Autumn Splendor - Foliage Report From Your Neck Of The Woods

The foliage season is starting to heat up around here in New Hampshire. Wet low areas like my backyard are the first to show signs of color. Here is a shot of my backyard:

I saw a yellow oak leaf float past my window yesterday but the view as a whole here in southeastern PA is still very green. Autumn can't happen fast enuf for me, I despise summer. Ick.

Pretty green around here! A few spots of yellow, but no bright oranges or reds yet!

The ferns started dying weeks ago. The warm weather seems to be delaying things a bit. I think I'll head up north into Vermont tomorrow and see if I can see anything.

We have another 3 weeks or so in New Jersey before things hit their peak colors. With the lack of rain being so bad that lakes are drying up (My favorite waterfall to shoot is nonexistent), some trees are dropping their leaves without benefit of color change. Guess we'll see how it progresses.

Jeez I wasn't paying attention to the weather. I guess won't be getting up north.

I have a fall foliage website for this type of stuff and you can visit here http:www.jeff-foliage.com and my Facebook page for fall foliage is https://www.facebook.com/NewEnglandFoliage/timeline/

I posted ths current report from an hour or so ago...

I also received a foliage report from Bob, an hour ago!
***************************************************************************
Weather in New Hampshire not very cooperative today, however things are looking up for tomorrow afternoon and Thursday. What difference a day makes. Went north into Whitefield which is north of Bethlehem and saw some areas of really nice color. Was going to head to Dixville Notch, but the rain turned us back. I noticed much more color today. Don’t know if it’s because everything is wet, but the trees do change quickly at times. Hopefully we’ll be able to head north tomorrow to see how things are going up there.

Dry. Brown. Dead-ish. And still hot.

Same as the last 100 or so days.

Indeed, I'm w-a-y too far south. :-(

Some trees have turned here, not many though, it's been July hot the last couple days. I did see some aspens that were bright orange up around the 10,000 ft level about two weeks ago so I'm going to check out the local canyons this weekend.

Edward,et al,

One of the finest places for Fall color AND waterfalls, is the George W. Childs National Park, just on the other side of Dingman's Ferry bridge, which goes over the Delaware River, in Northern NJ/PA . Here's my gallery from there last year. Last year. by the way, the water was a bit low, so ONLY about 40 waterfalls!!!

I'd wait a week after the rain stops from what's coming right now and then Tropical Storm Joaquin, which will let the water get a bit clearer after this much rain falls. Anyone can email me for more info.

That is a great waterfall!

This storm will recharge the falls nicely. Unlike some years, its early so the leaves should survive.

We're still recovering from Irene although most of the covered bridges have been repaired or replaced by now. Hopefully it won't be a repeat of Irene - couldn't drive around because the roads and bridges were all washed out.

Love looking at everyone else's fall foliage - our oak trees here in California don't turn spectacular colors they just go brown and drop their leaves. During our terrible drought they are greening up in the spring and going dormant by July to protect themselves :-(

Rich Franco

Edward,

Thanks! But as I mentioned, there was low water last year and I can't imagine what this would look like with another foot or so of water coming over it. In addition, there would be a hundred more small waterfalls, all over the place!

Shots like this, by the hundreds!

Still green around here. The temps returning to the lower 80's haven't helped towards colors changing.

Looks like a week of rain in the forecast for the Northeast. Raining like crazy today. Looks like the leaves are clinging on.

Sorry to say that brown is the color-of-the-day in Southern California.

Streets that used to be colorful are brown, lawns are brown. Even in Beverly Hills. Well... some.

But we are conserving water, and that is what counts right now.

A hundred years from now, who knows what the crisis will be?

Mike Savad

dull greens, rusty oranges, mostly dead leaves or naked ones. even the bright sugar maples looks like someone turned the saturation down on them. i guess little johnny won't get an autumn this year...

see what will happen now is, we will have a big ice storm and it will take down all the trees like in the past. hoping that won't be the case this year.

My brother-and-law and sister sold their horse ranch in California and moved to Aiken, South Carolina, because that was the cheapest water in the US.

Last time I talked to her, they had plenty of it, and some to spare!

Oh egads, I'm gonna stop complaining about leaf color now :x

starting to see some nice color in CT, a few trees are brilliant. Most are still green. Probably 20% of peak

Another funny year, the reds came on early, and gone before the yellows started. Now they are turning fast, these aspens were green a week before this photo was taken.

We didn't get enough rain here in Brussels this summer, so a lot of the trees just look burnt up rather than the dynamic colors I saw in the fall 2 years ago. I did get out to one of the streets lined with trees last Tuesday and catch the trees before the storms pulled all the leaves down, so it wasn't a total loss.

Edward Fielding

Mike, you might want to straighten out that lake so the water doesn't run out!

Dull and grey today with possible rain. Hopefully it doesn't drop a lot of leaves. Drive all over Vermont yesterday it was different in each region. Some areas haven't peaked, other have dropped their leaves already. Seems like the afternoons are better than mornings as the days start out hazy from fog. Low late afternoon light fires up the colors as long as you are not in the shadows of the mountains.

I was taking in some great farm country along 110 in Chelsea, Corith, Washington, Peachem, Barnet, along the CT river on Route 5. I love the areas of VT where the main roads are dirt and you can pull over and take pictures for 10 minutes and not one car goes by.

Saw a number of photographers on the backroads as well as a lot of cows. Got a free bale of hay for the garden as a farm truck dropped a few on the road.

So nice to shoot at ISO 100 F8 with decent shutterspeeds - thank you SUN! Come back and see us more often!

We were about a week early for peak fall colors in California's High Sierra mountains near Mammoth Lakes. These were taken almost 2 weeks ago, and they have had some light snow since then. I would imagine many places are right at peak now. These images were taken at 9,000 to 10,000 ft elevation and are probably past prime now, but the lower elevations should be popping!

Toby the southern end should be great. Peaking up north. Here in the upper valley we are a few days away from peak.

You can check out foliage maps online.

Here is a great event for you - http://www.shakers.org/oct-17-vintage-car-show/

I hit it last year and the sun came out just as we were leaving and it was great - for about 10 minutes.

Thank you everyone for posting your pretties! I really do miss fall, the closest thing I get here is when the cypress goes from green to burnt orange, which hasn't happened yet. Its one of the big things I miss about the appalachians, that and the crunch under my feet while taking a walk in the woods. Loved pouring through all of your posts:)

Hey Edward - thanks for the recommendation but that's how the lake was - it was not a straight horizontal line, rather the shoreline was moving away from me from right to left. Driving me nuts too but if I straighten it, the trees look crooked.

Edward Fielding

Mike - I see what you mean - the trees are straight up.
...

Driving last night I was momentarily in a "leaf storm". Light rain and wind caused a few trees to let loose their leaves. Looked like a blizzard of leaves. I'd say the Upper Valley region is peaking now.

Remember - green is a color. Better than bare.

Looks like this weekend a bit of winter is coming. Maybe even some snow. Time is ticking away....

In 2012 we had a freak October snowstorm was great. Just enough to cover the ground but not enough to suck up time shoveling or preventing travel.

i can get green any ol time. the 33f temps we are getting this weekend will just encourage them to maybe drop down. on the plus side, we don't have slippery sidewalks from the leaves. color is still very sparse. often we get a good windstorm and then they all come down. but so far there isn't anything i feel like pulling a camera out for yet. i remember after hurricane sandy we have shots of orange leaves, then it snowed like 5-6 inches and we had shots of that the next day. this year its warmer or as accuweather likes calling it -- less brutal. whatever that means.

i think this one was taken after sandy. wished i lived in a more scenic area. the best area was removed for houses, so i can't even get that. suburb roads are not that nice, i really need a more scenic area. but we look and the leaves are dull and boring.

last year was a bit better

and the year before that was ok, but we always seem to go to this place when the leaves are pretty much gone. hoping if we go back (they hold an event at a certain time), that the leaves will still be there and in color by then.

Had to get a chipped windshield fixed so while I was over that direction I tooled around Quechee and Woodstock Vermont. Flooded with leaf peepers by the bus load holding up their iPads.

Still lots of great color around but some trees are bare. Dark overcast skies were not helping the situation.
