I am not in many groups but if you put in the search field on FB photography groups" it will bring up suggested groups, Here is a link to one I joined https://www.facebook.com/groups/V7NPhotography/ I Love Photography" is the name of the group in case the link doesn't work
Also in the FAA search discussions area just put in "Facebook art groups or Facebook photography groups, It will bring up a list of posts by members of different groups to join!

chances are if your in a photography group - your not spreading anything. because other people are there that do the same thing.

Not sure why you want to join a photography group for selling purposes. People who buy photography are those who can't do it themselves.

Now I am really confused - having read Floyd Snyders blog posts about promotion he said that I should join Facebook groups. Now you are saying that I shouldnt. Is Facebook worth the effort to generate sales? If not then which social network platform is?

Facebook Photo groups? There are so many to choose from and some are very active and national or international even and some are local. One i belong to is based in a community not far from where i am and is quite small, and i actually have shot with almost half of the active members. In contrast i would not want to guess how many members a Nikon photographers group has.
Also there are specialized groups such as black and white photography or portraits or bird photographers to list just a few.
I think the groups are great, they can be supportive and help a person learn and they can be places to showcase images and even have them critiqued. I am not really sure what you want when you say your promotional reach - does that mean 'clients' and sales?
The groups offer various things to members. For me I find some groups fit better than others.

using photo groups is like posting in these forums. you won't get that effect. he claims he uses garage sale pages, but i can't imagine how since its a local thing, and i can't see how its not seen as spam.

technically facebook isnt' a great place to advertise too based on how its set up. and spamming groups i don't think is a great way to keep your account there. best to ask him what he does exactly, including wording, because a lot of what i've seen is rather vague.

photo groups are were you talk about cameras and stuff.

By promotional reach I mean that I would like to get my work seen by more people in the aim of selling it.

Most photography groups on FB want you to upload actual photos and not push the fact that they are for sale by posting your website link instead. The moderators consider that spam.

More people may see things posted in photography groups on Facebook but if its all photographers with the same goal to sell, then its probably like Eskimos trying to sell ice to each other. If you can find topical groups related to your subjects you may be able to show off some work there to potential buyers if you ease in and don't just start posting things for sale.

you have to focus attention the types of people interested in your type of work. casting a hook blindly before looking to see if its in water, won't get you that far. thing is about advertising, from what i can see on the attitude on facebook, you have to be a part of the group before mentioning you sell things. you can't just slip into the side entrance toss your banners out and run out again. they will mark you as a spammer.

instead you would have to know something about the subject then slip in and just like here, become a part of their community, then let it slip you sell things like that as art. but that kind of relationship would take time and you can't fake it either. like i'd like to join different groups, but i can't just advertise just like that. its no different then the rogue spammers that hit us for viagra, or what have you. you'll need to find them on twitter or the like.

i don't go the facebook way because there is no promise of a sale, and you really have to spend a lot of time there in order to get people to know you or to create a following.

Stewart if you have a photography page you may want to BOOST a post. You can target the audience you want and it costs very little to do so.

I have to agree with you Mike - my work is so varied I would have to join loads of groups and talk about subject matter that I am not entirely interested in from a community perspective. I have Twitter, Pinterest and google left.

Jessica's suggestion seems the most practical way of promoting on FB. As others have said, personal FB pages are not a good way to sell, plus the FB folks frown on it. They want you to create a business FB page for promotion and sales.

I have a business/fan page that has 395 'likes' but the algorithm that facebook employs ensures that your posts do not get seen by everyone? I find this very frustrating, I keep hoping that someone would setup a website in direct competition to Facebook without this algorithm in place.

you also have blogs, make a webpage, comment on other blogs and sign your name and link like i do with each of these. join forums you do like just make sure there is a sig line at the bottom. post unique work meant for certain types of people, use hashtags on these social sites. and so on. its an on going thing.

I am surprised about the algorithm deal. I thought FB offered you a choice as to who can view your posts, the general public or a more specific group of people.

Here is one of the threads where Floyd talks about FB groups http://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=2523657
I am not sure if this is the one where he goes into detail about the effectiveness of them or not,
