If oil drops 10% on Monday then rises 11% on Tuesday does it cost more or cost less than when it started on Monday?
Post yours.

Oh I remember learning percentages and wanting to drop out of school...I think I was in the fourth grade.
I tried to figure this out..... Now my brain hurts..... My answer is "Now I need a Beer"
You have to memorize a cheat sheet if math isn't your friend. It works for me :D
Edit: I'm trying to look for it online. It's a little handy chart thingy. No luck. Sorry :(
8 Years Ago
It will cost less on Tuesday.
Jan's mom had 3 daughters.
The first was named April. The second was named May. What did she name her third daughter?
Val,
my granddaughter wanted to drop out of 4th grade over multiplication tables!!
Marlene I hope she didn't either :) I would guess June ....but that is too obvious to be right.
"Jan's". Sorry, Val. Each school has it's own vocabulary and we called them "possesive nouns" . I know there's another name for them but can't remember it.
Vanessa that is exactly what they are called... I was always good at missing the obvious.:)
Oh...the handy chart thing is called a calculator...lol I loved when I got one of them.

Val, this is just for you...who is buried in Grant's tomb?
Everyone else, shhh...let her answer.....

Oh good. Because I think the other term might have had something to do with latin mumbo jumbo and "gerund" was enough to stop me cold. I wouldn't feel too bad about that last one, though. It's a question that tests focus more than anything.
Edit. Sorry. A little late. Wohoo, Brian :)

I guess I don't always miss the obvious :0
ok here is one I saw someplace...hope it wasn't here.
In a street there are five houses, painted five different colors. - In each house lives a person of different nationality. - These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke different brand of cigar and keep a different pet. riddle is: Who owns the fish?
Necessary clues:
1. The British man lives in a red house. 2. The Swedish man keeps dogs as pets. 3. The Danish man drinks tea. 4. The Green house is next to, and on the left of the White house. 5. The owner of the Green house drinks coffee. 6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds. 7. The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill. 8. The man living in the center house drinks milk. 9. The Norwegian lives in the first house. 10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats. 11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill. 12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer. 13. The German smokes Prince. 14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house. 15. The Blends smoker lives next to the one who drinks water.
Y'all can play...got to get some sleep...that 5am alarm is getting kind of close.

Ok. I got the water drinking, Dunhill chain smoking Norwegian in the yellow house owning the fish so something went wrong somewhere. I think you have to have a good memory for this one—it's evil :D
8 Years Ago
Yay Bob...a totally visual solution. Maybe Einstein could do it in his head but not me :)
I learnd to solve this mathematically, but that was long long ago and I do not remember. So try and error gave me this solution:
the German owns the fish!
The complete list:
house no. 1 2 3 4 5
nationality Norwegian Danish British German Swedish
colour yellow blue red green white
beverage water tea milk coffee beer
smoke brand Dunhill Blends Pall Mall Prince Blue Master
pet cat horse bird fish dog
edit: sorry, multi blanks does not work here.
Here is something to think about:
Many of You have cats. Did You ever recognize how many tails they have?
No cat has two tails, right ?
One cat has one tail more than no cat. Right again ?
Do You have to look for Your cat now ?

A man comes into town on Friday. He stays five days and leaves on Friday.
How does he do that?
Does the man own a horse?
Re: the house riddle:
I looked it up. You draw a grid with house numbers running down one side and items, nationality, pet, drink, and smokes from there. Then you eliminate the extras starting with the two positional anchors, the Norwegian, and the Milk. And then you start estimating everything that something couldn't be from there.

If oil starts out costing $100 a barrel, it will cost $90 on Monday after the drop and $99.90 on Tuesday after the raise (probably answered already, but I didn't look because I wanted to play... also, I suck at math).
Are you a turtle?
Susan, is the turtle regarding "edit: sorry, multi blanks does not work here."?
Edit:And "on Friday" could be taken literally. So what the man sits on might be a tortoise :D

Nnnnnnnope. Turtles, are uhhh... turtles. And know if they're turtles. Or I might just be too old for you whippersnappers.

Friday was ridden, I thought he was a horse but perhaps not!
A man comes to a river with a boat. He has with him a wolf, a rabbit and a lettuce. The man can only carry one single passenger besides himself in the boat. How can he get them all to the other side without the rabbit eating the lettuce, or the wolf eating the rabbit?
@Barbara
bring the rabbit over... go get the wolf... Take the rabbit back over to the original side... then take the lettuce to the wolf... then go back and bring rabbit over again

Multiplication tables were scared into me by my fourth grade teacher. Seriously.
Fear is a great motivator, ... in some people. Others just freeze up. Does this mean that I am courageous by nature?
I would have answered JC's question with "less", because an 11% increase in a number that is 10% smaller ... is still smaller than the original number that shrank by 10%.
N - (10% x N) + 11% x [N -(10% x N)] < N
I have not proved it mathematically. I am just stating it mathematically.
Say N = 100 = original price
100 - (.10 x 100) = 90 = price after a 10% drop
90 + (.11 x 90) = 99 = dropped price after an 11% rise
99 < 100

How much wood could a wood chuck chuck,
if a wood chuck could chuck wood?
ANSWER:
... depends on how hungry the wood chuck is.
or
... can it have fries with that?
or
... is it on a body-fat reduction, high protein-low carb diet?
or
... the wood chuck is anorexic, so not very much, if any.
or
... the wood chuck is bulimic, so as much as it can hold before purging.

A man is shivering in the dark and needs to warm up. He only has one match.
He has a lantern, a candle, and some wood. Which does he light first?
There is a wall with three light switches. On the other side of the wall are three rooms which you cannot see into.
All switches are currently in the Off position. You have three minutes to move/toggle the light switches before you enter the rooms and you can only enter the rooms one time.
How can you determine which light switch goes to which room?
Robert, look above…the formula's posted already. But fear of math is often not the formula, but what happens to the numbers when using one.
Lutz, Robert mentioned fries.
wouldn't it just be easier to take the lettuce and the wolf over first and then go back for the rabbit...the wolf wants to eat the rabbit, not the lettuce....
more ... & what day of the week is of no importance . edit less what time it is matters :}
... but what happens to the numbers when using one
1 - 0.1 x 1 = 0.9
0.9 + 0.11 x 0.9 = 0.999
0.999 < 1
QED
Or more generally, for all numbers other than zero, where N = {1 ..... n},
N x 1 - 0.1 x N = 0.9N
0.9N + 0.11 x 0.9N = 0.999N
0.999N < 1N
QED for all N from 1 to n
So you might ask, "What happens when the number is 0?" ANSWER: Are you insane ! - the price of oil will NEVER be $0 !

Robert,
It looks like you worked on your formula a bit and it reads a little better than before but I don't think you can assume a greater or less than relationship in your equation since the fact that one is less than the other hadn't been resolved (the point of the brain teaser). My math is horribly rusty, but this seems like a quadratic equation sort of a problem if you wanted to express it in pure mathematics. But it's just as easy to fill in data to find a solution like you had above.
If you want to write equations, "N" instead of "1 x N" since 1 instance of N is N. Therefore, you would have 2N, not 2 x N, etc. If you weren't worried about eliminating the "/100" part of the percentage, you could even write .1n or .2n instead, but not 10% and 20%..
But again, I have to reemphasize that the formulas aren't usually the issue with many people who fear math. They could suffer from some form of dyscalculia rather than lack understanding of what's going on in a word problem . You're right, memorizing tables are a great shortcut to circumvent some of these issues, multiplication tables being only one such set.
Susan,
I'm not sure about age, but my tortoise reference was a nod to the race with the hare as well as an unlikely substitute for a horse. You're an artist, ergo eternally youthful— so no "old" talk :)

I wish I were a Turtle…I totally missed how "are you a turtle" was another teaser from the Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles. Huh. Very cool.
p.s. And a subtle way of pinging. Ultra cool.
