What's Wrong With A Long Black Goth Skirt And Bovver Boots

I am meeting an FAA friend for the first time tomorrow.... I said what I would be wearing to meet her at the station and she said...and I quote....

'O gawd!'

I mean really...

What's wrong with a long black goth skirt and bovver boots?

LoL

This is true but, not a serious question, however, it got me to thinking....

What would you wear to a first time meet? Casual, offbeat or strictly Sunday best?. I'm wearing a long black goth skirt and bovver boots lol

Sounds cool to me! I don't know what bovver boots are, but I'm sure they're rad. I would wear my usual black....something or other.

Whatever you're comfortable in, Abbie. There's nothing worse than feeling out of place. That's why I really don't like to go to the few restaurants left where you need a coat and tie for the men and formal wear for the women. I won't frequent any restaurant where I feel out of place in blue jeans. Fortunately, I live in a town that caters to the boating community so the high end restaurant we have with the white table cloths, etc., has a lot of patrons in shorts in the summer. Nice shorts, but shorts nonetheless.

What makes a skirt "Goth" besides being black? I had to look up Bovver boots, they just appear to be high top work (or combat) boots, they look crazy uncomfortable. Obviously I'm no fashion geek, I'd just wear whatever I normally wear which is boring old tennis shoes, denim shorts or jeans, and a t-shirt or polo shirt. That's about as deep as my fashion gets.

I still love them! Nothing wrong if the place is proper ;)

combat boots! lol

what I'd wear would depend on what we were doing...it would probably not vary much from what I wear all the time now. Black yoga pants, black sneakers and colorful big shirts.

Alicia BRYANT

A Smile. Same thing I always wear when I go shooting, tank-top (or weather appropriate shirt) , jeans, "girl hat", Military issue boots (a must for wildlife photography)

I own exactly one dress. I wore it to a wedding several years ago and a few pounds ago so I'm not sure it would fit me now. I NEVER wear skirts. Just not comfortable in them. I also have the dress I wore to my son's wedding, but I'll probably never wear that again either.

Black jeans, black, blue or peach shirt, tennis shoes.

Can't go wrong with jeans

have any pictures? i would imagine that outfit would be suitable in a graveyard.

well i wouldn't wear a dress personally... i would wear what i would normally wear. i don't have any other things. though i do have new fireman boots, so i guess i could match you for odd boots.

I really hope she was joking in her response. I mostly don't care what others wear, but I am always casual these days. It just bugs me when somebody wears the same darned thing all the time, such as a jaunty hat. I love hats, but some people never change them up. Jeans are my go-to, always and forever, but I didn't wear them to a wedding last year. I wore a jeans skirt, lol. Have a good time!

When I met a fellow FAA'r for the first time I think I was wearing capri's, sleeveless blouse and of course,

flip flops, my footwear of choice.

In my younger days they used to be called thongs, but once people started wearing "thongs" as b**t floss they were promptly changed to flip flops. My kids got angry whenever I would call my footwear thongs!

Mary Bedy

Julie we used to call them thongs, foot flops, or zorries. I have not heard the zorries thing for a long time, though.

Parker Cunningham

Nothing wrong with that at all. Here is to hoping she was kidding! I usually keep it pretty casual. Khaki/cargo shorts, a casual t-shirt or a collared t-shirt depending on my mood, and whatever shoes I can find lying around, usually a nice pair of flip-flops. Hope you have fun tomorrow!

oh ya that is very cool !!! but then again I don't dress up yoga pants and berks :)

Michelle McPhillips

I get that same response too. That's why I don't bother telling people what I am wearing. But then again I have a bunch of tattoos and purple hair so people can just assume what they want. I don't care. But to answer the question I guess would depend on where we were meeting and the weather. But I would want to look nice. Perhaps I would wear a dress or maybe some tank tops with edgy pants, with boots or sandals. But usually my first priority is to wear something clean. So if its last minute tshirt and jeans. Hope y'all have fun!

Lisa Kaiser

There's nothing wrong with your style. I like my ripped up jeans and boots. I would probably wear my Sunday best for most first meetings, but I can't put on a show for long.

Suzanne Powers

Sounds perfect! I wear skirts a lot, there are so many fun styles for casual and better wear. Your outfit sounds appropriate for going just about anywhere.

I take it your friend probably was thrown by the word "goth" which could mean different things. I would think she knows you well enough to come visit and seen pics of you to know you would be dressed nicely! Her remark was inappropriate and makes me wonder how many other things she may not like and express her opinion without any apparent consideration of your feelings!

I realize now I can't have a relationship with someone who constantly expresses their opinions, especially when not asked and in a negative way. We all like different things. Hopefully she doesn't have this kind of reaction very often, if she does you may want to reconsider having her as a friend or it could be toxic. I had to leave a Facebook group (many others did too) because of a toxic admn. It's not healthy hearing a lot of negative reactions from someone.

My "rule of thumb" is to be neat, clean and, above all else, comfortable.

There's a good chance I would be wearing a kilt - either a real tartan or (more likely) a black utility kilt.
Footwear would either be black (motorcycle) boots or, if the weather is warm, flip-flop sandals.
(Y'see, I live at the beach.)

That is so much easier to find someone who you have not met than looking for a woman in jeans and a sweatshirt or a black dress.

But I will admit little black dress and ankle booties is my latest go to outfit.

I would just wear my usual which for me would probably be a t-shirt and jeans. If they're meeting me, well they should meet me. No need for dress up, I wouldn't be going onto an interview, I would be meeting a friend. If a long black goth skirt and bovver boots is your usual, then go for it!

Abbie Shores

Haha she was totally joking... She ribs me a lot...it's why I want to meet her lol

Yes, it is my style but when I met the last FAAer I wore jeans and hiking boots as I knew we were going to tramp around Manchester.

This poor lady is coming home with me for the day and will have to put up with going out for lunch and coming to the dog training so the pups can show off for her.

I'm so glad to see most of you will just stay true to who you are. How refreshing!

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

The only thing I ever know I'm wearing before I am dressed is a pair of very non sensible shoes or boots that I will curse with every step I take. Would definitely consider a long black goth skirt. Would absolutely not consider flats.

Abbie, I have two pair of combat boots and I love them. I also have a few pairs of Chuck Taylors and some hiking/trail walking shoes. I'm a little bit of a tomboy, I guess you could say. I don't do heels. They may be pretty, but they make me feel hobbled and I hate that.

Were I to meet anyone from FAA, I would definitely dress casual. Most days, it's jeans and a tee or a sweater. I have a weakness for really soft sweaters. I also own a lot of hiking/outdoorsy style pants and shorts and like those.

When I was a tiny little girl, scratchy wool plaid skirts were in vogue. So were hot and sticky nylon blouses and circle skirts, which were worn over scratchy, stiff net slips (petticoats). My little legs would break out in seriously angry red hives and I was miserable from the time I was forced into them until I could rip them off. I also learned that if I got car sick and managed to vomit on everything I was wearing instead of aiming elsewhere, those horrible, scratchy clothes would come off and I could wear one of Grandma's soft sweaters instead.

I vowed that the day I became the boss of me, I would never again wear anything that wasn't comfortable. Wool clothing of any type was the first to go, followed by burning my first bra when I was 13. I do like to wear skirts and dresses on occasion but they have to be absolutely comfortable. Now that I'm old I wear anything I damn well please with complete impunity because when a woman is old, she is invisible.

My default setting is the New England prep / office-casual look. Khakis, solid color T, a simple piece of jewelry, closed-toe flat or low-heeled shoes. Substitute turtle-neck and/or add cardigan if it's cold.

That changes depending on the context, I wore out-of-style jeans (no big deal if it got paint on them) & one of my hand-painted paint-shirts to the art workshop I just attended. Some of my fellow attendees were discussing some people they met at a different workshop (saying nice things, not being mean) and identifying them by the clothes they wore... made me decide to pay more attention to what I wear the next time.

They don't remember your name, they don't remember the art you made, they remember the jokes you tell and the clothes you wear. Go figure.

Dave:

"My Irish mom was lucky to get shoes. There was nothing in the budget for boots."

The kids in my school had boots... one pair, for the winter, and that's it. Most of the boots had sprung leaks by about half-way through the winter (gotta love those icy New England slush-puddles on the playground). Kids put plastic Wonder Bread bags around their feet, and stuffed them back into their leaky boots for the rest of the season.

I was lucky, if my boots leaked I usually got another pair. Mom wasn't a big fan of frostbite.

Jane McGowan

Whatever you feel most comfortable in :-) And if its bovver boots so be it :-)

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

Truth be told, I live in jammies because I literally leave the house only 4-5 times a year, kicking and screaming as I'm torn from my beloved sanctuary. But you can be damn sure those kicking legs end in an absolutely awesome pair of shoes/masochistic torture devices and the bag either coordinates or contrasts but never matchy matches. When I'm in public I am a designer fashion plate, but it's actually all a terrible lie. When I'm home, I'm all about snooginess and bare feet until winter rolls around and fuzzy socks are back in vogue for the SMS Fall/Winter Collection. I also share a penchant for fuzzy sweaters that are many times too big... da bigger and more cotton-laden da better. I am also usually draped in genuine bichon fur.

So, when we doin' lunch John? I trust you won't have any issues signing a model release in that Poncho of Awesomeness, right? =)

What's wrong with a long black goth skirt and bovver boots?

It really depends on the person wearing them and how they are worn.

They can be really naff on one person and the complete opposite on another.

I guarantee if you had the best fashion designer in the world dress you up for your first meet, somebody would have something bad to say about it. Everyone is so different and we all have diverse taste, never take it seriously when one has an unfavorable opinion. I am sure you looked great! Its all about how you are in your own unique way. You are the only one who should be judging yourself : )

Not veer too far off topic, but that's first I ever heard of Disney being a bigot, so I looked it up:

http://www.cartoonbrew.com/disney/walt-disney-was-no-gender-bigot-94682.html

As far as the accusations from M. Streep, I usually take comments from the hollywood crowd with a very small grain of salt.

Mike Savad

he was bigoted against black people for the most part. "making the boy dance for him and his guests" the guy who sung in one of his films

here's one page, http://www.vulture.com/2013/12/walt-disney-anti-semitism-racism-sexism-frozen-head.html but i heard about this stuff from many years back. i just can't remember the singers name, he had a beard and a not so slender body if i recall. when he showed up at a party disney was hosting, he wanted to have him dance for them, as that was a thing in those days. the racist 20's or something like that.

he might run the happiest place on earth, but there is a dark side too.

other people with a not so great record were edison and ford.

"...as that was a thing in those days. the racist 20's or something like that."

That statement pretty much sums it up then. It wasn't just Disney, but apparently the "thing in those days". We still take the grandkids to Disney World, because what Walt allegedly said/did is ancient history. If we delved into more icons from that era and what they said or did we would probably be really ticked-off and boycotting a number of businesses/brands. Our ancestors did a lot of stupid things that unfortunately cannot be undone, but we can rise above it.

Okay, back to the regularly scheduled programming. :)

though while he grew up then, i think it carried over to later on. my grandmother had all kinds of racist things she said which was totally normal. as we wince when she said it.

Good to know it was Dorothy! I think of her as a lovely person, sorry I didn't get the Lol at the end of one of Abbie's comments. Look at her with a hand on both doggies that are surrounding her! I know you wonderful time together! Like the new carpeting/flooring, looks great.

On the subject of Mr. Disney and being predjudiced, I have only seen a brief history of him on TV. My hunch is he was a person of the times. I don't have to tell you what the laws were back then concerning segregation. I was prejudiced concerning African Americans because where I grew up was mostly white in an all white neighborhood until I moved to Richmond and got to know many African Americans.

Abbie Shores

I will be grateful for the day when we do not have to say white Americas/African Americans/British/Chinese blah blah but just say humans... you are all just humans to me.

Anyway, this is WAY off topic and I want to now what you wear when visiting people

Is this how people in the US see 'Bovver boots' (aka Dr Martens)?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84c8b_Ol4Lk

Just askin' :)

Very pleased to hear you and Dorothy had a chance to meet, Abbie! Sounds like a fun time! :-)

I love to dress up, but am comfortable dressing down, too. What I'd wear to meet someone for a nice brunch, lunch, or tea would be very different from what I'd wear to climb around with the cameras. (And/or the dogs!) :-)

Most of it would be black or near-black, and unconventional, but bovver boots would never be part of the plan -- I hate wearing anything too heavy on my feet. Probably left over from growing up in Wisconsin. We couldn't afford a car, or even the bus most times, so I spent many hours of childhood trudging from place to place wearing snow and ice encrusted, tall boots. Ugh - no joy.

Hope you ladies had a nice visit!

It was a great day - yes of course I was joking!!! English sense of humour (or perhaps just me!). Patricia I am glad you like my shoes, the pups liked them too (I think they must smell of my own dog). Hannah particularly seemed to like me I have to say! Suzanne thank you for the compliment. As I was travelling I didn't have access to my whole wardrobe but I confess I always like to be comfortable so it is unlikely that I would have dressed any differently.
