Has anyone discovered a "sweet spot" when offering limited time promotions? I've been running them but no takers. Wondering if anyone has any incite on a good size and price point.

I've tried all sizes, varied price points, and subject matter, with no takers. I just posted two the other day after a long hiatus of not trying it.

I've been picking something in the middle for sizes. 8x10 IMO is too small for a canvas. Trying to keep the price under $100.
I wish squares were available.

never had a single sale of them. tried popular designs, different prices. i gave up.

I did one, of my most popular image in an 18 x 24 (I think). No takers, but I did sell well the week that I offered the promotion, so there's that.

Maybe offering large size sells a small one? DK. At least it give one something to promote.

Tried, failed, lost interest. Moved on to what works.
I think if you promote the hell of them they may sell. But why would I want to promoter the hell out of a discounted piece?
Just promote the full price piece makes more sense to me.

Its called a lost leader. FAA should put them front and center. You're limited to three at a time. Most of the time you won't match what the buyer is looking for so they might take a look at the rest of your gallery. For the bargain hunters it would give them a chance to purchase something they wouldn't other wise.
The limited nature of the offers would add to impulse purchases.
The competitor with the three letter name bombards me daily with savings offers.

I've sold a couple. Ages ago. Large I think 24x36 maybe. Been my experienve that people want big when they buy canvas.

"Its called a lost leader. "
Only if you are willing to sell it at a loss. I personally see no reason to do that. I am selling okay without having to do that.
I have had as many as 18 Limited time offers running at one time for months and months and months.
I used my best selling images, my most viewed images and about every thing I can think of on how to get one of these sold.
I have not tried selling one at a loss. Not going to either.
I agree with David, we do not want them front and center. Why would we want to see FAA leading people to thousands and thousands of other people's "sales"?
Chances are what's being offered isn't what someone will want but in the event it is, it may get the first sale from then and get them comfortable buying from the site.
I don't think its possible for an artist to sell something on here for a loss.
The theme here has always been raise you prices and you will sell more. Now we are saying raise your prices but run sales all the time, like Wal-Mart does?
I don't run sales, ever as a general rule.
The only reason I was trying the Limited Time Promotions is because I was told that those email blasts FAA sends out are chosen at random. If you had any reasonable chance of being in one of those, that could quite possible be a very good thing for promoting ones name or gallery.

"I don't think its possible for an artist to sell something on here for a loss."
Well, ya, I guess I would have to agree what that. So that certainly eliminates the loss leader concept. lol
But you could discount it to zero profit in the spirit of the same concept.
Not suggesting anyone does that. I will not for sure.

I am amused.....can we put a negative sign in front of our markups now?
Ed, the site is geared to the collections, products, and search in pretty much that order. Adding loss leaders in front of all
of that? No.

"I've sold 10-15 at 24x36 with about a $100 markup."
Well done! :-)
Adam, how did you do that?
Did you get chosen for one of the email campaigns or do anything special in the way of advertising?
I was in two FAA email blasts a couple years ago but have sold some that were not in those emails.
Just like all sales on FAA I have no idea how people found them.
That lack of tracking is why most of my marketing is just handing out biz cards in the field. Better to do tgat and build up a portfolio than spend time doing anything that takes much time, effort or cash online when there's no way to know what or if it's working.

I've sold a few limited time promotions! It looks like I will be having a client ordering 3 24" by 36" from limited time promotion sometime in the future!

Parker,
Congrats. It sounds like you guide your client to the promotion? Right?
It does not sound like the client found the promotion on his own.

The only way they are truly effective is if FAA decides to blast yours out to their thousands of email subscribers. That has happened twice to me and the results were very profound.

Thanks Design Turnpike - sometimes you need a little rocket blast to jump start your career.
.....
A single limited promotion goes to 25 or less collectors. It has nothing to do the rest of your pricing strategy.
...
Yes in the true sense of the word a "lost leader" is selling at below cost. This isn't possible or recommended. But what is your cost? $100 mark up might be a loss if you had to sleep in your car for a month to get the shot.

Featuring limited promotions is a win win. Artist trades promotion in exchange for less profit on x number of sales. FAA gets more sales, generates some excitement.
Those who don't want to participate can just sit back and wait for sales to appear. Its totally optional.

Thanks, Edward. I actually found that in the promotion information - should have read everything earlier :) And I found the newsletter sign-up place, too, at the bottom right of any main page (thanks to whoever it was who said it was in the "footer" - didn't know that web page term but figured it out). And I've found the link to current LTP's under the Shop tab. That takes care of my questions and I've learned a lot from this discussion.

I guess for Special Promotions to work, we need to promote them.
One way could be to bring the link to the fore on our Artist Websites.
Some of the 'Limited Time Promotions' are actually more expensive than the 'Click for Larger View' price for the same size.

I don't expect anyone will ever see this - but I have done a few promotions that probably won't sell. It isn't that easy for people to find them on your artist website; but you can stick 'em up in other social media places or your own website.

I have three up just now. I feel the fairly traditional and simple still life of a wooden bowl filled with red apples and one green apple out in front would have more appeal for a woman. But then I have two that are more "masculine" in subject, an old wooden crate filled with vintage carpenter's saws and a close-up of a disc brake assembly that would also have appeal to someone with more of an industrial bent.

LOL Andrew. I don't think anyone does, certainly not without promoting the heck out of them. One "problem" is that they used to be easy to find here at FAA and now they are absolutely buried. When I go to a site to buy something and I'm just kind of looking around, I always look for a "SALE" section - I doubt I'd ever get to or spot the Limited Time Promotion buttons. But they are easy to do and I don't see that they hurt me (especially if no one ever sees them LOL), so I try to keep three up.

CJ Anderson and I at Christmas did a LTP and we saw some success with them. We hit it just right when FAA was offering free shipping, and they moved quite well. We also as a group promoted them via outside FAA. The ones that sold well were kept under the 100.00 mark. There were a couple of folks that sold not only the LTP, but some of their other work not on sale. So they do work and I think would be even more possible if in the front of FAA they have "Sales". I think this would definitely increase their popularity.
We have LTP on now, but the success rate has been disappointing.
You guys and your groups did an amazing job promoting them, Sydne - and Vickie and her group, too.
Thank you Niki, it was fun and more fun when folks got sales and participated. Our whole idea was if you promoted them via groups, you would get your work seen by a wider audience. It also helped it was Christmas, which I think more buyers were in the market for good deals.
Haven't sold one yet but I like the concept. Limited time, limited number and a specific image.
The problem with 50 percent off everything sales is people wonder how you are able to offer such a big discount. Aren't you confident of your pricing? Are you over priced? Either that or they think - gee this artist is rather desperate.
I'd rather price wisely and stick to it.
The LTP is a way to attract some attention. It might not be the image people are looking for but it brings them in for a look.
It does hopefully bring them in for a look-about, and a possible sale! LTP's are a tool, but like all our work here on FAA you have to promote them, there is the deal.
Pricing is a big deal, and as I mentioned before, keeping your price under $100.00 was where most people made the sales. Another thing, how many are being offered, I suggest 3 to 5 LTP's. It gives more of an urgency for a potential buyer to make the decision to buy, before they are all gone.
Not sure if urgency has much to do with it unless you have buyers standing in line to purchase.

I do think Sydne has a point. Having 10 "art pieces" for sale at a "discount" diminishes something - the piece, the urgency, the sense of a good buy? I tend to go with 3. I've never sold even one so it's not as if I'm losing sales by offering only 3 instead of 10. And I usually go with the 11x14 size which I can keep well under $100, but that is sooo limiting in terms of ratio. You have to go 24x36 (when it's even available) to get a 2:3 ratio to display nicely. Some crop okay, but too many of mine do not.
So, that being said . . . here's my new one. It works with a squarer crop, but I much prefer it like this.

Very nice Niki! Good luck to you!
You never know Ed, but I do know last Christmas one person sold 2 out of her three, and she may have sold all three! Whether it was due to urgency of only offering 3 for sale, it worked out well for her.
