Discount Codes

Could someone fill me in on the use of the discount codes?

if you want to run a sale, or someone says - i really want that, but i'm cheap and i want a discount, you give them a code. however the amount off only covers your side. and telling them that 50% is not really 50% is confusing.

you set the amount you want off in dollars or percent, how many times it can be used (each time covers any number of things ordered). how long its good for and i think one other thing. give the code, they use it at check out.

in general i don't use them unless i have to.

I use them as a thanks for an order, or sometimes I will generate one if I client asks for a small discount, but I always offer a dollar amount off.

As Mike said, the discount comes off your markup, and not off the cost of the production, so to offer a percentage is misleading to the customer when they do the math. I prefer to keep it simple.

You can end up giving away the profit on a product - for example a $10 off coupon might net you $0 profit on a phone case.

Can you limit the code by product or by size.

Like, 20% off on any canvas 24 x 36 or larger?

20% off on stretched canvas only?

Those kinds of things?

Never did a discount code.

I personally think it is kind of strange to say here is 20% off but it is not really 20% and then have to explain it.

I guess giving a flat amount off like Cynthia says would be okay. But not if you can not limit it to where you can't make zero or less.

the code is very not restrictive. its off everything.

i want it to be valid only if they buy X amount, but they don't have that. it would be nice to have it more flexible. the explanation thing looks weak, but i don't know how the system would work otherwise. the guess what it is amount is the best angle, yet still not.

I was looking for more info on this as well. If the code is a percentage off and the discount only comes off your profit the buyer is still getting a discount. So you are saying because they don't know your profit they can't estimate the final price. Confusing.

Here is my issue. Maybe you have some advice.

I was given the go ahead to put a large giclee in our community clubhouse. If anyone wants to order I would like to offer them a discount. I don't know the best way to do that. I guess I could order it myself and just ask them to pay me directly but I would rather they order themselves.
