I know, because you are you. Here is the thing, there are often threads that bag on abstract painters or photographers or realist or whomever. If you view photography or abstraction to be so easy and so profitable why is that not you? If realism just takes the ability to brainlessly copy why don't you do that? Every style and approach has it's challenges, if you think it is easy or brainless I am guessing you are missing it. My son plays the drums some other musicians have made comments to him about that being easy and not a real instrument, they are clueless of what is involved.

No one can know what it is like in another person's shoes or in another person's mind so judgement is often unkind to say the least.

For 35 years I was a working television director and when people asked, "What do you do?" I would tell them I was a television director.
They would look at me blankly for a moment and then change the subject.
I understand.

My son and his father are both fabulous drummers (his father in a band). I totally get that.

"Why Are You Not Someone Else?"
Because i choose not to be...
When one trys to diminish what someone else does, they do it at their own expense.

Drummers always take the heat because they are often easily replaceable.
I know some drummers that would blow your mind as they tear up a 30 piece set.
There's an inside joke that bassists are just wannabe guitarists who couldn't quite muster it.
I know some bassists who can thump it like a madman.
I like writing songs and so I taught myself guitar. I never got to where I can melt your face off with a spine-tingling solo, but I'm alright. I'm more of a rhythm guy.
I pursued the guitar because I view it as the most intricate instrument (next to the piano).
That's also what I'm hoping to pursue in my art, except that it comes much more naturally to me than music does.
I know that when I first started my art pursuit last year, I held many prejudices and insecurities.
I'm finding that those are rapidly fading as I come to appreciate the many different techniques that I encounter.
At some point, I hope to see many of these different aspects meld together in my own work.
The fact is, some things are harder than others.
I tend to look for the most technically demanding path, and then see if I can get a hold of it.
That's just the way I roll.

Hi... my first post :) I dabble in everything (master of none!).
Photography isn't easy - you have to have the right light, the right composition, you can't always arrange things how you'd like them, and time, patience and skill.
Painting isn't easy at all, not for me anyway, but you can choose your light, composition and move a tree six inches to the left, you still have to have time, patience and skill.
Digital patterns and drawing are easy - not necessarily, you have to learn software, and you still have to have composition or at least a balance of colours, and time, patience and skill.
Digital realism is beyond my capacity for time and learning.
My hat is off to anyone who does anything well, even if it's not my bag.

Then who would be me? LOL
I dislike seeing the ragging on others threads....I tend to be sarcastic in those just to mess with the ones starting the hating.
I've done realism (have a few in my portfolio from art school), pottery, sculpture, abstract, modern, pop art, collage, fantasy, surrealism, watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, mud pies, ink drawings, charcoal, photography, stick houses and the list goes on.
I am who I am and I do what I want to do and believe others should do the same.

I used to be someone else. About 90% of who I am today is almost 180 degrees of who I was when I was younger. I was the most naive, socially awkward and paranoid person that I have met. Knowing where you came from helps to be not so critical of others but also not afraid to engage the un-informed, un-educated, and willfully ignorant.

Me? I am thankful. I'm thankful for the creativity that I was given and thankful for the wonderful and diversely mixed artists friends in my life. I've been fortunate to have such open minded and encouraging people in my personal life. We give advice when asked but also know that everyone has their own style and embrace everyone's. We're our own worst critic anyway.

"Drummers always take the heat because they are often easily replaceable."
People who are really good at what they do make it look easy, yes?
Drummers are only 'easily replaceable' in bands that aren't very good. If you have a killer band you can't throw in a mediocre drummer and expect it to still work.
"I know some drummers that would blow your mind as they tear up a 30 piece set."
Big gear is primarily for stage presence. Are they as impressive on a four-piece kit?
People who downplay accepted brilliance in others are simply insecure with their own abilities.

Yes, Dan. They are equally impressive, and bored, on a 4 piece set.
But I will agree that the best artists can make magic with minimal materials.
That's much of what attracts me to the simplicity of a pencil and paper.

'If you have a killer band you can't throw in a mediocre drummer and expect it to still work."
My son's planning to learn percussion this year as an extracurricular activity. Band class at school last year was a total waste (in his opinion) because the percussion section stunk so badly, they ruined it for everyone else. He is a good musician, it really frustrated him. He sees a need for competence...

Maybe the question ought to be "Who would you rather be?" And then of course "Why?" Who would jettison their current life to be someone else?

Someone who doesn't like their current life.

I suffered for years not being an artist.
After a short while as an artist the existential world became a happier and happier place.
I no longer argue with who I am.
My journey began with my self imposed idea of doing something very different after art school.
I knew at that time what I wanted to develop, but had no clue where that would lead. Others have long
gone before me, but mainly with humorous artwork. I am a product of my times, but what is cutting edge today?
Avant Garde work or digital art? I will say it, it is not longer avant garde to be avant garde.
Marrying the past with the future creates the present.
A large part of my joy today is in being my own boss. I no longer have someone to pain me with their follies.
Would I want to be me and not be an artist? In a few words......not by half.....

Remind me of the TV Show , "do you think you can dance?" what those dances could do I would never want to try. As for artists the toughest skill to master is to make your art looks easy or effortless.

I am myself because
a. being myself is all that I am good at being
b. if I try to be somebody else, that tends to result in frustration and failure.
c. Being myself isn't as bad as you might think.

If you don't want to be yourself, change yourself.
People are like glass lightbulbs, they're fragile, it's best to change them carefully, and after they've cooled down.

Why Are You Not Someone Else---what if you have been?
or someone's been you?
I had my identity stolen...ten years ago. It's kind of interest watching the person who claims to be you....do something, you would never do.
It would have been even weirder if she looked like me....
I am who I am...

Ronald, you again, hit a homerun to the hearts of every hard working performer.
I always hate it when I hear people saying someone doesn't deserve it or worse when someone grumbles about their lack of sales.
I'm me because in past lives I raped, pillaged, murdered, liked only myself and I have lessons to learn in the here and now about how to care, share, be loved and how to love others.
My art is not entirely a representation of my philosophy.

Ringo Starr just released a new photography book. It features lots of photos of The Beatles, and its hook is that they're photos of The Beatles you've never seen before.
(Personally I've seen more than enough for a lifetime)
When he was drumming for them the songs usually called for minimalist backbeats, not demanding in any way other than needing to keep time like a machine - which he did.
But when they weren't practicing / performing he would take thousands of photos of them
If he'd been a paparazzi at the time he could have really cleaned up

Well, there are a few up here who have met me in real life, so I guess they could say. Or maybe not.
