That's what it means - junk. It's the bits of rockets, lost nuts and bolts and spanners that slipped out of the astronauts' grasp, and just float around the Earth. Thousands of bits of rubbish, too expensive and too much of a hassle to collect.

They're all tracked by NASA, so that when when they launch a new rocket it doesn't collide with the potentially damaging bits of spacejunk and ruin a mission (and all the money, time and work that went into it)

Thanks Mark for your 'Junk' explanation.

Yes, I've heard about all that space-junk. Quite sad really, first we pollute Earth
now we do the same with a once spotless Space.

Not so cheerful,
Hartmut :-)

This discussion reminds me of one of my favorite late-night tunes -- Space Junk, by Wang Chung. I cue it on 'repeat' and listen for hours. It's great music for my virtual studio time. :-)

Space junk is a problem for maneuvering spacecraft in space, but space is more than littered already.

Not making excuses, but that is a reality.

Some times the junk falls to Earth.
