Yupp, I would scramble.

I loved hurricanes as a kid almost as much as I hate them now, though, they are still a rush to me.

Pretty much Joy....I am from Bradenton/Sarasota and we are supposed to close on a home in Venice on Sept. 23...hope everything stays in one piece!

I have a feeling it's going to track eastward too. I don't live on the coast anymore but I have family in Myrtle Beach, SC. I hope that wherever it lands it doesn't cause too much damage. That said, hopefully it will also suck out this nasty humid weather we've been having. It's always beautiful after a hurricane goes through.

Stay Safe. I haven't experienced a hurricane, but did experience Tropical Storm Debby at St. Pete Beach in Florida in 2012 while on vacation. That went on for days because it stalled in the Gulf of Mexico. I was so tired of the wind and flooding. Hope it weekens up for you. Be careful.

Thanks all...We will keep a close eye on it....Hopefully it will track East and spin out and not do any damage!

Stay safe Sharon!

We here in Hawaii, have two hurricanes heading our way. The first one is on track to reach us Sunday/Monday. These are the 7th and 8th hurricanes we've had since the beginning of the season. Ther has been 10 total in the Pacific.

Sharon Cummings

At least she isn't predicted to be a Hurricane anymore. :) You stay safe too Darice!

Everyone keep safe in Florida and Hawaii and our fellow members who are fighting blazes in Pacific north west.

We all have been keeping a close eye out including New Orleans which is having it 10 anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Hopefully it will not get anywhere near the higher than normal temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico.....Sharron as well all know along the continental United States every has to be on guard during hurricane season. The high pressure which had settle over the Atlantic and southern united sates may be weakening and a low pressure will not venture to a high pressure, Hopefully it will build but if it does I beam afraid as days go by because of the direction winds of the high pressure the track will slowly be moved westward......

I remember Tampa so well, took many photos I had a long time friend now deceased, she lived in in Bradenton and owned of the Bradenton and Tampa community's top leading landscape business in that area, her son now runs the business. Years ago I performed at the Theatre of Performing Arts it was such a memorable trip.

It was the week of July 4th and remember how humid the area was we thought more so than New Orleans.

I am also assuming your family just in the event of have evac and prepared to leave. Hoping for the best for everyone in Florida.

Cheers, Michael Hoard Principal Actor, Artist and Photographer.

Definitely have plans! I've been a Floridian for 47 years....Have seen some nasty storms and my share of hurricane's. We've always been smart and stayed safe. Luckily where we are now is higher ground and a bunch of solid steel/concrete buildings (USF) where the Hubby works are 2 minutes away. :)

Sharon, the season last til November hopefully no one will be effected. I personally think the high pressure is weakening but if builds strength and nudges more westward the panhandle could be targeted......and though it just tropical those at times can be more damaging than the winds themselves. Our top weather meteorologist have shown that exact path, its based on the European Data models

Tomorrow just so happens to be the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina August 29 President Obama was visited the city yesterday, and we have also 3 ex presidents in town, President Bush and President Clinton. They are all here taking part of dedications and continued support of us and the resilient efforts of the citizens who continued rebuilding of New Orleans and coastal areas equally affected. I lived through it personally in the weather preceding the storm in the Gulf of Mexico a night from hell and back as the large exploration boat I was chef on had to get to safe harbor and go to Morgan City, LA west of New Orleans. Personally I remember Hurricane Audrey, Betsy, Camille, and Hurricane Katrina and experienced the aftermath of destruction from all those major hurricanes. I personally think when Hurricane Andrew hit southern Florida that was the initial wake up call no community should ever have to be put in that position of the efforts from the American Government. And the outpouring of everyone here in New Orleans and the entire country we can not forget Hurricane Sandy, these unprecedented forces of nature effect each and everyone of us.

And the unthinkable while I was employed as head Steward (chef on oil production platforms) what was considered as a minimum tropical depression formed just miles from the Shell Platform I was on at the time. Because we were unable to evac due to weather conditions at the heliport and everyone securing ports. Everyone on that platform were stranded on the rig and had to ride the storm out just miles of formation which was classified by the National Weather Administration as a Hurricane. Seas of near 20 ft swells and higher slammed the platform throughout the night. we pretty much thought we would all die. Because of the nature of the platform drilling operations the control center for the platform had to keep the flare let and release any pressure building up below the sea floor. The heat generated from the flare which traveled over the platform and out over the water from the wind velocity actually melted some areas of the living quarter located on the upper level of the platform. The roar and size of the flare would compare to the space shuttle launch. I actually have a still photo in my gallery. I have video coverage of what we all had experienced on the platform.

Keeping you guys in my thoughts,

Cheers, Michael Hoard Principal Actor, Artist and Photographer

Hurricanes suck. I remember after Hugo being without power for a month and having 11 trees on my house, and over 900 down on the property where my folks live. I am glad we spent the night with my Grandmother on a less tree filled track of land. :)

You Guys be safe!

Most just give us some wind and rain...Andrew affected my Mom. She had to evacuate an entire assisted living facility!

Michael Hoard

As you remember Andrew was something no one had ever seen the aftermath of such destruction. Its etched in all our minds who lived through it or news coverage. Everyone in the path of Andrew without question new in advance the unimaginable and set forth code enforcements with building designs to perhaps withstand the forces of nature.. I was one of many who remained behind here in New Orleans for Hurricane Andrew and being head Saute Chef at world famous Pat O"Brians remained behind we all in shocked and saw what could have been the consequences if New Orleans had a direct hit. I remained behind to be with a long time 65 year old friend at the time and we both rode out the effects of Hurricane Andrew in her three story Grand Victorian in the lower garden district. Living just blocks away I too at the time was renovating a Grand Victorian and decided to walk to her house just blocks away instead of taking my Jeep I was the only person of just a few who remained behind and took photos of world famous St. Charles Avenue no cars in sight and so eerie . The city was already in curfew mode and fortunate I was not stopped never once saw any police or anyone patrolling the street in route to her home. Its all in retrospect but the initial minute memory lingers prior and post natural diasters.

Sharon,

I'm just north of Orlando and so looks like we've got a nice big bulls eye hanging over the map! Don't think this will be anything big, like 2004-2005 hurricanes, seems like more of a rain event than a real hurricane, according to the Weather Channel an hour ago. But I would get stuff shipped, just in case the carriers decide to skip a day or two.

Give it another day or two, once it gets through those mountains and Cuba and if anything left, "might" grow back to a Tropical Storm, but I still doubt it,

Michael Hoard

Rich I know yourself have experienced the storms and perhaps some which did not effect us. It does take its toll prior and post to be prepared just have necessary supplies if needed. When tropical storm Isaac struck just recently two or three years ago there were residences without power for a month a very minimal tropical storm, no structural damage what I always thought odd the city did not check power lines around the massive oaks. It was the branches falling on the power lines. Oak trees are quite beautiful but yet they are extremely brittle in just a tropical storm and can cause major issues with electricity, pines in your case in Florida pretty much same issues. Fortunately were I live the neighborhood is on the same grid as downtown. For that storm many decided to remain and that was due to all other false evacuations, it was not a mandatory evac but some residents decided to ride the minimum storm out. And another factor residents do have a sense of security now with the billion of dollar additional levees built surrounding communities east and south of the city. In fact just near New Orleans is one of the largest in the world pumping stations ever built. I have a 4th floor suite facing downtown and watch during the night just about all power in the surrounding areas go black.

Stay safe everyone! Hopefully she will blow out to the ocean. Every year it's pins and needles June - November. At least you all get some lead time. They're working on a system now to give us like a 10 second warning of an earthquake. They can't do better than 10 seconds....just enough time to get yourself under the desk!

Michael Hoard

Joy, and I am certain as we deal with the forces of nature, it must be unnerving for you as well. As you mentioned everyone should be prepared for the worst scenarios My sister lives in Riverside CA the typical design up in the hills. Her first home they designed and hence moved and it was a gift to their daughter and they built a second near by. There homes were spared during the fires years ago. Because there homes are higher up they wathed he fires move through the valley below... I asked her in the event of a major quake was she actually prepared she told me yes and she had a year supply of food in the event of a major earthquake event to provide for her family and nearby neighbors. Have you had any real life scares from minor tremors?

I have never experienced an earth quake but have experienced two tornados you unexpected watch everything around you move through the air. A minor tornado took place on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge back in 76 there was no warning except for the sound of the freight train and viewing one of those large dumpsters fly by the window, I saw it first and yelled for everyone to get to the kitchen now the center of the restaurant I was working at the time. After the twister moved on we all went outside and the entire roof peeled away cars moved as if toys but the restaurant did not take a direct hit. It did skip over campus dorms and lifted all the cars as if play toys and turned them over and tops of trees snapped off.

Hugo was not a pleasant time for us in South Carolina, even where I lived then in Lancaster, just south of Charlotte, we were getting hurricane force winds. Lost almost 30 trees in the yard but luckly only one clipped the house. Out of power for two weeks. Still way luckier than some. Latest projections seem to have it brushing us with mostly rain.

Joy McKenzie

Michael, I haven't been through any of the major ones...I moved here like 7 years after Northridge. But we had a 4.0 just last week...on the Hayward Fault...but we felt it here in the city. By the time I got to my desk it was over. The first one I felt when I first moved here from Boston nearly gave me a heart attack. I'm not used to the temblors...you can never get used to that feeling...but I know what to do, and if one is going to live here, you just have to expect it. And if it's the Big One...you just pray you survive. Always good to be as prepared as you can be.

We're just south of you in Bradenton/Sarasota, Sharon. IF the storm survives Cuba's mountains, we might get some tropical weather but like Rich said, probably be more of a rain event. These fickle things are so unpredictable though ... you just never know. Husband just went out to get a couple more cases of water and extra batteries but we pretty much stay stocked up all year with most stuff.

Joy ... earthquakes are something I don't think I could ever get used to. YIKES! I visited San Francisco many years ago and was a nervous wreck the entire time I was there. At least we have some kind of warning with the hurricanes.

I lived thru the summer from hell, 2004. Charley brought a giant oak tree into my dining room, and destroyed my inlaws' entire house plus their two cars, around the corner from us. Followed immediately of course by his buddies Frances, Jean and Ivan, who dumped tons of water into the giant hole in our roof. I am not eager to live through another one.

As of the latest projection it looks like landfall in Pinellas area--and this one has shifted quite a bit in the last 24 hours. But it has still never been upgraded to hurricane, and it will likely break up a bit over the island mountains first. I think mostly we are concerned with tornadoes and wind gusts bringing trees down and taking out power.

Valerie Reeves

Sharon...I remember Elena, too! We lived right on the water. When we came back home after being evacuated, the water line in every room of our house showed water two feet up. I grew up on St Pete Beach and that was the one and only time we ever evacuated. My parents evacuated from there to my house in Winter Park during Charley...we in the center of the state had WAY more damage than they had on the beach.

Michael,

Yes, I've been through a few and the year, 2004 was the worst time in my life. We had 110 mile an hour winds in our backyard, sustained winds, with gusts higher. No power for 7 days, in Mid-August, and our days were dragging broken trees, branches, fences, etc. to the front and piling them up, over our heads. Then, we'd shower and go wait in lines, for free ice. Then back and clean trash again. Terrible times and VERY depressing. We had 4 Hurricanes that year and 3 that took out out power, about 4-6 weeks, right after another!

Don't think I could get through that again, now being 66,

Wait until Sunday and we'll ALL know where and what's coming. Some models, show it heading up to the Big Easy!

Our local news just report south to northwest flow from the Yucatan and with that remnant of the frontal boundaries it will steer the storm north and north east. Remember is has yet to pass over Cuba and with all the factors they are expecting a perhaps tropical storm. She also further said hopefully this will be the case and just keep a watch out for any further developments. Weather conditions do change you can see the trough of winds and weather moving from the south to north east.... If the warm currents near Florida help intensify just depends but way too much upper level winds and Hurricanes do not stand a chance to strengthen from dry air, high pressures and upper winds. I think Florida is going to appreciate some tropical winds and rain.

Good Luck.

I have lived in Florida since 1974, I have experienced many hurricanes and a direct hit from hurricane Andrew in 1992 losing my home and much more. I have never heard of a state of emergency declared 3 days before a storm is projected to possibly approach and before any hurricane watch or hurricane warnings being issued, what's changed? or is this just another case of overreacting and sensationalism?

I think it might miss us- Pensacola Here. I remember a little of Fredrick as a child but Ivan was by far the worse experience for me (2004). I think this one will fizzle out for the most part..(fingers crossed)

Mario,

Our illustrious governor of CT last winter declared a state of emergency just as a great snow storm approached.
He shut the roads the whole bit. Shut down the entire state.

We got one inch. Boy was he sorry. No other governor had ever shut down the state in advance.
Priceless.

Update, our 10:00 pm reported yes the storm does now seem to have nudged a bit westward off the coast of Florida. The National Hurricane center is not issuing any warnings not until they see exactly what inner action with Cuba and importantly to keep monitoring any updates which may be released. They also mention steering currents this is also important factors if in fact what becomes of a tropical depression or tropical wave. The two most important features are the upper wind current and water temperature what can be just a wave or tropical depression can turn into a monster hurricane such as Hurricane Katrina. Something noticeable which has changed over the years is scientific research with the storm and the news meteorologist some to hype the awareness and others are do the most professional job in giving us all the updates.
