Facebook And Watermarks

Been looking into a few groups on Facebook, joined a few and not lasted that long, got far too many personal problems to bother at the moment, I'm interested in what others think about some groups where they want people to put their work in the group without any watermarks?

I have enough problems just trying to take a bog standard photo in the UK, I'm not prepared to upload and have some prat nick my work, I've not joined any that stated no watermarks but just interested in more views.

I used to run a business on ebay and had photos nicked from there of all places, took this up with Ebay but they didn't want to know.

I was on an art group on fb and posted without watermarks because no one else did. Big mistake. Yes, people will copy them for their own use. I left the group but unfortunately, leaving a group does not remove the images you posted.

"I used to run a business on ebay and had photos nicked from there of all places, took this up with Ebay but they didn't want to know.'

That is because they know there is no way in the world that can be prevented. Those are very small images and they can not be used for much of anything.

That is price you pay for selling on the internet. Every single place you post images, it is the same problem and the watermark will not prevent anything.

Search the treads on Watermarks and copyright.

About everything in the world that can possible be said about the two issues has already been said about 100 times in those threads.

Make sure you upload small low res images that cannot be enlarged and used for much

You can delete the images you posted before you leave a group, Valerie. I never post an image to fb without a watermark.

I agree, no watermark, no upload.

By problems taking pictures in U.K do you mean the over-important security guard type people who will tell you what you are doing is illegal ? If so I've had similar problems, but I usually just say I am a professional photographer so I am fully conversant with the law about what I can or cannot take pictures of. I then invite them to call the police if they are not happy. This usually works.

For places like Facebook - that encourage sharing - I ALWAYS use a watermark with my name and my marketing URL - and I upload a small (low resolution) image.
For places like FAA - where I want to "sell" my work - I NEVER use a watermark. (...let the flames begin...)

I sit on the no watermark side of the fence too. I think it looks distracting and in reality won't stop anyone from stealing your work. The truth is a buyer won't steal your work and thief is never going to buy. On my website I put small pics with links to my AW and if I post anywhere else it is always a link from my AW. I have found my work in other places as well...but the only way to really be sure no one will take an image is just to not upload anything to the web.

As someone who has for years had his images stolen and used all over the place, trust me, you want some sort of watermark.

Last night I did a check and found my images all over the place. Commercial sites, places selling "meditation retreats" (that made me laugh). One guy even took my image and used it as a backdrop of a house he was selling!

I make mine unobtrusive and along the bottom. They can still be snipped off, but there are legal consequences for doing so if your work is registered.

interesting views, I'm not up for someone making money cash on my behalf, When i come across groups that doesn't want any watermarks i don't join, also i make sure my watermarks in are in place that will make someone work hard to nick them.

To me watermarks are not in the image anyway, if someone wants to buy anyone's work then they get a normal photo. i put a lot of time and effort in finding my photos so I'm not planing to give them away, if i want to give them away i will sell on a stock site.
