Central Park

we have plans to maybe go to central park this year (if we get autumn leaves), or next. in the planning stages right now, i have a few questions:

1. is it safe? we won't be there at night, but we have heard stories even in the day time there might be issues.

2. what is the best part, photographically speaking, that we should be in?

i'm not sure if i have a 3rd question yet.

thanks

Very safe during the day. Bow Bridge is a beautiful area to photograph right on the lake. Wollman rink in the summer is beautiful as well as in the winter. As the lake is lined by some beautiful buildings in the background.

This isn't the same park as it was in the 70's and 80's, Mike! I agree, the lake is a lovely place to walk and photograph. Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace, The Poets' Walk, Shakespeare's Garden, The Oak Bridge, Belvedere Castle.

I went there this summer and stayed mainly around Central Park South and it seemed perfectly safe. Of course, a place as wealthy and expensive as that area will generally be pretty safe.

There are tons of people milling around, families, kids --- the city has been cleaned up from its bankrupt days. The Warriors wouldn't recognize it.

You would like the High Line park also.

i've been to highline. step off the path and a screamer starts lecturing you. i almost fell on my face tripping over a hidden bench ramp thing. its a good way to move across town pretty fast. i think they might have opened more of it since i was last there, which was a few years back.

Mike,

Just do a search for Central Park images and see what's out there and then find out where it is,when it was taken, morning, late afternoon, etc. and make a list of shots. Have an assistant or friend with you, so you can concentrate on the photography and not worry about the camera bag/gear.etc. I can get you a list of professional assistants if needed, $150-$250/day, or half day rates too.

You're only across the river, this shouldn't be a big deal!

sounds rather expensive. i just need a sherpa to carry the bag. technically i live near by, but we don't want to drive there because its way too hard to drive and park there. we figured out a bus route that takes us mostly there, but we have to walk down a mile in the city before getting there. i never like having my camera out for that long in a city, maybe its just me over thinking things.

last place i was pittsburgh, where i kept the camera in the bag most of the time, and most of the weight on my shoulder, i ended up popping my knee by day 3 and it was not that fun...

If you go dressed as you are in your avatar pic, I have a feeling you be safe at any time of day or night.

Bus to the depot then subway to Central Park. You walk out in the SW corner.

Perfectly safe day and night at least on the southern half I frequented.

1) NJ Transit train in Westfield.

2) Penn Station: transfer to the Subway ( A train to Columbus Circle... 59th st). That's the easy part, Mike.

Mike,

Easy trip. You won't be the only person walking around with a camera and tripod. Like everyone says, bus, subway, map of central park would be good. Give me a budget and I'll try and find a sherpa, day,1/2 day, but still $50 or so for 1/2 day, maybe $100 for a full, 8 hour day.

For you, I would find a bunch of iconic shots and then travel there for 3-4 seasons and retake from the same place and then sell them as a grouping. Planning is very important, if you want to cut down on the walking around and looking.

Basically what Diana (Above) said,

My wife and I walked about the Park for hours and never seen anything untoward.

Heck Mike you can take the train from Westfield to Penn Station and then cab uptown to the Park. It's super easy.

Mike
Go to Youtube and look up Erik Conovers vlog. He and his girlfriend live in Manhatten and go to Central park also may have archive footage of it. Lots of info on NYC and they will answer questions

You can photograph from the comfort and the safety of a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park - classic.

Here you go: Central Park Autumn inspiration.

There are people from India wearing turbines asleep on park benches hugging their sitars.

Trey Ratcliff's Stuck on Earth app is pretty good for letting you see what kind of photos are available in an area.

At least at one time the city cleared out on the weekends. I have parked up by the Guggenheim on the street for free and walked central park
on a date. Back in 2001
