It's still a toy. JMHO. Anyone can take a good picture in great light when it is shown 1000 pixels wide on a website.

May be but guaranteed I won't give up my camera for it or any other smartphone! I have the 6plus and rarely take photos with it, Impossible to see the display in bright light or to get a really good view without a view finder and on and on,,,

"The result in low-light situation is astounding when compared to the iPhone’s predecessors and almost all of its smartphone competitors. That doesn’t mean your photos will be perfect. Washington, D.C.-based photographer Brooks Kraft tells us, for example, that inside the Capitol, as he followed Pope Francis’ visit, he had difficulties capturing movement, resulting in images where the main subject was blurry. (The iPhone has a tendency to keep ISO low, even in low-light situations, as it favors fast shutter speeds to prevent motion blur.)"

That line about the low ISO doesn't make sense, in a low light situation a higher ISO would result in a faster shutter speed.

Not an iPhone fan (wife had two with issues), but she does have a Samsung Galaxy S4 now, that has a 13 MP rear camera with LED flash (and 1080p Full HD video recording she doesn't use). The S4 takes great shots in the right light, but does get noisy, like a lot of brands do, in low-light situations.

Yeah Michael. They probably meant it tried to keep ISO down to reduce noise.

"OLIVE" is the very first full length feature film shot 100% on a cell phone (a Nokia N8). They used double-stick tape to attach a 35mm lens adaptor, then hacked the phone to turn off the auto focus and the auto zoom. See how beautiful this looks:

In theaters Christmas Eve.

The "art" part of ART is never about equipment.

Greg -- I'm not a Smartphone fan either ... I use an iPad with wifi. But found this article interesting basically for what Dan just said.

SO basically, the IPhone 6S is about where Galaxy was with their S4 a few years back.

Yes, a good photographer can capture great images with a so so camera including cell cameras IF the light is great. As soon as the light becomes iffy then the camera uses all functionality.

They are great for snapshots like showing the futility of a two wheel drive truck.

Sell Art Online

Yes, I actually sell phone shots on here. These have sold recently.

GREAT light and a smaller size they can work but they have major limitations.

Now, this is an extreme example but these images were shot side by side at the same time. One with the Canon and one the Galaxy.....

Marketing 101. Look how great this product is. We gave it to pros in great light and look what they did. Think how great yours will be.

I use my iPhone 5S for reference photos for paintings, I get great results. I actually prefer it to my regular camera in some instances because my camera has a slower shutter speed.

If you want to do some pixel peeping, here are images from the S6 on Flickr

Want to look up a smartphone or camera that you're interested in here is the Flickr camera finder

The top 2 camera brands by the way on Flickr are Apple and Samsung.

I require a viewfinder. Even with point and shoots, I want a view finder. Also I hate getting phone calls when I'm trying to take pictures. The bride typically gets ticked off when I tell her to hold that pose while I take a call from my mom.

...
I'd also miss shallow depth of field.

Frank,

Yep, just posting about the good shots the Galaxy S4 can take, in decent light. I'm not a Smartphone person either. I still use my MotoRazr flip phone, which is 8 years old, and still uses the original battery. It has a massive 1.3mp camera, which took this shot:

Concur with Edward about using a viewfinder also.

Is it just me. or do these two statements contradict each other?

"They used double-stick tape to attach a 35mm lens adaptor, then hacked the phone to turn off the auto focus and the auto zoom."

"The "art" part of ART is never about equipment."

And as for the pics in this article. I'm not impressed.

edit- The movie looks good though.

Greg: A cell phone as opposed to, say, a $300,000 Sony Professional HD video camera. Higher technology doesn't guarantee better art. The music isn't in the piano. Hemingway's novels weren't in his typewriter. That sort of thing.

I was never a fan of smartphone photos until I tried the 5s and now the 6Plus. They will never replace my Nikon but I'm pretty impressed with their panoramic function. I've printed several between 48" & 72" and am completely satisfied with the quality. Here are a few I've taken with it.
