It Is Friday....weekend Plans?

Well, to my utter dismay it is raining-and not the atrocious downpour of huge raindrops-the slow painful mist that obscures the sky, and just makes everything grey and dismal. It is like everything is flat, with no hint of sunlight to add contrast to the curves corners and bumps. Of course I got my new lens and teleconverter yesterday, but apparently in my excitement, I ordered the af version of the lens and not the af-s version, so the tele-converter is useless to me, and I must make due with the 400mm the lens was born with. I had planned on working on some different lighting setups for the portraits I do, but I lent a person formerly known as friend my portable light setup for a one day shoot a few weeks ago, and have been trying to get in tough with her to get my things back as I was starting to feel like she may not be planning on returning them......finally got in tough with her and apparently (or so she claims) the day she was using my lights outdoors it was terribly windy and two of my light stands, including the soft-boxes and lights were broken. I attempt to hide my "angry face" and tell he I need to get all of my things for a shoot I have on Sunday-to which she responds, they are locked in the shed at her mother's house (2 hour drive) and she cant get there until saturday, and will "drop them by my house" Saturday night. That to me equates to "No, you will never get your shit back, sorry". Thankfully it was a cheap portable system

We have had rain, rain, rain the last few days and nights but Sat and Sun promise to be sunny and comfortable - pretty much perfect fall weather. Unfortunately, it's painting the hall that's on my agenda. Our four-year-old grand-daughter is coming up to spend the weekend and to help me. Two weeks ago when she was here she helped strip wallpaper. It's taken the last two weeks to finish and then to repair the mess and get ready to paint.

Lest you think I am a total idiot for letting a kid this age help, we are getting ready to have new flooring put down so we have taken up the baseboards and could care less about the nasty carpet that's going to be replaced. I've done the trim work for the primer coat so what we will be doing together is the big areas of primer.

As far as photography is concerned, my hope is to get a great picture of her with her "birthday chair". Every year (started at 3 wks, then 6 months, then 1, 2, and 3 years) I have taken a picture of her in or by or on one of our dining room chairs within about a month of her birthday. She turned four in late August.

The yearly parking lot carnival is here in the local church parking lot a block from my house. May set the camera at a high ISO and try to get some photos of the carousel and other stuff. Depends how crowded it is......

I hope you do get your stuff back. I ordered the wrong remote shutter release so I know how you feel, but in my case it only cost me 7 bucks and it works with my other camera....finally got the right one for the newer camera.

Well, last weekend I got to go to a Lego convention with my son. This weekend I get to go to a birthday party at the American Girl doll store with my daughter. For little girls, this is a BIG deal. Although, I admit that I might be just as excited to see this place as she is. ; )

@valerie I had my daughters birthday party at the American Girl store a few years ago.... It was actually a great time..... though I spent a ton of cash on it but I would do anything for that little girl (she's gonna be 12 this year so not so little anymore) and you can't put a price tag on making memories

I get it, Brian! Mine is 8, and after this birthday party for her friend I fully expect to be begged to book a party there for my daughter's 9th--which I have no doubt her Dad will agree to. He sounds a lot like you. : )

For what it is worth I actually enjoyed the part and the food was excellent....

It is going to be a beautiful weekend here in KC area. My wife and son and I are attending a festival in Lexington, where my painting took second place in the art contest.

Kevin, Grats on your Painting placing! I remember the first time one of my photographic works placed in a show-It was my first show, and I actually won First Place! A politician-Phil Leventis purchased it for his wife for her birthday. I was so excited.

A party at the American girl store? I wanna go! I would have to do a modeling shoot, with the dolls of course!

The person that has my kit used to be my friend. She helped me with two portraits sessions, just taking orders, not doing any photography. She wanted to go into business together doing portraits, and we talked about it, but she actually does not have the "gift" of using a camera, she is not able to edit or use any tech, and I got the feeling she wanted me to do all of the work while she made the profit. I also have a day job that supports the family, and could not give that up for portrait photography full time, as anyone who has done it knows, every mom with a point and shoot is offering their services for free, and there is a limited market for specialty creative portraiture, when wal-mart studio can offer a huge package for pennies based on sheer volume of sales. I did not hear from her for a month or so, and next thing I hear is her mother (who is married to a millionare) has backed her business Idea, and she is "partners" with a large studio. I of course tell her I am happy for her. Next I hear her partners dumped her because she does not have the skills of a photographer, and she wants me to be her partner, which I decline-then she borrows my stuff, and I will probably never see it again.....

Block party tomorrow night, Sunday is an antiques/flea market in the arts district. Somewhere in there I'd like to go out for sushi and do a little painting.

It has been quite a hazy overcast morning, but I was able to get out in the yard to try out the new 80-400mm on the d810-I have had the camera for nearly two weeks, and due to my "old" long lens not working properly with it had not gotten to take a single bird shot, but now am feeling better, and a bit amazed at the quality and detail the combo pulled.

Going to Camden, SC in a little while, my daughter and I am going "Junking" and I hope to do some street and landscape shots. She is 15, and thankfully love to junk and shoot-totally my DNA.

I would love to shoot at a flea/antique market! I worked at a flea market when I was a teenager, and had the gift of sales-which I am still an excellent negotiator when making purchases-I scored a 17-35mm 2.8 at a local pawn shop-it was marked $1000, and I got it for $400-and they threw in an accoustic guitar for my daughter. The lens was in basically new condition, and I couldent find it for less that $1500 online.

Here are the shots from this morning if anyone is interested in how the combo worked out-ISO 1600, f/6.3, 1/125 shutter.

Enjoy,
