art Basel This show was Spectacular!!! and IMO far superior to Art Basel ! The entire show was covered with large beautiful paintings from old masters and contemporary artist from galleries around the world,..Now its covered with what I call "Weird Art"

Thank you Reed for those informative articles on Art Basel and Digital Art! All I can say is Thank You Mr.(s) Gartel and Warhol, you have opened up doors of opportunity and made the road of digital art a lot smoother! I am constantly surprised and impressed with Warhol and his vision. I have a lot to thank him for!

Sarabjit, best to you and your art at Basel!

Judy Kay, you are in an enviable position!

Hi Judy!
When was the last time you went to Basel? The Wynwood arts district (where Art Miami is) is now full of shows, restaurants and shops. We actually prefer that area for shows to the convention center where Basel is held. But let's be real, no one can argue with the beauty of Miami Beach, it's really unparalleled. Every year looks a little different because new exhibits keep cropping up but those two are the most robust fairs which will be our focus this year. Very excited!

Hi Suzanne!

Have you ever had a chance to go to the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh? We had a great time there and the collection was amazing but the diveristy in the exhibit was our favorite part. There is a floor dedicated to his movies and TV show, cases of trinkets he collected etc. We wrote an article about it for CBP Mag, I'll find it in a bit and attach the link. Warhol made a huge impact on the art world, we're big fans.

I went to Art Basel last year and for the past three years, Prior to that Art Miami was where Art Basel is now and believe me, there is no comparison, As far as the eye could see there were absolutely beautiful large canvas of modern, contemporary, abstract, traditional paintings from every gallery around the world, It was SPECTACULAR! Breathtaking really, One of my favorite galleries at the show then was the Hildegarde Gallery from NY, They had some works from Valery Tsarkowsky Not sure of the spelling TSAR) just as example, I would give anything if they would return to that Venue! The show is exciting inspite sometimes of the art being displayed!
The setting is just so perfect though, Carpeted throughout and a perfect ambient setting, Art Miami's show at Wynwood just doesn't compare in terms of overall environment. I get free passes to Art Miami but opt instead to go to Art Basel instead, I have not been to the Warhol Museum, but when I lived in Germany was able to go to some of the major galleries there,
Im pretty sure I know why they opt now for the Art Basel theme, It is more affordable. The show that I was referring to was just too rich ,,,Works from the masters and most famous contemporary artists dominated the show, Rembrandt, picasso, and every major master artist imaginable. While it was beautiful to look at I guess it didn't bring a lot of revenue!

Reed, If this is his personal museum I have never been but looked on line, if not it certainly needs my study! I have become aware of Warhol in the last year since my digital art has matured. I am fascinated with him because he is a front runner. Even though he is not with us he keeps on showing up in innovative art movements!

Thank you for your sensitivity and information to help us as artists. You have added a lot of value to your post which makes you and your gallery memorable. You obviously have a passion for art.

Could it be Art Basel's vision is to get on the ground floor of new innovative artists that are more affordable and has ended up being very successful? In shows like this there would also be some strangeness and oddity in the art. I would think in time it will become the old art establishment or some of the art being shown currently. I would love to see the old masters and established modern artists at the same time Art Basel intrigues me with the new artists and their techniques. I will admit here at FAA the abstract artists hooked me and because of the exposure I love it now!

I just found a link to Art Miami when it was at convention center, It was in 2005 ,,,This show was there for about 7 to 8 years before it transitioned into Art Basel, Here is a link and you can see the different galleries and take a virtual tour of what they offered, I would love to find the Hildegarde gallery from NY,,,Her offerings were unsurpassed,

Wish it would return!

Art Basel sounds like the art world is at it's feet! One could probably get recognition just selling on the street! Now that I know Reed Horth is pretty relaxed about all of this I would say I'd love to go down there take some abstract art with me and do the same!

Check out this link from my Flickr account of some photos I took at Art Basel yesterday, The show was fantastic. My favorite galleries were Thomas Galleria, Landau and Hammer Gallery!

Completely agree! At Landau, great Le Cobusier paintings and the pair DuBuffet were really impressive. Loved the small Picasso with the blue/ green background behind their desk. The exhibit at Hammer Gallery of the Picasso/Matisse retrospective was my favorite at the show, hands down. It was reminiscent of the 2003 MoMA exhibit of the two 20th century greats. And the owner of Thomas is one of my favorite gallerists, she is lovely and we have known her for years. They always have wonderful works.
