A Surprising Comment!

Why would someone stop by and comment on one of your images just to tell you that they didn't like it? Said they liked so much of my work but not that one. Is it customary to do that and I wonder why they felt the need to share that? Geesh .... Guess I'm just a little surprised. Has it ever happened to anyone else?

Seems downright rude to me. The least they could have done is PM you rather than make it a public comment.

Thanks David. That's what I thought too.

Are you participating in the "worst photo" discussion? Maybe they thought they should put their comment with the image as well as in the discussion.

There was a member a few years back who made horrid comments on others' work. He said things like, "Must have taken you five minutes to draw that." I hope he's not back!

lol! I've had a few odd comments and one where a fellow photog did not like my processing or styling of an image, thought it was better before I played with it...but his style doesn't use textures and stuff...I did leave his comment and he has left many nice comments on others!

Maybe member felt that a heartfelt comment was worth more than a generic pat on the back?

Melissa, I know another photog here who is very frank. I value his comments, actually. But not everybody can pull that off well.

Nikolyn ... no, I'm not participating in that thread. This was just a random drop in on one of my photos from someone who has made a couple of other comments in days past. Was probably a reciprocation from my commenting on her work but if I went to comment on someones work as a reciprocation, I would find something I *liked* to comment on and not comment on something I *didn't* like. Just thought it was an odd thing to do. lol .. Strange ....

Dean ... I'm all for heartfelt comments and honesty ... even brutal honesty ... if it's asked for like in a critique or something. I thought it was weird to look for something to *not* like in someone's gallery is all. :)

...that's not how it works...that's not how any of this works! lol! sorry just reminded me of this saying...

Lol, Rowena. I was going to say that in my original post. Thanks for sharing the video.

I guess not, Melissa. I'm learning something new every day about how all of this works. :)

just another reason to read your updates... so you can take out the garbage.

Well the rule here is that only kind comments are accepted. Maybe the commenter wasn't aware of this. No biggie really, just delete the comment. If he becomes a serial commenter then that's a whole different story.

Nancy ... Dean .... Nope, I'll leave the comment in case it happens again. If it becomes a habit, I'll report it.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Just screenshot and delete

Someone commented, critiqued it and told me how they thought I could improve it on one of mine! I thanked them for their visit...and have no intention of changing my image.

i get that in facebook sometimes.... mike i love all of your work, mostly the bible quotes.... but i really hate the doll murdering each other....

it would be nice if they keep their thoughts to themselves, why they feel they have to say anything is beyond me. and its not like they bought either one.

My attitude with that comment would be a quick "Screw you!" as I delete the comment and then go on with my life not giving it another thought. I worry about a lot of things. Worrying about thins I have no real control over and shouldn't be that important to me in the first place drains what little energy I have straight out.

I get negative comments from time to time on all platforms. I just delete them. It isn't that I cannot take criticism....13+ years selling my work online and I've had to grow a really thick skin! It is that I am on FAA to sell my artwork to those that want to buy it. I am not here looking for feedback from fellow artists (unless I specifically ask). So I also find it rude because this is a commercial site where we are all trying to sell something. It's like trying to sabotage someone else. No one would want a potential buyer to read a negative comment. You are a total arse if you leave a negative comment on someone else's sales page. Period.

I would just sigh, delete it and move on.

However, to play Devil's Advocate here, it is a "comment" field and not a "praise" field ;-)

I am not really sure that there is a lot of value in the comments anyway as many (most?) are simply generated by other members in a reciprocating manner as they are under the impression that the number of comments impacts the search ranking.

Just sayin' ;-)

I think its rare. But consider it does happen to vendors on large sites like A. At least you have the opportunity to delete. "Constructive" feedback should be via PM and even then you are risking a backlash.

Better not to critique unless someone asks. Although I would certainly appreciate any glaring mistakes on my stuff - dust spots, wrong location, excessive noise I missed or whatever.

....

There is another type of commenter I've noticed. The ones who leave the same comment on every image. I think they expect some good fortune will rub off on them if they comment. They just pick random images and say "great"

Some people forget this is a sales site and don't think about how that comment can have a negative impact.

I just erase them.

I think it's weird to leave such a comment without a request for critique. But the comment doesn't sound like much of a critique either, just "I don't like it" and that's it? I would take it with a grain of salt and then check the source's work. If the offender's work isn't something I can learn from I'd just delete the comment because you don't want the negative nature of the comment turning a potential buy away.

Abbie ... done!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I certainly don't mind constructive criticism, whether asked for or not but I'd appreciate doing it in a PM. I just thought it a little weird to search out an image with the purpose of leaving a negative comment. Believe me, I do have my feathers oiled. :) Thanks again.
