For those of you who sell your images through Pixels.com, you can now sell t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, and other apparel items.
This is the biggest product expansion in the history of our business and represents a huge opportunity for all of our sellers to reach a new audience of buyers for your artwork.
You can read the official announcement here:
Pixels.com Launches T-Shirts
If you decide to offer your images for sale on t-shirts, the t-shirts will be available to purchase at the following locations:
1. Pixels.com
2. your Artist Website
3. your shopping cart widgets
4. your Facebook shopping cart
T-shirts will not be offered for sale on FineArtAmerica.com or any of our other "fine art" domains (e.g. FineArtEngland.com, FineArtEurope.com, etc.)
To learn more about our various domains and the direction that we're heading with all of them, click here:
Pixels.com, Fineartamerica.com, New Products, And Website Differentiation
Please note: selling t-shirts is much different than selling prints and other products for one primary reason... in order to be successful selling t-shirts, your need to upload images that are specifically designed for t-shirts. Read this entire article, and you'll see why:
Pixels.com Launches T-Shirts
How often do you see someone walking around with a t-shirt that has a rectangular image on it? Almost never. Here is an example of a t-shirt with a rectangular image on it:
http://pixels.com/products/chevy-biscayne-debra-and-dave-vanderlaan-adult-tshirt.html
Most of the t-shirts that you see people wearing have images on them that are specifically designed for t-shirts. Here is an example:
http://pixels.com/products/porsche-911-st-1970-mark-rogan-adult-tshirt.html
As a result, selling t-shirts isn't for everyone. Lots of FAA members are going to try to activate their existing, rectangular JPG images as t-shrits... and that will work, but the odds of you selling those t-shirts are very small.
You need to think about creating new designs that are specifically for t-shirts.
Here's an example of an artist who is doing that correctly:
http://pixels.com/art/all/all/tshirts/all/nicklas+gustafsson
He's got solid JPEG images for his prints...
http://pixels.com/products/ronin-nicklas-gustafsson-framed-print.html
... and he's got transparent PNG files for his t-shirts:
http://pixels.com/products/ronin-nicklas-gustafsson-adult-tshirt.html
Also - even though you can set different prices for different sizes (e.g. S, M, L, XL, XXL)... don't do that. Think about when you go shopping for a t-shirt in a store. All of the sizes are the exact same price.
I'm sure there will be lots of questions. Go ahead and post them here.

I have made some masks for my art files and made them into PNGS with transparent backgrounds - however this makes the file size much larger -- larger than the limit of 25mb here at FAA. Will you be increasing the file size limit to accommodate the fact that the PNG file format seems to be a much larger size file? Because I would love to put some of my art on shirts in an attractive way (rather than the rectangle image, because as you stated, those will not sell well).
Pretty cool, thanks. Would also like the option to put images on the back at some point.

Since t-shirts are fairly small, your t-shirt PNG files can be small, as well. There is no need to go larger than 3,000 pixels x 3,000 pixels, for example.
If you create a transparent PNG file at that size or smaller, it should definitely come in under the 25 MB size limit.

While I agree in theory that rectangles on a shirt don't sell well, it depends on the rectangle. As a rule, shirts aren't my thing, but this one has sold well for me and I would love to have it do well here, but right now, it displays slightly off center.
http://tisdaleart.com/products/london-calling-classic-british-phone-booth-mark-e-tisdale-adult-tshirt.html
It's more apparent that it's not centered on the shirt itself because it's a rectangle but it's centered in the upload box. You can even tell when you click to adjust the image that the green box that forms around it is not on the center of the shirt.

Once again you have helped me prove the belief: Be patient and you will eventually get what you want.
Thanks a million!

I have a few of the shirts with my own artwork (including my trademarked slogan) and they are GREAT!!! Multiple exclamation points great. I am now closing my other t-shirt shops and will sell here exclusively. One small suggestion- I have been testing these with my buyers and most request a size chart for the ladies tops.

the images are going slightly too high and to the left.. Also, if I go into Bulk edit, I'm not getting an option on my images for sweatshirts, tank tops, etc. Only seeing Tshirts...

Behind the scenes it shows a base price of $20 for t's I added a mark up of $6.50 but the price displaying is $25.00. I want to sell my shirts for $26.50, am I missing something, is there a glitch?

Linda,
If you look above the size dropdown on one of your t-shirt pages, you'll see a link that says "Size Chart". Click there, and you'll see the size chart for whatever product you're currently looking at.

We've re-centered the images a little bit. For your existing images that are already for sale as t-shirts, you'll have to wait 24 hours to see the changes. If you upload a new image, you'll see the changes right away.

Sean, thanks for the idea about reducing the PNG image size - it worked well!

Next question - I don't see sweatshirts in the list of clothing on the page. Are they going to be added soon? Thanks again!

I love the images on t shirts w/o the background, I have created some images without the backgrounds and saved as png,,but suspect there is a easier way,,,,I am foggy on the best way to achieve it, Wish someone would post a tutorial "how to" ..I think you use the magic wand,,,delete the background and save as png,,,I think there is a part where you invert the image, As i said,,,Im a little, fuzzy on the steps,

Cool - I re-placed the file (same file - just loaded it again) for the one I linked to above and the new thumb is much better! Yay! I'll wait for the others to adjust themselves rather than re-loading them!
Thanks Sean!

I like that the upload for t's gets added on my duvet covers because now I can offer them for sale, thank you!

hoodies aren't listed in the search drop down - i can't find them in the list, they should be called hoodies as an extra word though.

OK another member helped me figure out the price difference is for different styles. Funny that the default price doesn't match the default style, that's what threw me off.

i found the tank top on my page, but it should listed right under t shirts, its hard to see. but i don't see the sweatshirts... i'd like to be able to not only show them apart from just being clothing, which isn't that eye catching. but to put my own prices in for those.

This may not be news to anyone here, but I've found Fireworks to be the best program for creating or editing png files.

Thanks, Kathleen. When/if I get my computer back, I got a lot of work to do! That might be a good place to start!

I am in the process of adjusting all my images to best fit the products, and halfway through working this morning Tee Shirts showed up! I don't plan to offer them at present, but I still think the expansion is great!

These are only on pixels so make sure you are there, and the images have been up over 24 hours

FAO Sean:
Since I'm in the UK, my currency is set to GBP. Using the Shop tab and choosing T-shirts from the Products drop-down, the prices are all displayed to 4 decimal places. Doesn't look very professional, I'm afraid... Did you forget to set the currency format here?

Hello Abbie, I'm actually on pixels ...
Anyway, I'm using an image that was uploaded sometimes ago on FAA but appearing correctly on pixels.com,
so do we have to upload new images directly by pixels for it can works ?
If the sponsoring links works for U, could you tell me the process you've been following ?
I don't sponsor links...I advertise offsite.
But have they been priced as tshirts for over 24 hours

There is a glitch with MANY t-shirt images. When clicking on the t shirt it doesn't come up. When shopping for shirts the print comes up.

Jessica - those are showing up as $0 in your shop. I saw others like it when I scrolled through your available shirts.
Do you have prices set for them? For all sizes? Shouldn't be necessary but I wonder if you skipped the smallest size if it would show up as $0 like that? Weird!
I don't see this issue in my shop but I have maybe a dozen shirts available at the moment.
Silly question, Jessica, but have you changed your t-shirt prices recently? The thumbnail for your pink peony shirt shows the price as 0, which would explain why it doesn't come up when you click on it. I was getting the same problem as you when I was in the middle of removing some prices at the weekend, but it sorted itself out after I waited for the system to update.
Edit: Oops - I see from your other thread that you've solved the problem!

Thanks Mark and Jane! Yes I guess I forgot to price that particular gallery! Problem solved!

I'm wishing that t-shirts are a better looking black and not the washed out one that I get on my screen. One of my images look really good on black and the pillow and other item's black is perfect and pitch black, but the t-shirt black is really gross and detract from the artistic image that goes on it. I share my artworks on social media and don't feel happy or confident about sharing pixel black t-shirts with my designs. Can this be fixed please?
Also would like to see ladies shirts with a slightly lower cut or more glamerous style neck line. I don't mean a really low or provocative one.....just a nice slim line lower cut that most of us gals like to wear in summer here.

Sorry if this question has already been asked... I'm trying to make some of my images more t-shirt friendly, such as the landscape images, by cropping them into an oval and making the rest of the background transparent. When I do this (using GIMP) it seems to make the file size huge, WAY over the 25mb limit. (I'm exporting it to an PNG).
I've previously made transparent backgrounds on some floral images that didn't require me to add the oval, and those file sizes were fine. It only seems to increase the size drastically when I crop into an oval. Any suggestions??
It's very difficult to get them down below 25 MB. Sean says to make a 3000 x 3000 px version for the shirts instead of going larger. Personally, I wish he'd up the limit so this wouldn't be so difficult. I would like to make oval versions for shower curtains too so that the background color could be changed by the buyer but I don't think 3000 x 3000 px would be large enough for those. Anyway, I've only done one of my pastels so far as the smaller oval PNG for a shirt. Most of my shirts are graphics. Even some of those are difficult to reduce because I like to add noise to reduce gradient banding and that adds to the size. Good luck!
You shouldn't have such huge file sizes at just 3000px. What is the ppi set to? Some people say ppi doesn't matter, only the total height and width. Another PoD product site suggests 150ppi for apparel.

@Brian.....I tried to download Gimp the other week and I ended up getting a whole lot of malware and nasty junk on my laptop as a result. Did you have this experience and if you didn't then I wonder what I did wrong? I use Picmonkey for my artwork for T-shirt designs, but thought that Gimp might be easier for this.
Can you please tell us the dimensions of the printing area on the T-shirts ? If we create an image specially for t-shirt what is the recommended aspect ratio ?
Leanne, I've installed GIMP on 3 computers so far and I've had no issues with Malware whatsoever.

So in order to do this correctly going forward... I need to upload one image for everything else, and one just for shirts to avoid the square issue? How would they link together? When a personal browses my images? One another website, they due it by uploading the main print and then have a section for add-on products to upload another file. All gets displayed as "also available as...
"
Scott no you don't have to do it but if you want to, edit the image. Scroll down to shirts and CUSTOMISE. Upload your special image there and then submit as normal.
One thing I do like here as opposed to another site I use.... The default t-shirt color closely matches the color in the image, so the square image kinda blends in and does not look that bad. The other website I use displays the default shirt randomly, and I had to go in and turn off some colors because they looked hideous.
As one oerson said, I wish they would change the listing from sweatshirt to hoodie. All other sites use hoodie to show it has a hood. Some sites offer regular sweatshirts and hoodies.
I can't wait until pixels starts offering laptop sleeves, mugs, clocks, rugs, beach towels, and other products. Keeping up with 3 websites takes a lot of time away from creating new images.
Thanks Abbie. Now to go through my 500 images and see which ones I need to change (it's time to consider removing some of my older images anyway). My landscapes would have to stay the same as to not take away from the image. One personal mentioned doing a fade away on the edges. I might experiment with that Or something else going forward.

I have just started trying to edit photos and upload in PNG format. However, it still shows the corners. http://pixels.com/featured/1-iguana-portrait-carl-moore.html As I look through other t-shirts, the corners are not showing.
@Brian....thanks for your feedback.....might give it another go one day with Gimp, when I'm feeling brave enough and have the time.
I read different things, but I need a clarification.... Does this site work like the others where white in a jpg will become transparent? If you want your whites to print on your shirts, you need to upload a png? However, for throw pillows and shower curtains (which are also fabric); it doesn't matter.... All colors will print regardless of whether you upload a jpg or png.
Trying to figure out why shirts are so different as opposed to other fabrics and prints.
