September Fall Is Near

Here is some interesting facts about Septmber; The name September comes from the old Roman word 'septem', which means seven, because in the Roman calendar it was the seventh month. The Anglo-Saxons called it Gerst monath (Barley month), because it was their time when they harvested barley to be made into their favourite drink - barley brew. They also called it Haefest monath, or Harvest month.
The Romans believed that the month of September was looked after by the god, Vulcan. As the god of the fire and forge they therefore expected September to be associated with fires, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

I love the month of September, it marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern hemisphere and the start of spring in the Southern hemisphere. Harvest time begins, trees start to turn colors ( except here in Hawaii ). September has three birth flowers: the forget-me-not, the morning glory and the aster. Forget-me-nots represent love and memories, asters represent love as well, and the morning glory represents unrequited love. These are all very passionate flowers.

The birth stone for the month is the sapphire. The sapphire represents clarity of thought, intuition, and peacefulness. In traditional medicine it is used to treat fevers and reduce inflammation. Sapphire reduces anxiety and procrastination and gives the wearer luck.

The best part of September is it's my birth month!

Interested info Darice, September is the first month of spring here in NZ, the trees are just starting to blossom and bud which is beautiful, looking forward to getting out and about exploring and finding more inspiration for my art :)
Happy birthday for this month :)

Lack of water has changed Chico, California into dry dead landscapes.
Lawns are no more, gravel, woodchips or dead weeds and dirt are the
new normal. Trees that normally loose it's leaves by November are
leafless now. Most of the trees look dead or nude.
Wildfires are everywhere.
It's a bleak September out here compared to your description
Darice.
We need rains and snow, I'm afraid winter won't turn this time around.

I hope everyones September is going your way.

Happy September everyone, I can't believe it is September already!! Aghh, time flies.

*Welcome Joanne, :) Love your art. A very interesting medium, painting on silk. Do you have any videos of your process?

*Debbie, so sorry about the severe climate change for your area, that is not good. As you say, it will probably take a few years of some wet weather to bring it back around. I was afraid we were headed that way until 5 days ago. We have had rain and severe weather here. The fire that has been burning the rain forest is pretty much over with. A lot of people without power after the almost hurricane strength winds. Hoping the winter brings a deep & strong snow pack back in the mountains.

*Darice, happy birthday month. I like that attitude, celebrate all month!

Just finished a painting. I will post it in a couple days. I have to get it scanned but not sure my local person can do it since it is larger. I'll have to be asking some opinions. It is my usual detailed watercolor style but I'm wondering if I can call it abstract also. You can help me when I can get the image uploaded to FAA.

Hope life is treating you all well.

Found you all.
Julie I do not think of your painting as abstract as IMO it is well defined and clearly representational of what you are intending to show. Just IMO but I think of abstract as non-representational.
Silk painting is gorgeous - love how ink/paint flows on silk. Will check out your work Joanne.
Happy hour everyone.

Thank you Julie, I don't have any videos just yet but my daughter has just asked me whether she can do a time lapse one for me from start of my art to end product so as soon as she is back on school holidays that will be our project together (she wants to get into movies) 😃 I also love your painting Julie, would have to agree with pat, your painting looks too real, I could Moore up a boat using that chain :) awesome!

Debbie, thank you for your kind words, they are pretty special :) I wish I could send some rain over to you, we've been having it pretty much everyday for the last three months, storms, gales, floods, miserable. Hopefully now with autumn on its way the weather will get better for you guys over there.

OMGOSH! Your rusty heavy chain resting on top of those
rocks is like looking at a photograph Julie!:)!
Beautifully done!
I don't know what category your creation
would identify as? I'm guessing maybe...

Realism;
style of painting dating from the 19th century, typified by Courbet, that makes a deliberate choice of everyday subject matter (Realisme). Also: the opposite of abstract or distorted (similar to naturalism). Also: in Greek Classical sculpture. work that is not stylized or idealized.

Visual art;
A broad category of artistic disciplines, encompassing the fine arts, some of the applied arts and certain modern art forms.

Watercolour Painting;
Uses a water-soluble painting medium. Watercolours are usually applied with brushes, but several other tools may also employed. The most common painting techniques are known as wet-on-dry and wet-on-wet, plus the dry brush techniques dry-on-dry and dry-on-wet. Watercolours can be removed while still wet, by blotting. When watercolour are made thicker, opaque and mixed with white, it is generally referred to as gouache. Thomas Girtin and JMW Turner were two great pioneers of the art form.

I Hi everyone, welcome Joanne.
Wonderful news about you sale Debbie ' CONGRATULATIONS '. Your painting is beautiful.

Julie, love your watercolour. So realistic! You could even call it a still life. Definitely not abstract.

Enjoyed reading your meaning of September Darice, very interesting.

It's spring here, rain has held off for a few days thank goodness. It has started to shower again this avo, but nothing like it was.

Hello to everyone else, hoping you're all having a great week

TY Joanne Debbie & Merrin and thank you for your honesty. I guess abstract will never be but maybe down the road some day. Thank you Debbie for the history & info, I would say I am definitely a "realism" artist.

I still find it so interesting to realize that we are opposite weather than some of you as we approach fall/winter and you spring/summer. I tend to live in my own little world in the "upper left" USA and find it fascinating to hear others talk about where they live. Thank you for sharing everyone!

Debbie, I just read you sold a painting, yeahhh!! :) So excited for you, it's such a wonderful feeling.

Darice & James, I hope you & the Hawaiian island's are holding up okay in all these hurricane's. How are you doing?

Debbie Chamberlin

Good morning and Good afternoon to everyone:)
Yup Julie, your painting of that heavey chain looks like you
could lift it from those beautiful rocks!
Your violet, that purple flower looks real too:)
I wouldn't worry to much what artistic catagory your painting
fits into. I was simply guessing.
Darice would know billions of answers to your questions
when it comes to art.

Hi Merrin:) Thank you:) I haven't had a painting or print sell
from FAA before. LOL, I made 8 bucks:)

Well, everyone, enjoy your day and evening:)

We have had quite a hurricane summer, I have lost count of how many have past by our islands, but we seem to be surviving the storms, it's the humidity they bring that is terrible. We have AC in Kimberly's office, so we have a refuge. We are getting quotes for central air now for the whole house. Fortunately the weather will change as winter approaches.

Joanne Oram

Hurricanes must be scary! We've had warnings of cyclones coming our way but luckily they haven't ever hit, seen a few water spouts near rangitoto Island just off Auckland and been though a mini tornadoe but hurricanes are something else altogether! Love your artworks by the way, stunning 🌺🌴🌻🎨😃

Good morning and happy Aloha Friday everyone!

James, there have been 11 hurricanes in the Pacific this season. I believe 7 or 8 of them were in our area. I don't mind dramatic weather but this humidity is the pits! I never knew i could sweat so much :-)

Julie, I didn't get a chance to comment about your painting. I'm sad you took if off the discussion. Since you got the answer you were looking for all I'll add is, That is one beautifully painted painting! Well done!

Hi Pat, you busy lady you, good to see you :-)

Merrin, I hope all your spring showers bring you lots of flowers.....hehehe that was kind of corny ;-)

Joanne, a time lapse video sounds like a fun project for you and your daughter. You'll have to share it with us when it's finished.

Debbie, have you seen this advertised there in Chico https://www.facebook.com/ParadiseRidgeChamberOfCommerce/photos/a.268609446556264.65426.260157734068102/884642348286301/?type=1&fref=nf&pnref=story It might be worth doing. Your art would have as good a chance as any in this contest. Why not give it a try?

So, to set the record straight about the "September info" I found most of that on google. I like looking up fun facts about things. I thought it would be fun to open each month's discussion with some of these fun facts.

Well guys, it's time for me to get some work done....art work that is...so I'll be saying "adios amigos" until next time. You all have a good day!

Hi Island Artsy Girl:)
Thank you very much for the link:)
I don't know if I'll have time to paint something for that
art contest. I'm painting a few south western designs along with another odd but interesting subject, Sasquatch paintings
for Sasquatch Chronicles. People who've witness Sasquatch/Bigfoot.
I'm a believer because our friends have witness them throughout there lives.

I agree with you, Julie's rusty chain painting is amazing!:)!
Enjoy your day:)

Morning all.
Weather seems the main issue everywhere and of course those poor refugees. I just read a book on this. Can't remember the exact name but something like the Moon is Low - it sure shed some new light on the situation for me. Tragic it is.
Just 2 days til we are off on vacation - going down east with Anna Banana and hubby. PEI for a few days then the Cape Breton trail which I have never seen.
btw - I have seen a Sasquatch - years ago - very weird.
Hope everyone has a great day. Weather, elections, tragedies ... the world is a crazy place.

Good morning everyone, the weather everywhere seems to have been weird. Here in Italy we are having to get our grass cut this week on our land - it should all be crispy brown and crackly to walk on but we have had so much rain it has grown up to our knees. Last year the region was hit by olive blight and all the olives were lost (ours included but we only have about 20 trees - our neighbour is an organic farmer and he has 10,000 trees, nothing from any of them). The local economy was heavily affected, the olive mills had nothing to do, the seasonal pickers and workers had no work, etc, right down the chain to the bottle manufacturers and hardware stores. We were told that the snow and ice in the winter would kill off the infestation - guess what, no snow! Almost unheard of where we are, three years ago we were snowed in for three weeks and had to have the snowplough to get us out. So, whilst we don't want to get snowed in for any long periods, some would be nice to redress the balance.

Look what the cat just dragged in,.....A big Hello/Aloha to everyone,...

Been since Aug 24th since my last post,....long time away from Darice's mother ship.

Almost lost the entire month of Septembrrrrrrr,...tonight's full moon must be pulling at me to come out of my cocoon.

I will jump outside at around 10 PM to see this super orange blood moon eclipse from my back porch patio,...
Already saw the big moonrise here tonight at 6;07PM,...happened before sunset and wasn't that brilliant so no pics taken.

I won't make excuses,...yes I have been busy,....but not sooooo busy to not write home here,.........shame on me for not at least saying hi along the way,...bad of me.

Read up on everyone's posts as best I could,...some big skips in content????,...good to play catch up at any rate on what you've all been and are doing.

Hi Joanne, nice meeting you here,....a late welcome to you from this absentee Mainer.

I love your silk paintings,...I like the inclusion of the VolksWagon busses and campers in several of your art pieces,...you must be an ex flower child at heart or from a past life???? They strike a familiar note with past memories from the 60's and 70's
Your New Zealand landscape is beautiful in your photos,....that Welcome Home driftwood surfers hut is to die for,...neat.

Deb I see you've gotten some long overdue sales of your fine art pieces,....Yellow Flowers,...Dream Island,...and the Madam Rose one too (which is spectacular),..(you gotta do a series with that Madam Rose theme Deb,....I'm serious,...anyway...a very very big congratulations to you,.....
FAA is just going to have to draw some savy buyers with good taste who recognize your great talent when they see it,...instead of these uneducated ones that are going and buying everyone else's art. Lowbrows,...that;s what they are,...so there.

What a lousy weather pattern for you Hawaii castaways,...hurricanes n' humidity n' all Darice and Jim.
Like Gilligan's Island,...but with all the luxury amenities and all the tropical weather thrown in to test your fortitude and stamina.
Far away from the madning crowds though.

Thank you Jim for your comments and promoting several of my newer images in your group and on this group too, appreciated muchly.
Am making headway on the Lubec fishing boat series done in high key,....tough to photograph the images when ideal conditions don't present themselves,...is much work and many hours involve to get it all balanced correct,...over 15 hours on the last one. Will make a nice set when completed,....Winter will not present the same opportunities unfortunately. But I have an inventory to work with over the Winter though.

Darice thank you also for featuring several of my images too,...muchly appreciated.

Just went outside,...the earth shadow is now 3/4 covering the moon,.....No blood red or orange fringes though,...just looks like an ordinary 1/4 moon that we have every other month,...whoopee ding. I was going to photograph it but,..cannot get that excited about seeing all the phases of the moon happenning withing 80 minutes time period.
I understand the significance of it,...but am not being very moved by the event otherwise.
Opppps,.....update,....Helen just called me outside,....moon is now over 3/4 covered by earths shadow and in an orange color permiates the shadow,...can see a fuzzy white little remaining of the non eclipsed portion of the moon,..at 10;22 right now. Totality is supposed to be at 10;30 or so,...then the reverse of everything will happen.
Nice to see just the same,.....I'll see it thru 86 year old eyes,....next time it happens,...or,...will either see it from ...Above,...or,...Below,...depending on where I spend eternity at,...hard telling,...not knowing???

Hey Pat,.....you asked about our land in PEI,....I believe it is in Belfast,....not too far from the ferry terminal.
We haven't contacted the Real Estate in PEI yet about selling it. But if you are interested,....and want more info,...will send you all the particulars about the lot,...just let me know,...I believe it's 6 acres if my memory serves me right.
You know what they say about land acrage,....they ain't making it anymore ;-))

For the past year I have been voluntarily attending monthly meetings of the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse Keepers Association meetings here in Lubec. out of curiosity of how they run it.
I've done soooo much photography at that lighthouse over the past several years,...I feel down right connected to that place,...a good part of my FAA portfolio is devoted to some of those images.
Anyway,...the organization just voted me onto the board of trustees two weeks ago,....I was floored not to mention honored to be accepted by everyone involved. I will be overseeing the art work that is displayed in the visitors center throughout the tourist season.
Am not much of a socializer or committee groupie,....but I feel right in my element at the lighthouse and love it's history and all significant about it. Soooo some of my time now involves that new endeavor,....
Squeezing a limited amount of time along with our magazine responsibilities adds to our tight deadline and time oriented lifestyle now.

Add to that,....a speculative industrial photography job I've been doing in town since July,....has kept me quite busy. Have been doing documentary images of a steel work marina project on days I could fine free time to be on site,..working in an engineering environment my entire working career,...it's yet another special interest opportunity I got involved with that ate up big pieces of my time recently.
The project was just completed and I;m pulling together almost 1000 images to submit to the engineering company doing the installation work.
Was a fun project just the same,.....similar to work I performed over mny working career .So things will be slowing down as cold weather approaches and less outdoor activities replace an active summer of interesting projects.

I'm only one people,...can stretch myself just soooo thin,....then its rest up and recharge the old batteries thing,....aint getting any younger as they say. In around and throughout all this I am still managing to get out with the cameras and search out subjects of interest.

I'm spending quite a few over nighters at the lighthouse when I can,...testing out new techniques and enjoying the solitude at the same time,...it's only 10 minutes from the house and easier to stay out,...rather than come home,...sleep for 2 or 3 hours,...and get up and go back again. I'm an odd ball that way.
So you get a feel for my time away over the last several months,....am ready to slow down a bit before the snow flies.

Had a very pleasant surprise the beginning of the month on a sale,...someone bought a 40 X 60 inch stretched canvas print of my " Light from Within" lighthouse image. I do not sell many pieces so was very surprised.

Another very unusual sale I just had,...
A woman purchased one of my lighthouse panoramas,....to have engraved on her husbands tomb stone.
Seem his last wish after passing in life,...was to have West Quoddy Head Lighthouse,...put on his headstone after dying.
The woman is going to send me photos of the completed stone.
I have no idea how this will be accomplished,....will let you know though???

I'm sorry I couldn't cover everything in this post,....Helen and I are in the closing hours of pulling the magazine together for the publishing house,...then I to get the subscriber database done within the week.

Am with you all in spirit and will jump back in soon this time.

Well Aloha Marty,

It's almost the end of the month... where have you been! Nice of you to stop in and deliver a FEW words. Better late than never. I can't be the only male in this group, we need you and your long posts.

Well on another subject, today we just missed yet another tropical storm which went just south of the Hawaiian islands. It has been raining all day with big wind gusts. I wish I could send you some of this rain Debbie.

I have been working on a new post on tastinghawaii.com about farm raised shrimp in Hawaii. I posted it yesterday and already have 50 hits. If you like shrimp you might want to read this post, plus the recipes are worth the look.

Hope you are keeping dry Darice.

That's wonderful Marty, congratulations on your special sale:)
Off to enjoy the evening, take care:)

Well welcome home Marty.....you have been missed. After reading all about your adventures I can understand why you've not been around. So did you end up with any blood moon photos? We were unable to see it here in Hawaii.

James, We had a lot of rain yesterday too. We did manage to get a bout 1/2 hour in on our garden. Just enough time to pull some weeds and chat with some neighbors who have a garden next to ours. I was loving the cooler weather and breezes last night.

Debbie, love the Halloween images! Halloween is my favorite event.

Hi Pat, I sure do enjoy seeing your work on facebook. You are one very talented lady!

Hard to believe there is just a few more days left in September. I guess when you lead a busy life time flies! Maybe I should spend more time at the beach....hehehe

Morning all.
Nice to hear all your words Marty. We did fall in love with PEI again when we were there. Who knows...only problem is the Maritime climate which you know about.
Working on some land dealings here (ha I sound like I know what I am doing but..) Long story shorter there is land adjacent to us in Perth that is for sale. It is pillaged land - used by a construction company and full of junk. We have this romantic notion of buying the land and letting it heal itself - go back to nature so to speak. We will see have another neighbour coming over this week to talk about this. Such a tragedy when beautiful land is pillaged.
Thanx Darice. I am soo into these little tiles. Been painting them like crazy and mounting them in threes in shadow boxes - they look awesome. Have some cheap xmas shows coming up (everything under $100) so hope I might sell some of these tiles. Going to do a few small xmas paintings as well. Funny small (minatuure) paintings are not really less work than large ones.
Anna B wild and woolly - this is a good thing - she had a tough summer with allergy issues.
I see Dorothy has been visiting Beth in Manchaster - photos on fb of her and Beths' pups! I was jealous. I would love to meet those pups (of course Beth too but the PUPS!!!!)

Hello all,

Marty, good to hear from you. Congratulations on the appointment to the Lighthouse Keepers Board of Trustees. MY husband's great grandfather was born in the Lighthouse at Burnt Point, NS, if I recall correctly. The Lubec lighthouse was one of my "have to" visits on a monthly basis when I did site visits to a CDC intimate partner violence prevention project there some years ago. It sounds like you are well immersed in Lubec. I can't imagine why your incredible photo prints do not sell. They are fine art above fine art in my view.

My best to all; I have much fall is coming house prep to do, so will wish everyone well and happy creating wherever you may be.

Hi everyone, I have been in the UK a week now living out of a hotel - the only decent meal I have had all week was in a real Italian restaurant! Everything vegetarian on offer round here is too much fat and/or too much carbohydrate! What I wouldn't give for a simple salad! I had a side salad in one place and got quite excited (LOL) but they had smothered it with some weird dressing that had a funny taste (really sweet and gooey) and I ended up not eating it. Thursday I will be driving down South to spend a long weekend with my parents - Mum says she has low fat mozarella, avocado, beefsteak tomatoes, lambs lettuce, olive oil and balsamic vinegar waiting for me! Sounds good to me!

As Pat says I visited Abbie in Manchester and we had a great day together - we have been planning it for ages and it was lovely. The dogs are so much bigger than my Barnie! Hannah really took a shine to me. Beautiful furry guys!

I miss my man and my babies - my older kitten Stevie Mouse is growing in front of my eyes (just got off Skype talking to her) and the little one Emmy is still not showing major improvements with her brain damage when the vet checks her but shows a definite improvement in the house where she is in familiar surroundings. She is about to start her third week of antibiotics and hopefully following that they will consider vaccinating her (her white blood count is too low currently). Until then she spends most of the day in a big cage away from the other cats. I can't help thinking if she could mix with Stevie Mouse it might be good stimulation for her.

Hello Dorothy,

When I travel I always order steamed veggies, veggie burger or skinless chicken.
I never eat pasta, potatoes, rice or salads.

Your kitty will be fine:) I have a cat with brain damage, born that way.
Cannot stand for to long, falls down and stands back up.
Her name is Floppy. She's a sweetie and loves everyone:)
She is 12 years old now, doing great:)
Floppy is best buds with my other three cats, all get along well together.

When you feel the time is right Dorothy, please allow your kitty freedom from her cage.
You'll be happy to see everything will be ok.

Dorothy Berry-Lound

Debbie, good to hear about Floppy. Emmy comes out four times a day to run around the living room, we have to move the other cats and the dog out and focus on her as she is not safe to be left. When she is vaccinated she can mix with the others, we just have to be patient!

I have never met her but expect she is like that with her family in real life as well. I am proud to be considered one of her friends.
Yes Dorothy I saw that Hannah took a shine to you. If I ever get back to Britain I intend to met those pups as well. Ms. Hannah has always captivated me - such a lovely soft looking girl. Abbie & I sort of shared the GS tragedy together. My beloved swampie (Jester) died just around the time her Max did. I got Anna Banana and she got Darcy & Hannah. Our pups are near the same in age. Good luck with your kitty...you sound like a good pet mum.

Good morning all,

Happy Birthday Darice :) I hope you have a wonderful celebration of the day of your birth today!

The last day of September, where has the time gone. I went to Costco yesterday and they had Christmas decorations, trees, etc out. I almost wanted to start throwing a temper tantrum and yell for them to put it all away, I am so not ready for any of that yet. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, just not before Thanksgiving.

Anyway, now that I got that out of my system... busy last day for me. End of month accounting and the quarterly taxes to get started for work. I will chat with you all next month ;)

Kia Ora Marty, pleased you like my silk paintings, my gran and grandad had vws so spent a lot of time in them as a child 😃

Happy belated birthday Darice I hope you had a lovely day 🎂

Luckily they haven't begun on Xmas here yet Julie, Halloween is the theme at the moment which I find a bit dull here, I live on the last street of my little town so rarely get any trick or treaters last year none so had to console myself by eating two massive bags of sweets 🍬🍭🍫 loving your Halloween inspired paintings Debbie.

Hope your visit to the uk goes well Dorothy and that you find some great places to eat out 🍇🌽🍒🍅

Unfortunately didn't get to see the blood moon here but did see one recently which was really cool, I kept my girls up til 3 in the morning to watch it, quite a cool experience 🌜
I love Xmas but still find it strange here in NZ as it's the peak of summer and haven't seen a flake of snow since arriving here eight years ago ❄️

Tonight is the awards show in Auckland so have all my fingers and toes crossed, I can't paint today in my studio due to a swollen thumb from a piece of cheese going up my nail! So instead will clean out my store room and wash my car outside.

See you all in October 🌎🌏🌍

Long ago my husband had a website built for me, it didn't work out.
It took three years for us to pay off the website builders.
The hole thing was a nightmare.
I'll never pay for someone to create a website again.

October is almost here:)

Hi Merrin, just took a quick look at your website on my iPad, looks really good I know how hard it is making a website I built my own and ended up looking a bit rubbishy so my hubby rebuilt the whole thing and it looks awesome 😃 Feel free to check it out www.naturespalette.co.nz the only suggestion I can really make for yours is that when you click on a picture you then lose the contact/bio/categories heading as there is no x box on the pic, but amazing paintings 😃

Happy Birthday, Darice. May your year ahead be full of the beauty and excitement you create in paintings and words. Blessings to you.

Merrin your website is gorgeous - well done you. I have never attempted such an thing. I actually dislike computers - so many hours spent when things go wrong. I want them just to work and I write me emails, check out art and facebook. I have no patience for spending hours trying to sort out problems (hubby does that!). Ditto tv controls etc.
Chilly willy here - may need a heavy jacket this morning ...when fall comes it comes with a vengance.
First day of October...yikes

Busy, busy here right now,...gotta meet a next week deadline crunch,....20 pounds into a 5 pound bag kinda busy!

If you want to get something done,....they say,....give it to someone who's always busy.

On another note.....

Read a very sad article just this morning......let me quote this and be sure I get it right......

My very best friend and dear drinking buddy,....had a very tragic accident this past weekend.

He got his finger caught ,.........in a,....wedding ring ;-(( ;-((

It's October!!!!!! Wow that was fast!

Thank you all for your birthday wishes. I worked at Village Gallery yesterday, had a great day in sales, even sold one of mine. Then Charlie took me to my favorite restaurant Lahaina Fish Company on Front Street. His cousin and another artist friend of ours joined us. I had a yummy tropical drink and a lovely dinner.

Marty, very funny joke. I'll be posting the new thread soon.....like right now.
