Round Paintings And Prints

If picture framing is any measure of the numbers there are very few making round paintings. There are not many options for round frames like there were years ago. Ov course today no one uses frames anyway.

Paintings on canvas?? Too hard and expensive to frame. I did a big (4ft) round rose once (in the 80's)...I made the stretcher myself...wrapped it, so no frame was needed.
Prints?? You can cut a mat in the round and put it into a regular frame.

but why???...Round is so square, man ;)

Large round canvases are easier to roll out the door. ;-)

I have seen a number of mentions of round paintings lately and was curious if there is some kind of revival or if it is just another addition to the myriad of options available for art outlets. My interpretation of a round or circular painting is one that has all the elements designed around the shape and not so much a square painting that is cropped , almost a fisheye view style of pointing.

Round art has been out of style for many decades. I love it, and would be pleased to see it trending up again. If that happened, framing options would become more readily available, just like square art.

When I was making square prints 15 or 20 years ago, I had to build and frame them myself. Now, square frames are available almost everywhere (thank goodness)!

You can't post a round image here. Even in the area where it mentions an original for sale you can't enter a round dimension. I have several small round paintings of dog faces that I take to art shows and in order to sell them here as prints I had to turn them into squares in Photoshop.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have done it as such.

That's a wonderful painting. It wouldn't have that great composition in a round.
