Copyrights From Old Paintings

I just noticed that a lot of Members sell Photographs from old Paintings from great Masters, is this not a violation of the copyrights?

Copyrights don't last forever.

The artist has the copyright, not the owner. In most countries this ends 70 years after his demise.
I think that is the main reason why museums do not allow taking photographs - they can not do too much against selling this photos.

A lot of old Master's work is in the Public Domain now.

Many great master's works are in the Public Domain and can be sold, or altered and sold, by anyone.

There are still some very early great artists and photographers whose work has had the copyright renewed or it never expired, so it's best to be absolutely certain before you start selling or editing.
