How To Distinguish Versions?

What's the best way to distinguish between different versions of the same photo? I had a color version of one photo and then posted a black-and-white version. I tried to add "Black and White" to the second title in parentheses, like so:

Roller Coaster Riders (Black and White)

But I got an error message saying I couldn't use punctuation. (Not even an apostrophe?!!!!!)

I'm also thinking of having different orientations -- vertical, horizontal, square -- and I was going to put that in the title too. And maybe some other kinds of photo manipulations. But won't it look weird to have a number of variations with the exact same title? Is there another way to do it?

Aaron,

I can not answer the question. I have not run up against, but I am sure others have.

You have four images and four galleries? uh?

Just getting started, David. ;) I'm just playing with it for now, figuring out how I want it to work. I'm not really expecting to sell for a while.

No symbols can be frustrating sometimes but that comes down to they way webpages for images are created using the title.

Just don't use punctuation that aren't allowed such as parentheses. For instance, you can use a dash in the title instead. I believe you can also use an underscore or underline.
I believe you can even get away with an apostrophe such as "Don't" these days. (they've changed it a bit recently). It still doesn't take quotation marks however, or some other punctuation. You have to do some trial and error and if that doesn't pan out, be more inventive such as the tips I write in the next paragraph below...

Some of my different versions, I simply gave it a completely different title and in the keywords I added different ways of signaling, "black and white" such as... BW, B/W, B&W, black and white, black/white, black-white, grayscale, gray-scale, monotone, monochrome, etc. Primarily use the ones you think might be most common in a search, but if you end up with less than 500 characters, add as many as you can.

I format mine with a dash...Roller Coaster Riders - Black and White

I recently started a separate B/W gallery - title, description and keywords identical to the other image. The file name on my end is identified with a BW at the end. I did not see why the name, description or key words would be different for the two versions. as I type, I still cant think of a reason why two identical images would have different descriptions. I am currious for responses for some reasons. Maybe I am missing something.

I guess I was too trusting of the error message. I'm glad to know I can use some punctuation. I'll experiment.

I think distinguishing the versions in the title will just make it easier for people to go to exactly what they prefer, and also to find it again if they come back.

Do not use exactly the same name for pieces, like

Beauty ...... Beauty

But no reason not to use

Beauty..... Beauty in black and white

Hi Abbie, why is that?

Sometimes the system will mix up the thumbnails if the name is the same.

I just add BW or in Black and white.

i add a BW on the end. the system is allergic to common characters.

I just added what was different about it at the end, for example BW, Sepia and Square. I tried to put dashes in between the title and the modifier but the system doesn't like that either, probably it puts dashes in itself for the file name.

It's usually not a good idea to have multiple files named the same in any database, it obviously causes problems with FAA's.

Islander, I always post horizontal and vertical of the same subject if it works in both. You never know the shape of the space someone is trying to fill when they buy art. I also just put "black and white" or BW on the end of the title without any dashes or anything. And the apostrophe does work, I have it in several titles.
