Extensive Or Intensive?

When you talk to the big fish in the art pool they will always advice you to keep your portfolio tight and focused.
Here it seems to work the other way around - people keep uploading tons of things and without a common theme, style or technique.
I myself can only associate a few names here with their specific art, the rest blurs into...?

depends on what your pushing. when you do stock type photos, its best to have a bit of everything.

but if your pushing art type stuff, you'll want to follow a style so people recognize its yours.

ideally you want both. lots of stuff in different themes, but using the same type of style. i think people buy that style because they like it, but they keep buying from you because you have the themes they want. thing is, you don't know what themes they want, so you have to make lots of things.

As a watercolor artist, my style is Vibrant Colors.
Other than that, my subject matter covers a wide gamut. Animals, Architecture, Trees, Fruit, Landscape, Beaches, Oceans, Boats....
I would get terribly bored only painting splashy city scapes for example.

You should do what you want to do and not let anyone else decide for you.

Might what to keep that talking to fish thing to yourself however. :-)

Choco,

Well, this isn't a "portfolio review" site, but a system of stores, with different products and artists. The broader the spectrum of your work, the more likely your work will be seen and purchased. WHY keep it narrow?

Narrow is for art shows where the viewer is looking at a group of art, something about the collection as a whole creates an artistic statement. It also tells an art gallery owner that if s/he sells one of your watercolors (for example), as an artist you are capable of, and willing to, create another one just as good in a similar style if the customer comes back for more.

For an online portfolio like FAA, I hope it doesn't matter much if there is a coherent body of work (mine isn't, or if it is I don't see the unifying theme).

If anyone out there sees a unifying theme in my work, I would be interested to know.

I've wondered some about that myself since I've expanded my mediums and style some. I suspect on a POD it doesn't really matter much, especially if you work in series so you have different bodies of work which contain artwork similar in subject and style. That way if you do develop a fan base of a particular series they'll always have something to forward to from you. In my case my subjects are mostly the same but I use a variety of mediums, however my paintings are almost all in acrylic and mostly the same style, but even the style varies a little. I sketch in just about any medium, in fact I did something new last night, a sepia ink wash sketch, but the subject is similar to other artwork. The biggest change lately is I've added photography, whether that was a bad thing to do or not I don't know, don't really have much to lose right now but a little time. I do have another website though that is strictly for selling original paintings.

Art Shows: Narrow by definition.....Categories,Theme.

FAA : Broad, extensive, by definition....all avenues of expression expected.....the Search terms prove that....the Public want that, even within each artist's oeuvre.

Don't stress it, your style will develop as you pursue your interest, or it won't!
