photo editing software

Robert, sometimes when I'm editing and having a particularly difficult time with something and I try a "series" of filters and changes, I'll write down immediately what I did so I can do it on the other versions. I know what you mean, I've gotten a good effect on something in the past, and can't remember how I got it and can't duplicate it. So when I get to step 3 on something and realize it might eventually work, I start writing down what I did.

Unless you got a result by accident.....I can relate to that as well.

you make custom key strokes and just memorize them. my hand knows them better than i could instruct.

left click is usually action. right click is usually commands. and on my mouse i have 5 other buttons that do stuff.

"..hitting both keys at the same time?"

The "Big finger - Little key" syndrome.

The worst thing is when you change some option and can figure out how to change it back again. I wonder if anyone had ever calculated how many different windows and options are in Photoshop. Must be in the billions.

Edward, I'm working in Elements 13 and I upgraded from 9, so trying to do the same things in the newer version was driving me crazy. When I make a photo collage, I generally like a dark background on the base layer or blank portion and unless you put a thin border around the other images, the dark fill bleeds into the photo. It took me two whole days to figure out why that "border" thing was grayed out....you have to simplify the layer first. And yes, it drives me crazy and I don't even do a lot of the advanced stuff in there other people do.

On the brighter side - I did print out the entire manual at work and I have it in a binder, but sometimes you don't even know how to look up what you want to do.

I'm about to start using photoshop for the first time......

Any short cuts or tips I should know?

Mary Bedy

Wow, Abbie, there's so much in there - and I don't even have the professional version - my advice is to start playing with it and ask a lot of questions here. When I get stuck trying to find a feature or function I know it must have, I just pop in here and immediately get the answer.

Haha yes, I did try it once before.... Once only, it confused the hell out of me, I Did one thing rather like Robert's top post, got annoyed and deleted the photoshop. I know exactly what he means

It's a wonderful program once you find your way around the basics. But like I stated in a post above, I don't use a lot of the really advanced stuff. It does take some getting used to. I would look on line and download the PDF manual for whatever version you are working in. That's much better than the "help" that you click on in the program itself. If you don't use the exact terminology that Abode used for the function you're looking for, you can't find it. At least if you download the manual, you can scan it although it's like 300 pages.

i bought the corel paintshop at one third the price but while it mite do pretty much the same thing, the " user community" is much smaller than adobe.. i will likely switch to the ps monthly subscription soon ( as soon as i master the corel) :(

Tip - don't let your teenager use your Photoshop.

Actually be bet there is a way to set user preferences. I've been using Photoshop for more than 10 years and there is always something to learn and discover.

Robert Elements is less than 100 bucks and then you own it. It does MOST of the stuff the professional version does. Just a thought. I couldn't get myself to spend 9.95 a month for the professional version when there are tons of stuff in there I will never use. At least I own it forever....I don't have to worry about monthly fees for it. I think if I keep up with the updates, they are cheaper as well. I had to spend 89 bucks for 13 because I had skipped versions 10-13.

Just a personal preference.....my son does the monthly subscription thing. He likes it that way.

Hi Abbie,...try this

Use google or YouTubto do a search for "beginning photoshop technique" videos,...there are many sites that will walk you thru the basics and you can follow along easily at your own pace.

I've been using photoshop since Version 2.5,...and often use YouTube when facing new challenges or I've forgotten the basics due to lack of use.

This will shorten your learning curve considerably.

I've been a member of NAPP ( Natn'l Association of Photopshop Professionals),...(now called "kelbyone",...membership includes Photoshop User Magazine as well as more training aids than you'll ever need.

As you learn, concentrate on what you are learning and do not fret about the vast size of the program,....like other softwares,...you will never know or use the entire program.

Good luck and have fun.

Marty

I agree on Corel Paintshop Pro. Much cheaper and far more user friendly. I did what you did, Abbie. I threw up my hands at Photoshop and deleted it. I even have Elements, but I gave up on that, too. There are some here who sell regularly who use Corel Paintshop for photo editing.

Thanks guys... I actually had a site teaching paint shop pro 8-9

However they changed it so abominably when Corel bought it that I just couldn't use it now....too much like photoshop. I taught every aspect of it when Jasc owned it and just cannot understand why they changed it.

you might need a better mouse. some are garbage.

as for photoshop. its like saying - i just became alive, are there any tips?

i'd start with the basics of whatever is your trying to do

youtube is your friend here, learn it in small pieces. have a goal - learn to cut something out with a lasso, a pen, and things like that. each thing has its own methods of using it.

Fav photoshop feature: Actions

Not necessarily unique to photoshop, but in photoshop you can create and use "Actions" as big time savers when you need to apply the same (or a similar) set of photoshop functions to multiple images.

You can record and save a series of steps taken in photoshop - could be a just a few or dozens - and, once recorded, they can be applied in the future with a single click.

Huge time saver when:

- Applying the same post processing adjustments to a series of images shot under the same conditions/settings

- Applying a complex effect consistently across multiple images so that they can become a family/collection of like digital art

- Resizing/Downsizing/Cropping a group of images in the same exact way

- Essentially, any time you want to perform the same set of commands consistently across multiple images

And, for maximum flexibility, you can set Actions up so that certain steps within the action can be adjusted exactly to your liking while the entire action is being applied - like adjusting the opacity of a layer or fading the application of a filter.

Best of all, you can batch apply an action to groups of images in one fell swoop. Say you wanted to apply a faded watermark in the exact same place while resizing images to screen resolution. You can record how you want it done once and then have the exact procedure repeated on any number of other images in your port - all at once.

Abbie, being a loooooooooong time user of PSP and owner of CS6, I can definitely feel your Jasc/Corel pain. I have never seen Corel fail to destroy any software they got their hands on. That being said, the newer versions of PSP are a big improvement over when Corel first took over, and I still think it's closer to any version of PSP than to CS6. Just stay on the Edit screen and everything will be familiar.

Abbie Shores

Ah, all that Shawn just mentioned, I could do with psp when I used that, so it may well be worth looking back at psp if it's more like it used to be. You get used to something don't you
