Best Least Expensive Pocket Digital Camera

Traveling to Rome and southern Europe for a few weeks and wish to take an inexpensive digital camera which if it got lost of picked it would not be such a loss. The camera is for my wife.
I would love any suggestions any suggestions?

There are a host of them out there, including the Sonys. But I don't think any of them take better photos than the Apple I-6 Phone. I'm sure someone will give better advice than I have.

My wife does not use an Apple phone but thanks Kev!

What's your budget? Nikon Coolpix A and Ricoh GR both have APS-C sensor and great lens, but fixed prime and no zoom. Coolpix A is selling for about $400 if you can still find it. I recently bought the Ricoh and just put it in the back pocket of my jeans. Will also fit front pocket provided your wide doesn't wear a catwoman suit. Might be overkill for someone just looking to take some holiday snaps though.

Look at the Panasonic Lumix line....I have the older version of this one and it's awesome and really pocket sized

That is a great deal by the way (although I have never purchased from buydig) Mine has Zeiss glass, not sure if the new ones do.

Love the Lumix line myself.

I think, no big camera brand can afford to deliver crap. But one thing is true, too: You get what you pay for.

... and a entry level DSLR with a kit lens from e.g. Nikon or Canon have a much better image quality than most similar priced point-and-shoots.

Samsung also has a line of cheaper compact and P&S cameras.

the Canon PowerShot ELPH runs from 16 MGP to 20 MPG and costs are between $100 and $200, plus I am sure a storage stick. They are small enough to fit easily into a pocket. I saw a refurbished one for $69 on the web.

I agree with the Lumix supporters, they are AWESOME! woot.com often has really good sales on them, we got both ours there (no affiliation).

Well She will get what ever I buy for her so on Saturday, tomorrow I will probably go out to Best Buy. My wife is a non-artist per se but she also in non- digital and computer( thanks for this!).

In Europe, my home stomping grounds. Anne is into the tours and willingly follows them. I am not into that and a camera of medial merit will do for her. Italy for me is sculpture workshops.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 10.1 MP Digital Camera

Used - under $150 on Amazon.

One thing to consider when traveling is all the different batteries and changers. If both cameras use the same batteries that would be a plus. I pack an outlel extender along with my International power adapter.

I have a Panasonic Lumix bridging camera which is wonderful, so I would certainly get a Lumix if I needed a pocket size one.

Most Lumix are waterproof correct ?
Just left my P & S out in the rain. Doh.

Have an incredible time on your trip.

Make sure you get one that can handle low light situation! You'll want to bump ISO up, and noisy pics suck.
Churches allow photos, but no flash. Same for some museums - some allow photography (no flash)
Also, make sure you CAN and know how to turn the flash off if you get a P/S

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

Yes, good advice Melany! And take a good compact tripod in a case with a shoulder strap so you can keep that shutter open!

^^Gorilla Pod^^

Thank you for your help. I've known a Gorilla pad but what's a "Gorilla Pod"?

Melany Sarafis

Seriously? They're great! Legs wrap around anything - trees, poles, etc. Small enough to fit in a bag and because you don't set it on the floor, you can often get away with using them in museums/churches (I simply set mine over a rail)

Pro tip: If you buy one, do yourself a favor and splurge for the one with the ballhead. don't go cheap. (you're welcome)

This is mine:

I would not choose any pocket camera without a build in viewfinder and a large zoom. Lumix and Sony meet my demands. And they are tiny in size.

Susan Maxwell Schmidt

Yes to Gorilla Pod too! I think they even make them for iPhones. We have a point & shoot-sized one.

Looks like Sony and Lumex is best.

Thing is my wife is no photographer or interested in it at an artistic level. I use Nikon D 90. Anne just shoots randomly and tourist style.

My big camera is a Nokia... When I don't have room for that, I take my little Samsung... They pack a LOT of power for well under $200. There's my two cents. ;-) Have fun on your trip!

Maybe your wife will be more interested when she has better equipment.

Looking for a waterproof one good around the beaches and jacuzzi. Heard ther was a Kodac that is.

Crystal Wightman

Just my 2 cents.

"Apple I-6 Phone" is not a camera. It's a phone.

Not everyone wants to be a "photographer" and become more interested if they had better equipment. Some people would like to just have a P&S for the sake of memories.

Nikon has a waterproof camera. Cool pix AW130

Very true Crystal! She wants to have some memory pics is all. No art. Not wanting to be known as a photographer or artist of any kind.
The best of this area in europe is already in books anywhere you look.

I like the Kodak Pix Pro WPI DSport Camera so far. It looks tough and is shock & water proof.
It has similar features as the Nikon but 1/3 the price wanted. She needs not anything more elaborate.
