Hurricane Joaquin Set To Hit North Carolina, Points West And North

All the computer scenarios now point to a Category 2 or 3 hurricane hitting North Carolina Friday while a stalled moisture system sits over us. Forecasters say we could get 1-2 FEET (12-24 inches) of rain in 2-3 days. Sustained winds inland of 40 MPH (90+ when it hits the coast) will cause power outages and flooding.

I have filled numerous water jugs and we have set precautions in place, just in case. Lots of food on hand but we will lose a lot if the power fails.

Stay safe, people!

it may it nj, for now i cleaned under the porch and moved the stuff that can catch the wind. right now they think it will be a rain event. i'm not sure how much we will get but they estimated from 5-10 - and 10-20 in some areas. right now they aren't up the point of knowing where i live.

Keep safe guys! With our mega-drought in California, I might be a tad bit envious of the rain - If only we could split the quantity with you :-)

i saw two maps so far. one hitting the carolinas, then moving inland, and another that is hugging the coast right to nj. one model they say has it going right out to sea again, but i don't see that happening.

we haven't had any rain here for many weeks. we are getting it all it seems all at once. i just hope the every other day its raining - doesn't carry over into winter.

Those concerned about the rain and potential flooding on the east coast from the carolinas north should NOT be focusing solely on the position of the hurricane.

Asheville weather report for Friday (today): Today the heavy rain will continue to fall. We'll see 1-2" possible per hour. This could lead to flash flooding concerns. Cloudy, cool and rainy today across the region. Highs around 60 degrees with heavy rain throughout the day. Tonight, the heaviest rain will begin to fall.

An upper-level low pressure system will combine with Gulf and tropical moisture. This is recipe for potentially life-threatening floods. Hurricane Joaquin is now a Category 4 storm with 130 mph sustained winds. The path is east of the Carolina coastline, yet moisture will still heavily impact the Carolinas. Many locations will receive between 6-10" and localized areas could see over a foot of rain in through the weekend.

Flash flooding and landslide concerns are expected to arise across the region.
