2015 Worldwide Photowalk

Anyone ever participated in the Worldwide Photo Walk? I've done two, 2010, 2011, in Louisville. A relaxing way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning, hopefully get some nice shots, and socialize with other photographers. Experience level is open to all, from novice to pro, and there's no entry fee. Anyway, checkout the link below, and if interested click on the Find A Walk button, go to your area, and sign up.

"Walks" (groups) are limited to the first 50 to sign up in any given area, so you better get hot if wanting to do so.

Worldwide date: Saturday, October 3, 2015

Lots more details in the video at the link: http://kelbyone.com/photowalk/

Are you doing one this year Greg? I heard about these from years back. I think it would be interesting to do. (I can not do to my injuries tho)

SMP, you're welcome. :)

Andee, I haven't decided yet. The closest one to is about 90 miles, and there are two others, which are East of me across the state, and almost 3 hours away. The logistics of getting up early enough to make the drive and check in in time (normally 9am as I recall), makes it difficult. last two times I stayed at my brother-in-laws place, but he has moved out of town.

On a side note, and strictly voluntary, one can enter an image to the contest they host, and possibly receive get some sort of prize. I haven't completely read the entire instructions for this year, so not sure what they are doing. My very first Walk back in 2010, I entered an image to the Group leader for our Walk, and it was selected as the winner (I was surprised and pleased). Then the group winners are submitted by the group leader to the national level. As a prize I was provided a Free copy of the Scott Photoshop CS5 book, which I still use as a reference.

This was my winning shot (shameless plug :) ):

The PhotoWalk doesn't seem to be very popular with this crowd. :)

Andee Design

I think it is more popular with the photography forum crowds where the bulk are photographers mainly.

I would love to and I found 3 in the middle of my state. Unfortunately
1) that's 2 hours away
2) arthritis, a heel spur, and sciatica are making walking hell, which is very sad because I used to walk miles at a time without a problem
3) would need a MUCH better camera to make it worthwhile.

I will definitely be watching out for the walk next year, though, when I hope to have upgraded my equipment and maybe gotten the pain under control as well. If not the latter, I'll rent a scooter. Not going to miss out a second time. It sounds like a great opportunity.

I was intrigued enough to look up the one nearest me. Just 30 minutes away--in the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World. First time I have ever wished I was an annual passholder.

Greg, thanks for posting the information. This sounds like a great opportunity to network with other photographers. In case no one is aware National Geographic also sponsores a meet and shoot and held their event this Sunday in New Orleans. If you are a member of National Geographic they eventually will make it to your town and email you the information to participate. The event is limited and by invitation only, yourself and other members may have heard of the event

Greg, it wouldn't be my type of thing, I mean crowds are not for me. This comes from my law enforcement days. I remember having duty at the Miami Orange bowl for sporting events and concerts and I would always opt for working outside ,roving the parking lot outside the stadium if I could. But I love the photo you posted. Enjoy your walk though!

Thank you Greg for that information and link. I am thinking about joining one not too far from me, in Ontario Canada. And I posted the event on the FB page for a photography group I am with. And at this point I guess I will either join one in the area but maybe the group might decide to start one.

Greg Jackson

Mario, due to the distance from me, I probably won't be doing the walk again this year. The two I've participated in, the group leaders didn't make everyone stick together, and you could go off on your own, and at the designated time everyone would meet back at a pre-selected place to eat, shoot the breeze, etc., and that wasn't mandatory either.

Valerie, that's interesting they're having one in Disney, especially considering the cost of a ticket to get in there. The last couple of times we've gone there on vacation, I didn't even take my camera into the park. Far too many people to try and get any decent shots and not have any tourists in the scene. Plus, everything there, buildings, etc, are probably trademark protected. Just my personal view though, and not intended to deter anyone from participating in the Disney excursion.

Thanks to all who have replied. :)

Valerie Reeves

I thought the same things, Greg. At a hundred bucks a pop that's gonna be one pricey day. And the whole trademark thing, too. Odd. Wish someone with annual passes would do it and report back. lol

I posted this topic 22 days ago (seems like less), but wanted to bump it back up again. I've signed-up for a Walk closer to home, eliminating traveling 1.5 or 3 hours one way to get there.

Checkout your areas if interested using the link I posted, as there's probably still some openings available (50 per Walk). A couple of hours out shooting on a Saturday morning, and it's free. :)

I have participated in the walks every year since it began. They are a lot of fun. Especially if most of the group stays together, the socializing and making new friends is great. Usually there a 2 or 3 walks here in the Cleveland area. Seems like every year we stumble upon some great (unexpected) photo opportunities. Several of the pictures I have taken on the walks have sold well here on FAA.

I've done two, 2010 and 2011, both in Louisville, Kentucky, and I'm looking forward to this one. It's a new location for me, plus it's only 45 minutes from here, as Louisville is almost 3 hours away.

I've taken part in the walks every year since the first one in 2008 also. The best one so far was in Downtown LA in 2011. We ended up going over the 2 hour suggested time limit. We started out in the LA Arts district and the walk leader had some of her model friends show up so we could shoot them. Then we went through Little Tokyo and spent some time at the Occupy LA rally in front of City Hall. We ended up shooting from an overpass downtown where they were doing 2nd unit filming for Batman: The Dark Night. It was a great afternoon.

Andee, I have 3 in my Watched thread folder now. It does make it convenient.

Duane, seeing the Dark Knight stuff would have been very cool opportunity.

Kathy, you'll enjoy it if you participate. The two I've attended were low-stress and I got to shoot some big-city urban stuff not available here.

Looking at the Photo Walk website a moment ago, and there are currently 647 Walks scheduled (319 of those in the US), with 8,743 total Walkers signed up to participate. That's a lot of shutters clicking on the same day. :)

Kathy,

Looking at the Walk description, looks like an interesting morning. Enjoy your Walk. :)

"...exploring the alleys and connecting streets as we search for interesting and gritty urban details; store fronts and window displays, crumbling walls, graffiti, interesting people, etc, in other words all of the elements that make an urban area recognizable as urban..."

I should probably add that if you signup, you do not have to go alone. The two previous walks I attended, there were participants who also had their wife/husband/friend with them. This year I'll be taking my 8 year old grandson with me. All of the groups, if they're filled to capacity, have 50 participants, but you don't usually walk in that large crowd. Most allow you to go off on your own or in much smaller groups or couples, shoot within the prescribed area, and meet back two hours later at a predetermined spot, normally a restaurant, coffee shop, or wherever the group leader has in advance. If you had to stick with an entire gaggle of 50 people, I wouldn't be doing it. I'm not a crowd person.

Latest info gleaned from their homepage a moment ago, shows the numbers have increased significantly: (Worldwide totals)

Just an update concerning the worldwide numbers for the Walk on Saturday, October 3rd: :)

Photo Walks: 959

Photo Walkers: 15,242

Still time to participate by finding one possibly located near you. Checkout the link above.

If you are in Central Coast of California area, there are two of them very close together. One in Morro Bay and one in Pismo Beach. Both of the are going to offer some really great photo ops. Both areas are full of possibility.

Even if you live in San Francisco or Los Angeles and what to expand out of the cities for new stuff, you are only a 2-3 hours away.

Both of them talk about stairs, but don't worry about the stairs and the climbs. You can go on this shoot and not have to even do those stairs or the climbs to participate.

These two shoots are so close together that it is too bad that one was not a morning shoot and the other an evening shoot.

If you are coming from San Francisco, you could actually stop and shoot in Morro Bay, have a great lunch at the Hofbrau http://www.hofbraumorrobay.com/ and still have plenty of time to get to the Pismo Beach. The Morro Bay walk is shooing the Morro Bay Harbor Festival. Lot of action all day long.

If you are coming form Los Angeles, you can stop at Pismo Beach and take the same walk on your own in the morning, have lunch at the world famous F. McLintocks http://www.mclintocks.com/ and make the short drive, about 35 miles, to Morro Bay.

Any one that wants to try to do either one of the walks on their own in the morning and then make the walk with the group, all you would have to do is go to the meeting point of walk you are doing on your own and it will be perfectly clear why you are there and use your own imagination on what and where you want to go from there.

Have fun!

Floyd,

It looks like those two Walks overlap a bit with their set times:

Morro Bay: 5:45pm - 8:15pm
Pismo Beach: 5pm - 7:45pm

Current openings (as of this posting) available to register as a participant in those two Walks:
Morro Bay: 30
Pismo Beach: 32

Floyd Snyder

Ya, I noticed that too. That is why I am suggesting that if some one was coming for north or south they could do one of them on their own. I live about 20 miles for the Pismo Beach site and 50 from Morro Bay. I know the area very well. Either walk can be done by themselves. Of course it would be much better to be done with the guide and the group but the areas are both very accessible and easy to walk if you unless you climb the stairs. But you really do not have to climb the stars.

I think they are only meeting at those stairs because there are a few views of the rock from that area and there is parking up there. But you can easily shoot from that vantage point and then drive a couple of blocks and park down below. Parking is a problem down below and with that being festival weekend it will be difficult to find a parking place.

There will be all kinds of boats in the harbor that weekend and a huge art show. In fact if for people that do outside shows, that used to be a killer show. The also do one on Memorial Day and maybe 4th of July. They used to be fantastic!

I participated in one a few years back. We had some exclusive access to an abandoned fort turned state park. It was a very good time. I also ended up having the winning photo submission in my group.

Unfortunately, over the past couple years there haven't been any close enough to my home for me to participate. Well, there have been a couple about a little more than and hours drive away....but I'm a Rhode Islander and an hours drive may as well be a days drive!

I like that image, Andrew. Did my first sea duty tour ('72-'73) at Newport. Summer was great, but the winter was brutal.

Okay, the 8th annual Worldwide Photo Walk has come and gone this past Saturday (Oct. 3rd). There were 1,000 scheduled locations for Walks, and 21,548 people registered to participate in the various locations. If anyone has some time to kill, and they're registered a Flickr member, there are currently 4.5k images submitted to the group pool. They're not necessarily what members might have submitted to the contest (optional to do so), but it provides a glimpse into what quite a few people were photographing for two hours on the 3rd of October 2015. :)

Enjoy: (you don't need to join the group to view the images)
https://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw2015

I thought about, and got the okay from Abbie, to start a thread dedicated to images that any members here who participated in a Walk might want to post (a 3 max limit was ok'd), but have decided not to do so.
