Hiya guys,
My brother Gary finally had enough and passed away tonight at twenty minutes to Eight. He has suffered for 32 years from complications from his cancer operation. My brothers and I can't believe that he lived as long as he did because of all the pain and suffering he has experienced. He holds some sort of record at Johns Hopkins Hospital for being the man who had the most kidney stones removed in one day - over 150. He suffered from kidney stones for over 30 years. They were a result of the very heavy pain killers the doctors had him on. Although Gary had a very bad time of it, every time he came out of the hospital he would be laughing and telling jokes. His wife, son and daughter will miss him very much. I will be leaving for Baltimore tomorrow and won't be around for about a week. I have to be back by the weekend because my Grandchildren's Baptism is Sunday.

My condolences. My father fought cancer for 34 years before it took him. My father as well never lost his humor, even at his lowest points (he stuck his tongue out at the doctor when he told us there was no more they could do for him).

I'm so sorry to hear this, it must be a great loss to no longer have him in your life. I'm glad he was able to laugh, that's a gift to us all, showing us how not to let very bad situations overwhelm us, by keeping a sense of humor.

Hiya guys,
Thank you so very much for your very kind remarks and condolences. I only wish I could tell you some happy things about my trip to Baltimore but it wasn't a happy time. I did manage to cry in my car when I was traveling to Baltimore so I could manage to get most of it out of my system but at the gravesite, when they played taps, we all seemed to break down. My brother Gary had been in the Army.
At the funeral parlor I met some very old friends that I hadn't seen in over 50 years. My old friend, Warren Klug, showed up there and I nearly cried when I saw him. He and I were in the same art class in High School. He brought back some happy memories and some sad ones too. Warren's daughter-in-law, Maria, was with her 9 month old daughter aboard TWA flight 840 when terrorists exploded a grenade. The explosion tore Maria and her daughter right through the hole in the plane killing them. http://www.nytimes.com/1986/04/05/world/terror-s-victims-3-generaions-of-a-family.html
The last time I had seen my buddy was when I drove to Baltimore to search for him and tell him how sorry I was. It had been years since we both went to High School and I hardly recognized him but when I saw him at my brother Gary's funeral, I didn't recognize him at all. Except for an etched sadness in his eyes when he talked about it, his eyes hadn't changed. He was just one of many friends my brothers and I had met when we were young men. Besides my sister who is in a nursing home with an advanced case of dementia, there are 3 of us left, Ronnie, Lyle and me. It's very sad that you don't realize how important family is until you get old and they start passing away.
On a happier note, I was very pleased to see my nephews and nieces had brought their children to the viewing Thursday night and it gave me a chance to see that the Shull clan was still growing. Those little guys are so beautiful and so full of life. That brings me to the end of this little story - or the beginning, depending how you look at it - my grandchildren are being Baptized tomorrow and I am very tired and have to get to bed. Thanks again everybody.
