Question About Noise??

Ok so I am not sure if I am noise sensitive or not, I know I don't like it.
So my question, when I look at this photo in photoshop enlarged to 100% it looks fine noise wise, but when I look at it with the loop on FAA it looks noisey, is this image noisey, will it print?

i see fine noise and i see some magenta noise in the shadows near the mountain in the sky. i would clean the noise in the sky only. its the only place they can look. its just to make sure it won't fail later on if your on a trip or something.

I'm beginning to think any image will print. I've been reading the reviews on a daily basis and have seen quite a few printed that most here in the forum said wouldn't print. Blurry, noisy, ugly watermarks with fonts we're not supposed to use, bad cropping. Some customers wanted to return, and some seemed quite happy with their purchase.

Thanks Mike!!!
I read a thread where you suggested using NOISE>MEDIAN, in layers then masking in the sky, would you suggest using the same here?
Thanks again.

I see some noise in the sky but I think it would print as is

i always use median, usually pretty high and smooth it over using a black mask so i can what its doing. you want to go over the clouds lightly or you'll get square clouds

TL,

I think this looks pretty good, just see some stuff going on in the clouds, above that small cloud in the valley, chromatic aberration.

What was the ISO on this shot. Last resort, loose the last or 2 last largest sizes,

Thanks for asking, it was shot at ISO 400, I don't like going that high but I was with two of my sons, elk hunting, and I didn't want to carry my tripod with all of the other junk that needed carrying ;-), if I had it to do over again I would have taken the tripod, but then there was a lite wind so that wouldn't have worked either...I guess 400 was the correct choice.

I am going to have one printed locally and see what it looks like, I have done what Mike suggested, I like the way it looks so I guess I will find out.

Thanks to those who posted!!!

I have seen photographs with noise and have been printed. It is hard to know which or won't be printed. I say, try to correct the noise to as much as possible and see what happens, what do you have to lose?

Thanks Diana, that's what I was thinking, I have fixed the noise in the sky, and clouds, so we will see.

If you look at the pine forest on the far mountain, just below Timp, the large mountain in the back ground, anyway you will see there are dead pines in there, the result of our western pine beetle. It doesn't get cold enough in the winter to kill them, so they are killing the forests here in Utah, it won't be long until we have no pine forests left here in the west. We used to have beautiful pine forests to the east of Heber Utah, now they are mostly dead pines, very few living trees there now, shame!!

Thanks again

TL,

Just get a "cropped" area printed, BIG, like an 8x10 or 11x14 of the 40x60 and then view it, at the correct distance, no need to get a full image printed, for a test.

Hi Sharon:
"I'm beginning to think any image will print."

Not all images will print. I have personal experience with images not printing.

Cheryl,

Me TOO! One of my first prints sold, was 40 x 60", and not my best image, but I did fix it and the sale went through!

I fixed the image, too, and the sale went through... more luck than skill, on my part.

I'm not glad you had issues with your work not printing -- that's always frustrating and stressful -- but it does make me feel a tiny bit better that someone who is as skillful with photography as you are can have problems with getting printable images, too.

I may be mistaken, but I think you should reduce the sharpening on this image. To me I think I see artifacts from over sharpening - which accentuates the small amount of noise that is present. Of course not having seen the un-sharpened image I cannot tell for sure.

Dave can you tell me what you are seeing? I don't do sharpening, just what lightroom does as default.

Edited to add: Ok I went in and cut down lightroom's default sharpening, I do think I like it a little better, as Rich hinted, at viewing distance it should be just fine.

Rich as for printing the whole image I am confident :-D that it will print fine.

I have another image shot with a different camera, one that I was not all that impressed with image wise, I printed an 8' image and it sold right away for me, I think this will be fine, I was just worried about the noise in the sky, I think I have that taken care of now.

For me I see a texture in the darker portions of the mountains in the midground - just behind the aspen in front. It is a pattern that I tend to get when I sharpen too much. However if you just used the default for Lightroom sharpening then that is probably not it.

Many of the world´s most iconic photographs would never be printed by POD, or get accepted by stock agencies because of quality issues ...

Looks fine to me at this point. Maybe limit it to 48 instead of 60 if you are worried.
