Birds Of Prey In My Back Yard.

I step outside the other day first thing in the morning and I see this beautiful hawk flying around my back yard. I had my camera with me, because I have made a new habit of taking it with me when I leave the house. It stayed around long enough to allow me this shot. Feeling very fortunate to live in a place where this is a common occurrence.

great capture, Mario!
We get owls regularly as well as hawks..my Honey loves to sit in the backyard and stare them down....I've experienced one fly right into a sliding door, trying to attack the family dog, so nope, i stay inside!!

Thank you Marlene and Phyllis, I heard this ruckus on my porch not long ago, sounded like a bar fight, when I open the door a huge owl had knocked over a chair, he was still there looking right at me with these big beautiful eyes, it was at night time and he's still around but I don't know how I'm gonna get his photo.

Shortly after I moved into my house (which Is as about as "In the woods" as you can get in the Metro Boston area) I was talking to my brother in the backyard and I saw one swoop in over the roof of the house and snatch a goldfinch from my bird feeder. I did not have my camera and all I could say was "Oh Oh Oh".... amazing animals to watch

Hawks are making themselves present all throughout New Orleans, LA Photos of them have been taken of them swooping down and attacking pigeons. Beautiful image Mario!!!! There have been a pair of brown eagles and many osprey also.

Once I had the great experience a huge brown hawk swooped down and as I was traveling off a circular ramp on the inner-state here in the city the hawk flew along the car it was so surreal like National Geographic In slow motion, If anyone was in the passenger seat of my Jeep at the time they could have just reach out and touched it.....that was cool to experience

Cool Image. My coolest hawk experience was one day while at one of my usual birding haunts, I was in my little territory where I typically stalk my birds deciding where to shoot from, when a large red-shouldered hawk landed on a branch about 5 feet in front of me. I had my camera, could have easily gotten the picture, but I was so amazed I just stood there looking at it. By the time the thought process of why I was there kicked back in and I started to raise my camera, he flew away and out of reach.

I would love to catch one in flight! I've seen them with prey grasped in their talons flying away. This shot I took on the side of the road, it was a flock of these beautiful black buzzards, they were feeding on the carcass of what looked like a calf, I took some photographs of the flock but this is the only one I processed. These are just chance encounters, like I said I take my camera with me now everyday.

Nice image, Mario. Living where we do, which is semi-rural, with lots of farm land close-by, we always see Turkey Vultures gliding on the air currents and circling high above the fields and nearby woods. I'm sure it's a prime area for them. Occasionally will see a hawk, but it's random at best.

Looks to be a "red shouldered hawk" and a "black vulture". Strange that we speak of a Buzzard which is a vulture - and a buzzard is a kind of Hawk - you see them listed in bird guides as "Buteos"

Thank you all! Roy your correct, the buzzard refers more to a hawk looking bird, the vulture is sometimes called the black vulture and they have some called turkey vulture, but I did not know of the name Buteos, thanks for the clarification.

Around my neck of the woors we have the Black or turkey vultures. I have a few shots of them somewhere in my "Archive". I have been trying to get some good shots of the Missisipi Kites that I have been spotting near my home recently. One day I had been out shooting my hummingbirds, and the light had faded and I was going in, and when I got out of my shooting blind (Actually it is a lawn chair with a side table that I keep semi hidden behind privacy fencing) and turned to go in there were probably 10 of the kites flying around in the area that my back had been to while shooting.......

Nice work on the hawk. I have them in my yard frequently. They nest nearby. I have my 400mm by my desk and if one lands I grab it. I never got of a decent shot of one in my own yard in my 5 years here.

Thanks Bradford, I live on a couple acres, when I saw him I got in my truck and drove along the fence line to the back of the yard and with my camera leaning on the window I zoomed in on him. I find myself driving around now looking up at tall towers and power lines knowing these birds seek out the tallest vantage points. The built in 1265mm zoom lens surly gives me an advantage.
