Fish Identification

Hi Folks,

Can anyone identify this species of fish for me? All I know is they are edible. Thanks in advance :)

Could be a Snapper of some sort...

Ocean Perch?

Dean,

Most likely, red snapper. A color image would help, but that's my guess, right size and body shape,

Red Snapper or Red Mullet

I'm not really a fish expert

Roy, Ed,

I used to "net" mullet and I don't think they were like this. The mullet was a bit more "trout-like" if I remember correctly. But they, the mullet, made great smoked fish!!!

Ed, yes, I think we're right on this, but the color version would help,

Fresh or salt water? Sunfish family of course, like that you cant see color or anything,

Alicia,

Nope, not Sunnies for sure! I caught my share of those when I was young! LOL!

Here's (hopefully) a clearer photo. Looks more like a snapper than a mullet to me but still not sure. Thanks for all the input so far!

Change my mind with the color image, I'm thinking Tilapia now.

Looks like a white or blue grunt to me, it happens to be my favorite salt water pan fish, it's better than snapper in my book. The scales are very hard on this fish but I fry them up head and all. I used to drive from Miami to the 7 mile bridge in the Fl. keys and years ago they were much larger than what you catch these days. Looking at it closely it's a white grunt.

On second thought, it might be a tilapia like Rich suggested, I just looked at the larger photo

i'm going to stick with snapper could be a grey or mangrove ??
the reason i'm staying with snapper is the teeth in Dean's photo, i don't remember teeth like that on a tilapia.

Ed, I believe you are correct. I think they are Mangrove Snapper as well.

Rich Franco

No, not mangrove snapper, the dorsal fin on Dean's fish is almost right on top of the head and snapper, starts way on the back, And yes, tilapia have teeth,

What would change once you identified this fish?

Lutz,

what would change is the accuracy of my keywords and descriptions. Thanks for the leads guys, I will compare your suggestions against google images later. Yes, they do have teeth.

Sorry for not following up sooner but I've been away from my computer. Tilapia does look like a very likely match. Thanks to everyone for adding their input. Anyone else wants to add something before I label it tilapia?
