The Story Of Three Pictures: Should I Be Listing Them?

I recently put three pictures on my site. I know I like one of them, but the other two, I'm not sure of. Here they are and I will put on my big girl pants and listen to what my fellow artists think of the other two.

1. I like this picture and it makes me happy. I am comparing the other two to it.

2. This picture also makes me happy. I thought it was a throw-a-way. I was really trying to capture the licence plate of the car ahead of me, but when I was going through the snaps I just loved the colors. But it's just a picture of rain on a windshield. It that really art?

3. And finally this picture. It's a straight photograph, mostly. Because when you blow it up the water is filled with stars and the sand looks like gold and most editing would destroy that. It is a nice large picture, but it doesn't really show well unless it is large. So, should this be for sale on my site? It's magical up close, but..... I'm going more and more to heavily edited and filtered work and this is almost a straight photograph. Should I just take it off and post it out to my travel photography group instead?

“Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”

― Andy Warhol

Hi, Susan,

A late night (in my part of the world) answer in four parts:

Part 1. If you like the work, and think it's a quality image, that's all that matters. (See the quote in Angelina's post, above.)

Part 2. Unless multiple pieces are part of a related series, what's the point of comparing them to one another? (Hint -- There is no point in comparing them.)

Part 3. "... just a picture of rain on a windshield. Is that really art?"

Part 4. There's no rule saying you must offer every image in every size. Only looks good at larger sizes? Only offer it for sale at larger sizes!

Oops -- Part 4b. My portfolio is a mixture of heavily edited photosgraphic art, straight and lightly-edited photos, fractals, and straight digital work. As long as your images are well-organized, the only limits are limits you place on yourself.

That is all. ;-)

PS -- I saw a recent post saying you're moving back to the U.S. Welcome home!

As an artist I now live by what Warhol said...and what Wendy said makes sense.

i don't like the last one because its crooked and blinding and is too soft looking for me. i mostly see it as a washed out area. maybe ran through a painter. but i have seen night bokeh shots like that.

I agree that number one is awesome...makes me feel happy too!

The second one makes me think of Christmas...It has a festive feel to it. So I'd leave it as often art/photos give people a "feeling" and they buy.

The third one I do not care for. Too much glare, the boat is weirdly soft and it's all a bit crooked.

"It that really art?"

"I like this picture and it makes me happy."

"I just loved the colors."

"the water is filled with stars and the sand looks like gold"

Yes. It is art. You gave all your reasons. That's good enough. Everyone who views it will decide for themselves. The point isn't if everyone thinks it is art but if they feel the same as you about them. That is why they buy.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You don't know what someone else will see in your image. I had a bunch of my images that I was second-guessing all set to delete from my site, then my daughter picked one of them out for a tote bag and said she loved it! It is your art and your website. Go for it!!

Amen, Andy W. I like them all. The only thing that must be done is to straighten the horizon in the boat shot. Slanted horizons kill even the most beautiful images.

I think they are all nice, but I especially like number 2. I love shots like that. You never know what someone will be drawn to....

Thanks for your feedback, guys. I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. I still have doubts about the third picture. I did try hard to straighten it but sometimes different elements in a picture are catty wonkers with each other and you have to compromise. It will stay for one main reason. It was a hit on Flicker and the others weren't. Go figure. And Wendy, Love your truck in the rain. Thank you.
