"political" Statement Photography Piece

Well I am not sure if it is political, but ethical perhaps.

I recently made this piece as a protest against societys conditioning - it is the first art I have ever done where I tried to make such a statement that cut so close to my core:

Art Prints

So this is a rather interesting piece on my part. Originally I felt bad that nearly all of my self portraits have me holding the camera to take them. I don't have anybody else to take pictures for me so I take them all myself. So I decided to do a facetious attempt at a camera advertisement, in this case the camera being fujifilm. I made myself like an abercrombie and fitch model, focusing away from the viewer to keep the camera as the focus.

As I have grown however I have come under fire for being too skinny by a beefier "bearish" community, and so I wished, for my own amusement, to see how I might look if I did indeed "beef up" somehow.. if it is even possible for my body type. I am a master at photo manipulation in photoshop and so I "morphed" myself to look bigger.

From a casual view it would appear like I took the same photo with the same pose progressively throughout my "bearification" process, but it's a deception - just like the commercial worlds deception of changing images to be what is considered mainstream attractive, or society changing us to be how they consider acceptable by shunning us if we are not. It reveals the process - the ugly truth people don't want you to see - the before and after - the aggrandization of perceived faults to idealized societal norms.

The first panel is unaltered - although ironically even it was touched up from the original - certain stray hairs removed - the background removed and placed on a white backdrop - just minor tweaks that many people do without thinking just to prep a shot. The second one is where the morphing begins, in the face, and some beefing up of the body. The third one I had shaved my upper lip so I brought some of the mustache hair back into prominence. The fourth one I beefed myself up even more in the body, increasing my arms and chest.

This artwork is thus in itself a mockery of that - a political and spiritual statement from and to myself that yes, I could be this, if that is what I wanted to be, but as it stands, I am happy being me, and thus while I may by any of those pics at any time, in the end, they are all still me, and in the end, ALL acceptable, IF I choose, but ONLY if "I" choose.

On a side note I look like I am some sort of bulky spanish/mexican wrestler in the last one, avenging his family or something haha.. fun.. it was a fun experiment to say the least, and maybe one day I'l look like that.. or want to look like that who knows.. but at the end of the day, and for now I am happy being "skinny" and I hope everyone else learns to like me for me too, and one day, if I wish to change, it will be because it was my personal decision based out of health, not because society told me to; and maybe eventually mainstream society will become less self loathing of what life creates them as and don't feel the need to change to fit some sort of mold.

What do you think?

That's really clever and I love the story behind it. Well done!

I think it's a brilliant idea and very unique. Great story too! All respect to you for making such a statement - I couldn't agree more.

Very interesting piece. Could be the start of a series on this theme.

buy a tripod. that solves many self portrait issues.

photoshop wise, it looks like your inhaling in the last shot. and your hand looks huge, i found that to be an annoying distortion when i tried that... i was too close to the camera. you might want to try oiling yourself, and getting some catch lights on the chest. so when you do distort, it looks more like your abs a larger, and your not having an alien bust out of your chest. plus it would add a bit more drama. just beware it will he hard to hold the camera.

hehe personally I kinda like the inhaling effect, and well.. I do have big hands regardless, I've been commented on them before in other pics hehe.. but in this case the focus was supposed to be on the camera itself - but all good suggestions!

And wow oiling myself up.. feels naughty hahaha..

eh what can I say.. I was freehanding it all so yeah the chest is probably a bit drastic - but it was fun!

yeah I should also get a camera that has a timer on it.. and the camera does have a tripod, but it's a tiny one.. and it's .. somewhere haha..

I have had a couple people offer to take professional shots of me.. maybe I should take them up on it..

and yeah thanks everyone - It felt good to have a back story as potent as this one - my self image has been something I have battled with for years - it's one reason I have so many shots and try to go au naturele as much is because I have been trying to accept what I see in the mirror - both physically and internally. Gotta love yourself first!

it feels naughty, but it should highlight any contours you have, and then they can be manipulated further.

or a remote shutter release, and set that to timer.

are you allergic to say... bees? that could help the bearification process... you may need to keep 911 on speed dial.

Yes yes true enough, more contrast can def. be worked with.

and no no, not bees.

my only real allergy is I have aquagenic urticaria, which makes me allergic to water.. but that just makes me get horrible hives and stuff all over my body and makes me allergic to my own sweat.. fun stuff haha :P

and eating large amts of food just doesn't do anything hahaha.. still this was all a fun experiment - I find the last pic makes me look intimidating and I'd never wanna be that.. so it's a fun way to see how one might look, without actually having to do all the work to get that way to realize "erm.. yeah.. not for me" hehehe..

i just didn't realize that the large look was an "in" thing. people in the US is more into the stick-bug-ification kind of thing. doing what they can to lose their profile.

It depends on the community, Mike.

"As I have grown however I have come under fire for being too skinny by a beefier "bearish" community"…

Shawn, I'm sorry people are being so hard on you. Know that in the community called artist, we're looking only at your work.

p.s. Which is wonderful, btw.

aw thanks :)

yes I came out into what is known as the "bear" community - where being strong, masculine, and beefy is seen as superior, and desired - kinda like the caveman mentality I suppose. Being of that persuasion I tended to also like people like that so it was hard to be part of a community that a) judged you because you didn't work out and beef yourself up like the rest of them did and b) had long hair - sometimes it seems only guys over 50 or 60 appreciate long hair, cuz it reminds them of the 60s and 70s hehe.. and a few that remember the big hair from the 80s.

It is one reason I tend to "resist" more than others because I have learned I need to stick to my guns with what I believe in, even if it gets me in trouble, and even if others do not agree with it. I am glad people here are just here for the art :)

Hmm. Well, now yo have the place to order the Halloween costume, and you can spend the night telling everyone how amused you aren't :D. Awesome!

that would require me not dressing up as captain morgan like I have for the past 5 years.. although my friend has been working off and on on a lotr elven costume for me.. that's where the circlet in my user pic comes from on my head :)
