Three Months In

Today marks three months of my membership on FAA and it seems reasonable to review and assess what I've learned in that time. A friend of mine had been a member for several months before I joined and I believe I enterd the organization with realistic expectations. Initially,I figured it would take at LEAST six months and at LEAST 1000 views before even looking for a sale. Then I learned about bots and I've reassessed the value of quantity of views. The six month incubation period I still believe is valid(I have sold a few tote bags and greeting cards to people who know me) The print sold to an unknown is still the benchmark, either that or a an image theft. I'm still looking at the value of groups and contests. There are some groups that have been useless .Some very active groups with consientious admins have something to offer. The value may not be in generating sales, but I've learned a ton just by being exposed to others' work,es[ecially well established artists with a sales record.
That last point leads me to the best part of the FAA experience. The exposure to true artists, professionals and craftpeople has taught me that I can sell my work to a particular market. I don't see myself competing in the gallery/collector world yet. My work is better suited to the greeting cards, tote bags, throw pillows, etc.Knowing this allows me to develop a marketing plan to attract those customers. We'll see what the next few months to a year bring and I must say that I've found the last three monts very energizing, educational and best of all,FUN!

Nice post, Paul! It's good to see someone with realistic, yet positive expectations. The short version is that what you get out of FAA is entirely dependent on what you put into it; great artwork, lots of marketing, and sometimes some patience helps too. ;)

all you need is 1 view to get a sale. marketing brings the numbers up though. contests and groups just spread the images to more eyes. and it doesn't hurt to enter them. always start people in gallery mode. and bulk up your keywords. there were some images that only had 2 words on it.

Love your enthusiasm and your patience! Welcome aboard and best of luck to you!

You mentioned groups and bots and views but nothing about marketing outside FAA.

I am not one of those that thinks that yours or anyone's art has to sit and "soak" or "percolate" or any of the other terms I see here.

I think sales are a direct reaction to advertising and marketing your work. I believe in the concept of the longer you wait the more people will find you and the more apt you are to sell something. But there is a better way, imho.

Marketing and advertising is a much better way to go. When you get your images in front of buyers that want to buy, they don't care if you "paid your dues" by being a member for any length of time.

Between Floyd and Mike you will get an education. I should know, but branch out to YouTube
and look up how to market products.

Lookup Hugh MacFarlane. His many short videos on marketing are generic, but they will give you a lot of insight.

Goodl luck, to many sales,

Dave

PS the more images you have the more prints you can sell, dont discount that avenue so fast. It is more lucrative.

Cynthis, did you mean LOTS of patience? :)

Mike, thanks for taking the time to look at my site. I've been reading your marketing tips from the beginning. My early posts are very weak on keywords and I'm going back and punching them up.

When I read 'Three Months In' I thought: oh no, again one of this unrealistic dreamdancers wondering why they still are not famous.

But then I read Your realistic post!
Congratulation for this realism!
