Plant Identification

I need help identifying a plant key wording purposes. I'm in Rhode Island and took the photo on the edge of a meadow surrounded by a woodland area if that helps.

Any ideas? I'm not really getting anywhere with google image searches.

Looks like thistle variety. Pick up Peterson's Guide To Medicinal Plants or Wild Plants of the Northeast or something along that. They're good guide for identifying when out in the fields and woods. Fits into a backpack.

go to google.. click on image search.. click on the camera icon... upload your image and see what google finds for you... ;O)

Thanks everyone! Definitely some kind of Thistle. I can probably google image it now that I have a better starting point.

I did see tons of thistle in the area, but it was at an earlier stage. It had never even occurred to me that this was thistle that was further along.

If not I'll post in the flower id thread.
