The Windows 10 Experience

This is not for addressing problems with installation or upgrades, but for discussion of compatibility issues. If you are using Windows 10 are there problems with any photo editing software?
Picasa, Photoshop Elements, NIK, etc.

What about email programs: Outlook, Gmail etc

What are the perks of Windows 10?

I like Win 10 so far. I have only had one compatibility problem with a very old accounting program that I should have gotten rid of years ago anyway. All of my email works fine, Adobe Illustrator CS5 and Lightroom5 are working well. Win 10 is a whole lot better organized than Win 8.1 that I did have. It's much easier to find settings and I like the Start Menu.

Been using Windows 10 for a month or so and haven't had any problems as a matter of fact my PC boots up in less than a minute now used to take 5 min +-. I have PS Elements 11, Picasa, Lightroom 5, Outlook and Gmail and a host of other programs, as far as perks I have found it to launch everything much faster. I have it installed on both my PC and laptop. The PC was windows 7 and the laptop was Windows 8.1. I won't go back.

I have had it for a little over a week, all of my photo programs seem to work a bit faster, only quirk is my SD reader occasionally becomes "Disabled" and I have to manually re-enable it. Much better than windows 8, which I never installed but have worked with some. 10 is more of a mashing of windows 7 and 8, still has the windows 8 menu structure, but also still useable from a standard PC mode instead of just feeling like you need a touchscreen.

I ordered a new computer with Windows 10 factory installed so thanks for your responses! Ernie, I thought that Picasa download was only available for Vista and Windows 7. Is there a special version for Windows 8-10?

I initially had problems with Windows 10 and Photoshop, but I then upgraded the driver for my video card and problems seem to have gone away.

Alicia. can you explain how you manually re enable a disabled SD card? I do not have windows 10 but have a new SD card and the 2nd time I used it I imported images using PS Elements and the camera then said it was damages. I have been thinking about returning it.

I have been using Win 10 since late April as I signed up for the technical preview. It has not been smooth sailing. Basic issues of booting and stability have improved, but not necessarily at a steady pace. Recently, changes to OneDrive have caused problem for a number of users. Please note that it is not simply a matter of not installing OneDrive. If you are using Win10, you are using OneDrive.

In the case of Pgotoshop, LightRoom and Bridge they must be run as administrator or you risk not being able to save your work: I believe this ties back to OneDrive security. You can set these, and any program, to run by default as admin, but you are prompted each time which is a bit annoying. I have a new build I will install this evening and I hope this annoyance is corrected.

Overall I like Win 10. It is very fast boot and I like the Start Menu. The Edge browser has some excellent features that many here will find helpful. Cortana has less use, in my opinion, than Siri.

Despite the bumps in the road, I am glad that I jumped in early.
YMMV

I had it installed on my pc for a day. I had no issue with photoshop, just make sure it has the latest update. There started being compatibility issues not associated wit PS the next day so I had to revert. Had no network connection the day after I installed it. My computer is 5 years old so that is probably the reason. Your getting a brand new computer that was built for W10 so you should have no problems. I may try again when an update for my mobo is available.

Thanks for post Jessica...I run 8.1 but reserved my copy the other day and I see it is now ready for upload or cancellation. I was tempted to cancel since why mess with what works. Maybe tonight I will install it....felling a little better about it now.

I installed Windows 10 on two computers running Windows 8.1 and one running Windows 7 with lots of really old apps like Dreamweaver 4 and Freehand 10. All work fine. However, there where some issues with Windows mail a week ago which now seem to be solved.

This may be a long shot but anyone use old MS office have any issues? Yes, I use MS office 2000. I haven't wanted to spend the $ to upgrade it so I Just keep using it lol. It's works on my windows 8.

I've been told that whatever works on Windows 7-8.1 will work in Windows 10

I use Office 2010 and haven't had any issues but I used to use the old MS Money and it worked on Win. 8.1 but not on 10 so it isn't necessarily true that if it worked on 7 or 8 it will work on 10. I looked it up and there is a registry hack to make it work but I didn't want to do that and figured it was time to switch to a newer accounting program anyway.

I have had no problems with older version of Office at all. I have PhotoShop and that too is working just fine.

I have Outlook but don't use it much and have not even tried it yet. I do use gmail and yahoo mail... zero issues with either one. I downloaded FireFox this morning and I have been using it all morning and no issues there either.

I use Chrome for my default browser and it is running just fine. I also us what was Internet Explore but they call it Microsoft Edge now. I don't like it but it is running just fine. I have not spent much time with it so not sure if I can get rid of some of the features that it loads automatically or not.

I am a eBay seller and their "listing program" can be very temperamental at times. But no issues at all there either.

I run feeds off several of my suppliers data bases and having no issues at all.

All systems 5 X 5 and ready to launch Huston!

MS Money versions 14,.15 and 17 are compatible.

MS Money Sunset (final version available after 17) won't work on Win. 10. You get an error message that you need to install IE 6. There are a couple of registry hacks and a replacement dll that you can do to make it work but I really didn't feel like attempting that. According to my research, it did work on the beta versions of Win. 10 but when the final version came out something had changed so that it no longer would work. If anyone needs to use MS Money on Win. 10 I suggest reading this thread in the MS forum.

No, what runs on Win 7 or Win 8.1 will not necessarily run on Win10. I have had several instances, beyond Win 8.1 apps, that had problems. Part of this is related to additional security and part is related to drivers. Build 10532 as an example would not run Chrome! This is supposed to be corrected in the next Build as some sort of oversight. (I am skeptical that this was a simple oversight.)

Tread carefully and back up your work before upgrading. Make certain you can down grade easily to your original OS before pushing ahead.

The facial recognition software that came bundle with the laptop would lockup under Win10, preventing login and rendering the computer useless. The solution was to retro grade to Win 8.1, uninstall the facial recognition soft and then upgrading, again to Win 10. Pretty much took a day of free time to make this fix. It should be noted, I never used the facial recognition software under Win 8.1, but Win 10 would call the program at boot and then lock up.

Just based on my experience with a Win 8.1 laptop purchased new in November 2014.

Where can you download version 11 these days?

It seems that my PSE download is only good for about 3 years! Is it better then to buy a CD?

Lutz Baar

Wait one month for Elements 14 to arrive. Yeah, CD is safer.

Another quick caution about Windows 10. I use PS's Raw Filter to assist me when I process scans of 4x5 negative and chromes. It is a great tool for color temp adjustments and perspective corrections. In Win10 the Raw Filter will not process these large scans of 12,000 pixels by 15,000 pixels. Same version of PS on Win7 or Win 8.1 works like a charm.

To add to the confusion, the Raw Filter on Win10 will process Raw images from my EOS M without a problem.

As my newest laptop is where I prefer to process images, I downgraded it to Win8.1 so I can get my workflow done. I will revisit Win10 in a few months.

I bought a new laptop with windows 10 today. Most people I've spoken with about it are mostly satisfied. It has to be better than my current windows 8. The laptop should arrive Friday 13th. Good thing I'm not superstitious.

Good luck, Jim!! Feedback re your experience will be welcome. I need to update, as well.

having always been an avid Windows user from the days of Win 95 , for the past 12 months i have been using a dual boot set up for Win 7 which i wasn't to keen on and Ubuntu (Linux)
as this topic is about Microsoft's newest OS, I took the courage to take advantage of the free upgrade to Win 10 (64bit version) on the basis i already had Win 7
what has my overall impression been so far of Win 10 well i like it !!!!!
all the programs like Gimp and Photoshop work well too

I think buying a new computer with Windows 10 on it is a better move than upgrading.

My old laptop was starting to struggle. I ignored the Windows machine with free upgrades and waited it out for Windows 10 installed.

Glad I did.

Have heard some troubling stories about people doing the 'free upgrade'; even paying for a technician to get it all working right.
