Ot: An End To Obesity Mit, The Broad Inst., And Harvard

http://news.mit.edu/2015/pathway-controls-metabolism-underlying-obesity-0819

My BIL makes a comment at the very end of this article. He is with Harvard and The Broad Institute.

This will probably save countless lives. Improve life for countless people.

I'm always weary of New Science that makes extraordinary claims, it reminds me of the drug commercials on T.V, first they release and market the magic drug like the cure all for what ever condition, about six months later it's the lawyers turn to tell you how if you took the drug and died or received severe side effects like kidney failure, heart failure, liver failure just call the number on the screen, seems like a common pattern every time a new magic million/billion dollar drug is rolled out into the market place. I quit taking all my blood pressure and cholesterol meds and feel great since i did. All I take now is an aspirin a day, and keep the doctors away.

I think the best way to control obesity is watch what you put in your mouth. I see lines and lines of cars everyday with people waiting to eat drive thru Mcdonalds food.

Mario,

Did you read the article?

The research and therapeutics are clean cut.

I did. The docotor also told me the meds I was taking were safe, until I took it upon myself to read to fine print.

Mario,

In your case there is no winning.

Find your own cure.

Physics tells us that that ingesting fewer calories than we burn will cause us to lose weight, regardless of our metabolic rate. The reverse is true for gaining weight. This study only looks at metabolic rates and does not address behavioral factors. Any treatment resultant from this would be welcome, but will not change the underlying cause of obesity - eating more than we burn.

Vanessa Bates

Robert, in the case of someone suffering from hyperthyroidism, what you suggest would affect muscle mass (including the heart) and otherwise throw the body in starvation mode —all without very much of the desired effect of weight loss. One of the reasons why an MD is required is because the body is a very complex organism. For further reading, you might want to look up why cardiovascular workouts are affected by heart or lung problems. The key is in the Latin :)

David Bridburg

Robert,

to be obese is to increase your caloric intake over 20 years by1%. That is how well your body and brain regulate
your system. With the pressures on what you are discussing food control and exercise many borderline obese folks
end up yo yoing and being actually much heavier, along with doing a lot of physical damage to themselves as Vanessa
is discussing.

If you read the article carefully there is not a brain to stomach causality for obesity. There is a specific DNA causality. And it works
in reverse as discussed in the article when treated as such.

Further looking at Mario's often correct concerns about side effects and black magic, the gene therapeutics are actually without
side effects because the methods are highly targeted unlike all previous medical treatments.

until i see proof of it, its just a paper. there are lots and lots of papers claiming all sorts of things. its how they get funded. but unless they start proving it, and its safe, its just another paper.

Mike,

I have had the good fortune of discussing obesity and diabetes for two decades with a foremost expert in the field.
His comments, end of the article, after decades of research coming out of Harvard, Beth Israel Deaconess and in this case MIT, he
is with The Broad Institute that works across Harvard and MIT.....well I will take his extremely well educated, MD and Ph.D,
opinions more seriously than your concerns. He has actually read many papers and studied the results.

i don't care if a doctor said it.

every week:

coffee is good for you
chocolate is bad

coffee is not good for you
chocolate is now good for you
white wine is bad, now its good, but only mixed with red which was bad and so on

they are all doctors. they have to write these things in order to keep getting funded. doesn't matter if it makes sense or not. or the claims are out there. don't assume just because they have a degree in something that they know what they are talking about.

my concerns don't matter because i don't follow papers like this. i need to see actual proof.

Mike,

The only thing I see in your writings is that you do not know what we are discussing.

None of this is a study of whether you can eat more chocolate.

I might add I have to ask my BIL whether his funding will be cut off. This piece of work
will have major effects on future obesity research funding.

Have I ever mentioned I have a PHD?

Even the article says it's looking at genetic causes of obesity. Most obesity is caused by a sedentary lifestyle in combination with excessive caloric intake, not genetics. My genetics may make it harder than me to lose weight than it is for some, but every time I eat a lot less I lose weight, even in my middle age. Unfortunately I don't do that often enough. I'm with Mike, the so called "experts" are constantly changing their mind about what's good or bad and/or are contradicting each other. So you're supposed to listen to the doctor, okay, which one?

Vanessa Bates

No, Greg. In which field?

David, good point, especially regarding Doctors. But I worry whenever someone suggests a starvation diet (especially when exorcise isn't the first option). Rare as it may be, there are physiological reasons some people are obese and it's always good to consult someone who is knowledgeable in the field of weight loss before embarking on a regimen that would affect the body.

i can ask my uncle, he's a doctor. so we can assume he is ok to ask... except he's a doctor in religion (Whatever that is), so it may not be relevant.

i'm mentioning other studies. every week a new one comes out and each one says the opposite of the last one. there will be dna issues with being overweight, but until they find the cause and the trigger (probably something in our environment), this is just another way to fund more drugs that causes other problems.

keep in mind, it doesn't matter if your a doctor or not. having one doesn't make them any smarter than anyone else. they memorized what they needed to. many of them are wrong. if i had an illness, i would get advice from a doctor. however i would get more usable advice from people around the world who have the issue. dr - doesn't mean a lot to me. and these papers, there are lots of them.

DK,

every time you embarked on a diet and exercise the whiplash later on was gaining more weight.

I should know.

Obesity can be measured, 20 years of overeating by 1% will make you obese. Most of your overeating came
right after each temporary diet.

All of the actions to reduce calories and over exercise have effects on the body. Not good.

The cause is clearly a genetic problem. The researchers have pinpointed that this time.

Mike????? There are no other papers on IRX3 and IRX5.

Please Google and get back to us with the other papers.

This has nothing to do with your chocolate habits.

David, I think he's talking about studies in general. Remember all the studies saying butter was bad? Now it's margarine. I tend to wait to see what shakes out first about a lot of things for the same reason. The article is a very interesting find, though.

David Bridburg

Vanessa,

I know what you mean. I get all of what Mike and DK are saying.

I have heard as the son of a medical man that all of those research reports are disproven within five years.

I have heard that since the late 1960s. And now the public at large finally sees that for what it is, the reports will
be overturned.

Ironically now that the public has caught up a bit, the researchers are doing very different work. The work is detailed
study of DNA and cell materials and structures. Totally different than what the public is equipped to respond to.

The skepticism is misplaced. The world has moved on to different forms of research.

Yes on the radio announcers will still have some fun with the public.Chocolate will solve cancer for a week only. Coffee
will stop altimers etc......and the following weeks all bets will be off.

Thing is the radio announcers will not be reporting DNA findings or therapeutics.

Dave

there won't be papers because this just came out. nor do i care to look, but i'm willing to bet there are probably dozens of papers linking something to being overweight and they have the cure. everyone has their own ideas. and as i said i will only believe it when i see it.

even the stuff they say is perfectly safe turns out to be very dangerous.

i remember a paper about RNA therapy, modifying your DNA to control allergies, i don't think that one ever got off the ground, i have no plans on my dna being messed with. most of these are papers, let them put it into action.

its not that skepticism is misplaced, dna is the new buzz word. its something people understand what it is and what it does, yet its too complicated to understand for most people. yet when they hear it, it sounds scientific. much like saying - nuclear medicine. i don't think anyone uses that term any more. each generation has its new buzz word.

radio's won't announce dna things because dna is really boring. chocolate and coffee is exciting. and people understand those things. the only time dna will be brought up is if you can eat unlimited amounts of chocolate and only gain wisdom and a pretty body.
