Contest

Does anyone feel the sameway I do regarding contest. I don't think paintings and photography should be judged in the same contest. They are just so different. I find it very difficult to vote when photography and paintings are in the same contest.

Agreed! I always specify either paintings or photos, never any medium. They are just too different and I have noticed that 90% of the time, the photo wins hands down over the paintings.

I agree, but I don't really let it concern me. The contests here have so little meaning, I just don't participate in any that bother me at all.

I think if the contest is being judged on the theme, and not just on technical merit, then all mediums can be included. If a contest is about "love" for example, and communication of that idea is the primary part of the challenge, then I don't think there's anything wrong with it being open to all mediums.

I don't worry about the contests that way anymore. I do think it would be more effective for SEO if they were more narrowly focused but I'm not sure. For me that's the only use for them. I rarely get votes but I don't sweat it. I'm just trying to get eyeballs and activity on my artwork.

you don't get a prize, it shouldn't matter. paintings often come from photos. and photos are harder to do than you think. but its up to the creator to make it the way they want it. and if its based on theme more than technique then it shouldn't matter much.

I haven't seen the issue as a huge problem so far. Most of the contests I've read about, separate the mediums by stating Photography only or Paintings only.

I actually have more of an issue with the rules that say, "Any medium", when in actuality, they mean any form of painting (I'm guessing) such as watercolor, oil, acrylic, etc. I take the phrase, "any medium" as any form of art, such as painting, film, digital, sculpture, etc. Later I find my images have been removed from the contest. If there's a potential problem of "definition" misconception or confusion, I wish the instructions would be more specific... For instance: "Any painting medium allowed", or "all art forms allowed".

I tend to agree with your intent however in the fact that generally, the mediums/media should be separate.

Have you expressed this opinion to the host(s) of the contest(s)? If so, what response if any were did you receive?

My contention has always been that any correspondence (rules/instructions) be as brief as possible but also very concise, to eliminate confusion. Some have so much to read, you forget what the rules are by the time you reach the end of it.

I have not expressed my opinion to the hosts of the contest. I agree with some of the other comments that it is not that big of a deal. The contest just helps to get your work out there. I was just curious what other members thought on the subject.
