And will TRY his technique in the next few days and see how it comes out!

Way to go Rich, now I'm really curious what he does to inspire everyone! Think I will Google him.

Suzanne,

German with subtitles, but he is very inspiring and his technique is VERY interesting. I found the trailer!

He uses these giant "paddles/scrappers" and that's what I'll try in the next few days,

I tried it (smaller scale). Used a 8 x 8 canvas with a wallpaper knife.

Edward,

Did you like the results? I've got a 12" drywall joint compound knife that I'll try, other wise, I'll, make something and I will start with a much smaller canvas and just the paint that I have laying around, from all the years doing handy manly stuff,

Rich

8" x 8" or foot? I'll probably use some gallery wrapped stuff I have, 26x40"

Thank you for this resource, Rich. I've put it in my Netflix cue.

Inch. You can then photograph it and print it large. It was ok. If I had the name brand recognition and art marketing network like Gerhard Richter I'd sell it and pay off the mortgage.

Edward,

"If I had the name brand recognition and art marketing network like Gerhard Richter", then you wouldn't be here........

Robert,

Yes, I have the old fogey way of watching DVD's, from the mail! I get 2 at a time and I think it's $17/month or so. Streaming is another fee and I had it, but never used it, since the library is very limited, compared to the hard copies available.

If you like painting and then if you like abstracts, you'll love this movie!

Joel,

Glad to pass this on! As I mentioned, I'm gonna try this out, by using whatever paint I've got leftover from projects here and there. In the movie, he covers up some beautiful works, which I just loved and then completely changed them into something else, which I didn't love,

Thanks Rich,

Today, its like 15 family members sharing one account so its like 50 cents a month to get everything netflix has streaming....but I have seen everything i am interested in..so now im left to the new releases..which are fairly lame.... so unitl the new seasons come out for blacklist, or house of cards, persons of interest or major crimes, there is not much there for me. I would not pay 10 bucks a month on my own to stream what they have

I love the guy's house and studio set up. Not to mention the staff that prepares his oils and squeegee.

Robert,

Here's my recipe: I watch at least one documentary each week, and then 2 feature films on Friday/Sat., so that's 12/month for $17 and sometimes I see more. I don't get much TV stuff, since I'll DVR anything I like.

I've got the Chinese Painter and activist, Al Weiwei next here and then whatever comes on Friday.

A lot of good stuff AND I get HBO, which produces really great movies and Doc's. Award winning stuff! Here's one from a week ago, about the famous photographer, Juliano Salgado and his work with the environment, in addition to his photography,

Salt of the Earth was a Dartmouth last weekend but I missed it. I'll have to get it on DVD.

Edward,

I KNOW! Fantastic work space and top notch assistants, but pretty sure, he can afford that stuff......LOL! Loved his home and the sounds of song birds everywhere!

What surprised me, was the lack of music in his space. when I had my big studios, the first purchase, was always the sound equipment! When the plac was jumping, I would have "Romanza" blasting(no clients in the building)........

Richter thinks that the amount of money people pay for his art is absurd.

I would be interested in watching this movie. I'm surprised so many people pay for netflix still. I am soon cancelling. Kodi is out now, which is basically free netflix. If anyone wants to learn more, feel free to PM me. :)

Amazon has drawn a line in the sand on piracy by banning the popular Kodi media player from its app store. While Kodi does not provide illegal copyrighted material, they do provide add-ons, such as Phoenix and Genesis, which enable the pulling in of copyrighted movies TV shows and illegal dvd's for extremely easy access.- not to turn this thread into another copyright discussion...but kodi is a device to avoid paying for Art. Once I started putting my stuff up on FAA, I stopped stealing the copyrighted material of others. I think anyone trying to sell their copyrighted material should really consider what they are doing, if, on the other hand, they are stealing someone elses art.

PS - my understadning is that NETFLIX does allow up to 15 people to share the same username and password. I think that is stupid. But since they do, I will piggyback on an account and get NETFLIX 24/7 for free.

Rich Franco

Sarah,

I have friends that use a few different devices to get their music and video, for free, but since they ALL are a bit "fuzzy" when it comes to what's right and what's being stolen, just not for me. All Artists need to stick together on copyrighted material, whether music or Art and for me, not worth the chance, that some stuff might be "borrowed".

Robert,

Not sure about Netflix, but I've been with them for many years now and they seem to be a good company and good support. When I get a bad DVD and it will happen less now than a few years ago, they take care of it and then send another, extra, free of charge for the inconvenience. So lately, I''ve been getting 3/week!

Kodi is legal. I know ppl in the tv industry and have also been told that streaming is legal by them. Thank you , though
It is something to take into consideration. I do think our actors are still payed millions an episode, and can also be supported by buying their dvds etc. Catching up on a missed show, online instead of recording it, should be ok.

Well, finally got organized! Here is the first "attempt" of painting, trying Gerhard Richter's technique, somewhat.....These paints were what I had laying around from handy manly projects and came out ok! I'll get some "NEW" paint soon and try another and make that next one more Richter-ish!

Art Prints

Here's the one that I ran through Topaz and I like a LOT!

Sell Art Online

I got a piece of "lauan" plywood, that is 2' x 4', for just under $6, as the "canvas". Will try this again, before getting some real canvas or might take one of my old Gallery Wraps, 26"x40" and try that too.

Let's see some others!!!

Rich

Here we go! As promised, I said that today, I would try and make a more "Richter-ish" painting and I think I did just that! Pretty happy with the results.

The first one, mostly white, with some Black,Red and Yellow, titled: "Red Chair" was the foundation for the final painting and you can see the lines if you look for it. The third example, is the "Topaz" version, which I also like.

Let me know what you think

I've tried his technique for fun. But strangely enough, even though I paint both abstracts and non-objective work, his methods and work do not capture me and hold me interested. However, I find Richter himself to be a fascinating guy and will enjoy seeing the movie. Thanks for sharing it

I like what you did, Rich! I looked at the trailer but not the entire documentary, because I don't want a "free trial" of Netflix. Oh, I love Netflix, but I don't need it now. When I lived out in the sticks, I used the snail-mail Netflix program to rent dvds and really loved that.

What I really like about what I saw on the trailer was his use of that huge squeegee thing. I don't care for art that is in your face, and by him swiping this over the paint, the underlayer shows through, making it more subtle and interesting. That is right up my alley!

Last night I happened to catch a new show on Ovation, called "Art-Breakers." Has anyone seen that? If you can get past the bimbos who are the moderators, it does give a glimpse into how art is bought for high-end clients and what they look for.

Great stuff on your site!

You'll enjoy this DVD, as a painter!

Patricia, really great movie for any artists and watching him, sometimes "change" a painting over and over again and wanting to tell him STOP!, I'll take that, JUST LIKE IT IS!!!

Hello to All!

Here is my newest attempt at painting and more like a painting than the abstracts I've done. This is large, 32x48 and already hanging over my sofa in the family room! I like this and may try another. I would like to try and learn how to paint clouds next. I have another abstract that I'm working on, right now, but not too crazy about it yet, so may or may not show up here. I'm still using left over house paint, from my collection and about 15 gallons taken from the dumpster up the street, a few months ago, for my deck renovation that I did.

Hope you enjoy! This is number 5 of my paintings, not counting the abstract that is waiting out in the "studio"(garage)!!!

Thanks Rich... I have Netflix and will check it out.

Also for any authors, or would-be writers....Netflix has a really great movie entitled " Magic of Belle Isle "

Morgan Freeman does an excellent portrayal of a temporarily down-and-out author of western novels. A 9 year-old girl next door in a resort town, inspires him to return to his old manual typewriter as well as give him a new outlook on life.

A very pleasant movie that I highly recommend.

Rich..very nice work on your painting! Do a search on YouTube for Bob Ross and he will show you how to paint clouds, trees, mountains and much more in his many videos that are available for free.

Rich Franco

Mel,

Thanks! I think I saw that movie, if Morgan plays a next door neighbor and does a bit of drinking? Don't remember if it was a Western setting though. Good movie indeed. I actually photographed Bob Ross, many years ago for RollingStone magazine. He lived here in Orlando, very sweet guy and just like his on camera personality.

Also just watched the one where he, Morgan is married to Diane Keaton, in NYC and he's a painter: http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/5-Flights-Up/80017171?trkid=190393

Will look into YouTube about the clouds!

Rich, I really-really-really like that painting from what I can see on my phone. Will have to take a better look later. House paint, really?? I only have semi gloss in my garage! I am surprised you got paint out of a dumpster. I hope that was headed to a designated toxic disposable site and not the garbage.

Okay, so my question is ... what kind of paint did you use, flat? Maybe it doesn't matter.

Rich Franco

Patricia,

No, up the street, they were "flipping" a house and they had a huge dumpster outside and ALL the paint was tossed into the dumpster and most gallon cans were almost full! Some exterior and some interior, semi-gloss and flat. I originally went up there to "recycle" a bunch of 2x6x16 foot pressure treated wood that they had ripped off the back and THAT wood in the dumpster was much better than what was on my old deck! I'll post a few photos when I get back. Running up to Home Depot for some blue paint, for my cloud lesson!!!
